As part of that initiative, The Cleveland Foundation has awarded local anchor institutions nearly half a million dollars in grant funding to establish programs that bridge the digital divide. Huntington National Bank has also gotten involved, generously contributing an additional $50,000 to the effort. Cuyahoga County Public Library is proud to have been chosen as one of the local anchor institutions to be awarded funding – which we have used to launch a new Wi-Fi hotspot lending program. Our branches provide free high-speed Wi-Fi access and public computer stations, but we know that residents’ online needs don’t necessarily begin and end during the hours we’re open. Through our hotspot lending program, we can provide cardholders with Wi-Fi access any time and virtually anywhere they need it. Customers can visit our Garfi eld Heights, Maple Heights, Southeast and Warrensville Heights branches to check out portable 4G Wi-Fi hotspots with unlimited data just like they would a book or DVD. We chose these four branches for the hotspot program because as many as 40 percent of the households in the communities they serve do not have internet access. CCPL was also recently selected as one of only four area nonprofi t organizations to receive $50,000 in grant funding through the Google.org Impact Challenge Cleveland, a Grow with Google initiative. Grants awarded through the challenge support winning organizations’ work to create economic opportunities for the underserved. More than 60 local nonprofi ts took the challenge and submitted ideas for funding consideration. A panel of local advisers helped choose the four winners. We were thrilled to be selected. Our winning idea, a hotspot lending program for adult students, bridges the digital divide by providing adults enrolled in GED® classes with free portable Wi-Fi access so they can obtain their high school equivalency degrees faster and, ultimately, secure employment with a family-sustaining wage. After announcing the four Impact Challenge Cleveland winners, Google.org put it to a public to vote to decide which organization’s idea should receive an additional $50,000 in funding. After a week of public voting, CCPL received the most votes and won the additional funding. I want to thank everyone who voted for CCPL and shared our message. You made the difference! The additional funding that you helped CCPL win will allow us to expand our hotspot lending program to provide twice as many adult learners with free internet access. Thanks to the support of The Cleveland Foundation, Huntington National Bank, Google.org and everyone who voted for CCPL, we are taking big steps toward greater digital inclusion in our county. I invite you to learn more about our hotspot lending service at cuyahogalibrary.org/hotspots. Regards, Sari Feldman Executive Director 1 MEET THE AUTHORS E’RE ALWAYS booking authors!
