• l •• DESCRIPTION OF THE SWANQUARTER WILDERNESS AREA SWANQUARTER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE A part of the John Gray Blount 10,240-acre grant, No. 427, dated November 26, 1799, and all of the Anthony Tooley 200-acre grant, No. 66, dated October 25, 1782, lying on the east side of Juniper Bay, between the head of Juniper Bay Creek and West Bluff Bay, on the north side of Pamlico Sound, more particularly described as follows: BEGINNING at the approximate corner common to the John Gray Blount 10,240-acre grant, the William Turner 150-acre grant, No. 50, dated October 25, 1782, and the James English 100-acre grant, No. 154, dated August 9, 1786, on the south side and near the head of Juniper Bay Creek opposite the mouth of the Hydeland Canal, a standard concrete post; thence SOUTHWESTERLY, with the John Gray Blount 10,240-acre grant, down the left or south bank of Juniper Bay Creek, approximately 11,000 feet to a point of land at the confluence of Juniper Bay Creek, Northwest Creek and Juniper Bay, a standard concrete post; thence SOUTHWESTERLY and SOUTHEASTERLY, with the east shore of Juniper Bay approximately 17,200 feet to the point of land at the confluence of said bay and Buck Creek, a point; thence NORTHEASTERLY and EASTERLY, with the west and north bank (right bank) of Buck Creek, approximately 5,300 feet to its head, a point; thence EASTERLY and SOUTH ERLY, with the south and east (left) bank of said Buck Creek, approximately 4,500 feet to its confluence with Juniper Bay, a point; thence SOUTHEASTERLY, with said shore of Juniper Bay, approximately 4,500 feet to the confluence of the shore of Laurel Creek, a point; thence EASTERLY, NORTHERLY, SOUTHERLY and WESTERLY, with the banks of said Laurel Creek, approximately 3,600 feet to its confluence with said Juniper Bay, a point; thence SOUTHEASTERLY, with the shore of said Juniper Bay, approximately 1,600 feet to the most southerly tip of Juniper Bay Point, a point; thence NORTHEASTERLY, EASTERLY and SOUTHERLY, with the shore of Cunning Harbor Bay, approximately 17,400 feet to the mouth of West Bluff Bay, a point; thence NORTH EASTERLY, with the shore of said West Bluff Bay, approximately 8,000 feet to the intersection of the Refuge boundary with Closing Order boundary, and the beginning corner of said John Gray Blount 10,240-acre grant, a l" iron pipe; thence with four courses with said Refuge boundary, N. 63°03' W., 19,869.30 feet, a standard concrete post; N. 43°03' E., 10,198.32 feet, al~" iron pipe; N. 0°03' E., 1,702.80 feet, a l" iron pipe; S. 89°58' W., 1,320 feet to the PLACE OF BEGINNING, containing 3,439.85 acres, more or less, and All of Cunning Harbor Island, a small marsh island, being a part of the John Gray Blount 10,240-acre grant, No. 427, dated November 26, 1799, lying south of the point separting Cunning Harbor Bay from West Bluff Bay on the north shore of Pamlico Sound, containing 10.71 acres, more or less, and A small marsh island, being a part of the John Gray Blount 10,240-acre grant, No. 427, dated November 26, 1799, lying in the mouth of a small cove near the left or south bank of Juniper Bay Creek, approximately 990 feet from the mouth thereof, containing 0.14 acre, more or less, and A part of the John Allen 640-acre grant, No. 363, dated August 28, 1795, a part of the Josiah Jarvis 300- acre grant, No. 181, dated October 30, 1765, a part of the Josiah Jarvis 640-acre grant, No. 327, dated November 26, 1793, and a part of the Josiah Jarvis 910- acre grant, No. 158, dated August 9, 1786, lying on the west shore of Juniper Bay, north of Thorofare Creek and south of Well Creek Canal that empties into Well Creek, more particularly described as follows: BEGINNING at a corner on the west shore of Juniper Bay at the mouth and on the right or south bank of Well Creek, a l~" iron pipe; thence with said bank, S. 85°48 1 W., 397.98 feet to the confluence of the north and south forks of Well Creek, a point; thence with the centerline of the north fork of said Well Creek, N. 48°44 1 W., 159.06 feet to the head of the north fork of Well Creek and in the centerline and at the mouth of Well Creek or "Ben Harris" Canal, a point; thence N. 74°19 1 W., with the said centerline of Well Creek Canal and the centerline of a dry ditch, 3,110.58 feet, a standard concrete post; thence leav ing