The Reconnect with Reading campaign re-emphasized books and reading as core values of Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL) at a time when the message that reading is important needed to be heard in Cuyahoga County. The participation of local celebrities helped give the campaign high visibility and advanced the idea that CCPL has reading materials for everyone, regardless of their age, occupation or interests. It has been 10 years since the Reconnect with Reading campaign, and I feel we are still reaping the benefits. CCPL has topped the nation in per capita circulation for eight years in a row, and we have introduced many successful reading-related programs and services. Today, CCPL is firmly established as the go-to resource for all things literary. This February we are launching a new campaign, called Find Yourself Here, to raise awareness of the many fantastic resources and services we offer to lifelong learners, world travelers, job seekers, career changers, busy parents, curious makers and more. Reading and books are still our core values, but the fact is our top-rated library system offers so much more – and we want everyone to know it. You’ll soon see the Find Yourself Here campaign throughout the county. I hope it inspires you to dig deeper and explore Cuyahoga County Public Library in new and exciting ways. The City Club of Cleveland, Playhouse Square and public libraries in Cuyahoga County are teaming up to bring people together through the reading and discussion of a common book – Matthew Desmond’s powerful and thought-provoking best-seller, Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City. Libraries throughout the county will hold book discussions, film screenings and community events leading up to a free community event with author Matthew Desmond on Thursday, March 15 in the Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square. For a complete listing of One Community Reads events, visit onecommunityreads.org. One Community Reads is designed to broaden and deepen our appreciation of reading and compel friends, families and neighbors to share their experiences while reading the same book. The project is further intended to engage the community in dialogue on one of America’s most devastating problems. This program is made possible, in part, by Ohio Humanities, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. Any views, findings, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
