  • Journey to Turkey: a Survey of Culture, Economics and Politics of Turkey
IAS 3950.026 Journey to Turkey: A Survey of Culture, Economics and Politics of Turkey IAS 3950 Journey to Turkey: A Survey of Culture, Economics and Politics of Turkey Course duration: May 19 – June 6, 2015 Instructor: Firat Demir; Office: CCD1, Room: 436; Office hours: By appointment; Tel. 325-5844; E-mail: [email protected] 1. Course Objective The Anatolian Peninsula that connects Asia and Europe has been at the epicenter of many empires and civilizations for thousands of years. Any attempt to understand the culture, institutions and many of the current challenges present in modern Turkey should begin with the study of these civilizations, which have contributed immensely to the development of the Western and Asian civilizations. After all, this is the place where the words Asia and Europe were coined and where the very first monumental structures in history were built (Gobeklitepe, dating back to 10000 BC). Also, I should mention that the father of modern history, Herodotus was a native of Turkey (a title first conferred by Cicero). This course is comparative and interdisciplinary in nature and crosses multiple disciplines including arts, sociology, cultural studies, history, urban planning, economics, and politics. We will constantly compare and contrast the past and the present, East and the West, Turkey and Europe, modern and archaic, secular and religious, democratic and authoritarian, etc. A special attention will be paid to challenge students’ pre-conceived notions, opinions, perspectives and attitudes towards Western vs. Non-Western civilizations, particularly so for those involving the Middle East and Europe. During our journey, we will visit thousand + years old churches, synagogues, mosques, ancient temples, palaces, cities, monuments as well as the most exquisite examples of modern art, and perhaps not so exquisite examples of modern architecture.

  • First Thoughts--Herodotus
N'O" FOR PUBLICATION ASA-1 WITHOUT WRITER'S CONSENT INSTITUTE OF CURRENT WORLD AFFAIRS Istanbul, 27 September 1994 Mr Peter Bird Martin, Executive Director Institute of Current World Affairs 4 West Wheelock Street Hanover, NH 03755 USA Dear Peter: First thoughts Herodotus I returned from visiting my sister in Canton, packed up my long life in Prague in three whirlwind, jet-lagged days, and flew to Istanbul. I hope I may be forgiven the wave of culture shock which hit me when gothic spires resolved themselves into minarets, Dragon Boats on the Pearl River into oil tankers on the Bosphoms, and I first heard the muezzins. That wave has now started to subside. This "Newsletter" is my first account of what I have begun to see. I confess at once to a healthy diffidence that I see very well yet. Medieval scholars commonly began any work with an apology for being unequal to the task at hand, and I am happy to follow in that tradition. I have only actively explored Istanbul through the end of summer: the short space, in fact, from the ripening of wild blackberry along the Bosphoms to the first appearance this week of portable charcoal stoves for roasting chestnuts in front of the Blue Mosque. So I am very wary of capsule judgments in such a complicated place, or claiming authority prematurely for what I observe. But what sort of authority? What sort of observations? Embarking on a fellowship as gorgeous as this, offering (practically demanding) release from the cathedocracy, the tyranny of degrees and academic trade- unionism, or the conventional wisdom of the policy-planners all the worlds I've known, in short I would be sorry to find I had confmed my "Newsletters" to news, or foreign policy commentary, or "current events" at all.

  • Chapter 3 Road Network and Traffic Volume
The Study on Integrated Urban Transportation Master Plan for Istanbul Metropolitan Area in the Republic of Turkey Final Report Chapter 3 Chapter 3 Road Network and Traffic Volume 3.1 Road Network 3.1.1 Inter-regional Road Network 1) Existing Road Turkey is situated at the transit corridor between South-east Europe and the Middle East. Since “The Declaration for The Construction of International Arteries” (AGR) prepared by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN/ECE) in 1950 in Geneva, Turkey has developed international corridors connecting it to Southern Europe, because the international road network of AGR included an extension to Turkey. According to the provisions of AGR, two arteries should reach Turkey as E-Road. These are E-80 entering from the Bulgarian border (Kapikule) and E-90 entering from the Greek border (Ipsala). These two main routes link the International Road Network of Europe with the Middle East and Asia at southern and eastern borders of Turkey via Anatolia. Source: KGM, Ministry of Transportation Figure 3.1.1 International Road Network through Turkey, 2007 In addition to the E-Roads, the Trans-European Motorway (TEM) project is ongoing and it covers the whole country as an expressway network. The TEM highway network in Turkey starts from Edirne at the Bulgarian border and passes through Istanbul via the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge and parts into two branches in Ankara going eastward and southward. Its eastern branch again parts into two branches in Askale. One of them reaches Trabzon in the Black Sea Region, and the other ends in Gurbulak at the Iranian border.

Prof. Dr. Mehmet Kalpaklı January 2018 In the early 17th-century Ottoman Empire, a series of sociocultural, administrative, political, and economic changes were underway that left their mark on how the learned and cultural elite viewed the empire and themselves. Though contemporary sources reflect these shifts in many ways , this period’s rich corpus of invective verse , centering around the poet Nefʿī , has been understudied as a historical source. This dissertation rectifies this neglect by examining this invective corpus as a locus of rivalries and enmities revealing how those involved agonistically defined and were defined by their others, thus necessarily defining themselves in the process. Observing this process of definition and self-definition in the light of contemporary historical developments and sources, the dissertation examines invectives produced against both patrons ( i.e., vertical invective) and fellow poet/clients ( i.e., horizontal invective) in such a way as to demonstrate how the ferocity of the period’s invective verse, and reactions thereto, laid bare how Ottoman elites’ imaginary of themselves was in fact a marginalizing construct.