said ditch, S. 1°11' E., approximately 5,581.62 feet to the north bank of Thorofare Creek or "Old Haulover," a l~" iron pipe; thence EASTERLY with said north bank, approximately 3,572.58 feet to the mouth of said Creek and the west shore of Juniper Bay, a l ~ " iron pipe; thence NORTHERLY, with said west shore of Juniper Bay, approximately 4,442 feet to the PLACE OF BEGINNING, containing 320.48 acres, more or less, and All of the John Hall 640-acre grant, No. 320, dated January 9, 1795, known as Marsh Island, lying between Swanquarter and Juniper Bays on the north side of Great Island Narrows and south of Thorofare Creek or Old Haulover, more particularly described as follows: BEGINNING at the beginning corner of the John Hall 640-acre grant, No. 320, at the mouth and on the south bank of Thorofare Creek of Old Haulover, on the west shore of Juniper Bay, a standard concrete post; thence WESTERLY, with the south bank of said Thorofare Creek or Old Haulover, approximately 8,800 feet to a point on the said south bank at the confluence of said Thorofare Creek and Caffee Creek, a point; thence with the south bank of Caffee Creek, WESTERLY, approximately 1,929 feet to the mouth of Caffee Creek at Egg Island Bay, a point; thence with the south shore of said Egg Island Bay, SOUTHWESTERLY, approximately 2,460 feet to the east bank of Island Creek, a point; thence SOUTH ERLY and NORTHWESTERLY, crossing Island Creek, approxi mately 900 feet to Caffee Bay, a point; thence with the south shore of said Caffee Bay, WESTERLY, approximately 6,700 feet to the east bank of Balls Creek, a point; thence SOUTHERLY and NORTHERLY, with the bank of Balls Creek, approximately 1,358 feet to the shore of Caffee Bay, a point; thence WESTERLY, with said shore of Caffee Bay, approximately 1,303 feet to Drum Point, a point; thence SOUTHERLY, with the east shore of Swanquarter Bay, approximately 2,275 feet to Middle Point, a point; thence continuing with said east shore of Swanquarter Bay, SOUTHERLY, approximately 2,022 feet to Crab Point, a point; thence EASTERLY and SOUTHEAST ERLY around the shore of Crab Cove and with the shore of said Swanquarter Bay, approximately 10,165 feet to the point on the north shore at the west entrance of Great Island Narrows, a standard concrete post; thence continuing with the north shore of Great Island Narrows and with the west shore of Juniper Bay, EASTERLY, approximately 7,075 feet to Giles Point, al" iron pipe; thence NORTHERLY, continuing with said west shore of Juniper Bay, approximately 3,506 to Blackbird Point, a l ~ " iron pipe; thence NORTHERLY, with said west shore of Juniper Bay, approximately 8,610 feet to the PLACE OF BEGINNING, containing 1,870.83 acres, more or less, and A part of the John Hall 640-acre grant, No. 320, dated January 9, 1795, a small island lying at the mouth of Island Creek, adjacent to the northwest shore of Marsh Island, containing 0.33 acre, more or less, and All of Great Island, lying in Pamlico Sound, south of Great Island Narrows, being a part of the John Hall 640- acre grant, No. 318, dated January 9, 1795, containing 660.85 acres, more or less, and All of Little Island, lying on the northwest side of Great Island, at the mouth of Great Island Harbor, being a part of the John Hall 640-acre grant, No. 318, dated January 9, 1795, containing 1.84 acres, more or less, and That part of Judith Island lying south of the Haulover, being all of the William Russel 100-acre grant, No. 425, dated June 7, 1799, part of the Benjamin Mason 400-acre grant, No. 35, dated May 14, 1772, part of the John Hall 2,560-acre grant, No. 319, dated January 9, 1795, all of the M. Makeley 100-acre grant, No. 8626, dated June 12, 1888, part of the John Hall 2,560-acre grant, No. 319, claimed by M. Makeley and part of the John Tuley 100-acre grant, No. 503, dated October 26, 1767, and bounded on the north by waters of Rose Bay and Deep Bay, on the east by waters of Swanquarter Bay and Eastard Bay, on the south by waters of Shell Narrows, Shell Bay, White Perch Bay and Tolers Bay and on the west by waters of Rose Bay, containing 2,026.63 acres, more or less, and An Unnamed Island, lying about 1,650 feet southeasterly from the east end of the Haulover, near the northeast shore of Judith Island and in Swanquarter Bay, being a part of the John Hall 2,560-acre grant, No.
