Drawing from two ethnographies in the Netherlands and Canada, this paper interrogates how gang members experience their affiliates’ murder in different street milieus. We describe how gang members in both studies made sense of and navigated their affiliates’ murder(s) by conducting pseudo- homicide investigations, being hypervigilant, and attributing blameworthiness to the victim. We then demonstrate that while the Netherland’s milder street culture amplifies the significance of homicide, signals the authenticity of gang life, and reaffirms or tests group commitment, frequent and normalized gun violence in Canada has desensitized gang-involved men to murder, created a communal and perpetual state of insecurity, and eroded group cohesion. Lastly, we compare the ‘realness’ of gang homicide in The Hague with the ‘reality’ of lethal violence in Toronto, drawing Citation: Urbanik, Marta-Marika, attention to the importance of the ‘local’ in making sense of murder and contrasting participants’ and Robert A. BWW Reviews : James Brown - Get on the Good Foot: A Dance Celebration October 25 10:29 2013 by Jermaine Rowe "Give the people what they came for" James Brown said in reference to his shows, and it seemed that the Apollo set out to do just that on the opening night of "James Brown - Ge t on the Good Foot" dance celebration concert in Harlem. It was fitting that the concert opened with a welcome speech by Rev. Al Sharpton , given the historic relationship between the Apollo Theatre and James Brown . Sharpton reflected on his connection with Brown on the very stage that we were about to experience the evening's performance. The hour-long performance that followed showcased a variety of choreographers exploring the music of James Brown , danced by the Philadelphia Dance Company (PHILADANCO) and three (3) non-affiliated featured soloists. The show opened with a dynamic and exciting sound play with music and voice -overs of Brown that was effective in setting up the scene for the legacy that was being honored. The fault of the program, however, was that you ended up watching the first three choreographers before you realized that the show was not going to have breaks between each work. This made the flow seem unorganized and unclear. Despite this, "Too Funky," choreographed by Otis Sallid , saw a vibrant, young, and talented group of dancers let loose to the funky sounds of a well- arranged set of songs. The team did such a great job of setting up the excitement of the evening that I found myself a little disappointed by the lack of structure in Sallid's work. -

James Brown Is Alive! Matt Stauffer [=\ [=\ [=\ WRITER’S COMMENT: On the first day of class Seth asked us what kind of music we like. I’ve always been a huge James Brown fan (anyone who can list what he had for dinner and call it a song is all right by me). That he had recently died helped me decide that I would find some way to write about him. But explaining his importance to poetry and orality was difficult. It was a case of knowing James Brown is an important figure, but not knowing how to explain it. The solution was simply to listen to music, and hear James Brown’s influence, and hear what his influences were. People like Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Wilson Pickett, Heavy D and a bunch of others came up, and from there it was just a matter of searching out the right information to help connect those dots. Also, I’m a big fan of the word “eschew.” —Matt Stauffer INSTRUCTOR’S COMMENT: My most immediate reaction to Matt Stauffer’s work in this essay was admiration for his ability to bridge disciplines, bringing together African American history, musicology, literary history, and close reading. As his instructor for English 4, I can see the way he integrates his reading in sound poetry and the theories of Walter Ong and Roland Barthes with his long-standing interest in funk, soul and hip-hop, the truly popular poetries of our era since the 1960s. His willingness to take seriously the ‘get back’-s and ‘hit me’-s of James Brown—sounds we usually hear but do not listen to—indeed enlivens our experience of the Godfather of Soul. -

The purpose is to examine child imagery in Dickinson's work, and the investigation is based on the chronological age of children in the images. Dickinson's small child exists in mystical communion with nature and deity. Inevitably the child is wrenched from this divine state by one of three estranging forces: adult society, death, or love. After the estrangement the state of childhood may be regained only after death, at which time the soul enters immortality as a small child. Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 I w£S£S> F 74^7 ABSTRACT This thesis focusses on the activities of a group of young French people staying in a hostel in Noumea from 1991 to 1993. It draws on my fieldwork in Noumea and Mare in the Loyalty Islands of New Caledonia. The main part of the thesis looks at the interactions of this group of young people with other ethnic and social groups living in New Caledonia. These include the Kanaks, the “Caldoches” (native-born Caledonians of French origin), the “Metros” (immigrants from metropolitan France), Pacific islanders, Vietnamese and Indonesians. The thesis also includes a short section describing Mare itself and my fieldwork there. Particular attention is paid to the Kanaks and to the Caldoches, whose rural and urban lifestyles are compared and contrasted to those of the young people being studied.
