  • Refining Your Timpani Roll by Tom Freer
Refining Your Timpani Roll by Tom Freer Following are some techniques and calisthenics for refining one's timpani roll. This is one of a timpanist's most frequently used techniques, yet it seems to get minimal attention in practice and development. To get started you should have the following: 1. Metronome (best quality you can afford) 2. Tape recorder, mini disc recorder, or video camera 3. Mirror 4. Towels to mute timpani 5. Method Books: Eckehardt, Keune - Pauken (Ein Schulwerk) Fred Hinger - Technique for the Virtuoso Timpanist Saul Goodman - Modern Method for Timpani Friese/Lepak - Timpani Method Heinrich Knauer - all books Richard Hochrainer - all books Assuming the player has a good knowledge of roll technique, I will not elaborate on such things as forte piano rolls, measured rolls, and the like. However, I will touch on roll attack, speed, and release. To get started, using two timpani, place a mirror on your music stand right in front of you for clear viewing, place a towel on each drum opposite your playing area, place your metronome on your music stand, and get your tape player ready to record. It may sound strange at first, but using the towels on the heads creates a timpani "practice pad" which not only saves your ears a bit but is immensely helpful in exposing any flaws you may not notice because of the very forgiving resonance of the ringing timpani head. Now that you are set up and ready with your two timpani practice pads. Keep in mind that you are trying to improve the evenness of your hands and smoothness of your roll.

Volume 19 Issue 6 June 1, 2019 The 1958 - 1960 Lincolns, Interesting Automobiles A totally different Lincoln from the ones who came before it. Experiencing a shortage of articles from our members, we went back into the archives of Continental Comments for an interesting article; which you might enjoy. Lincoln models 1958 through 1960 were both interesting from a mechanical and stylistic standpoint. A lot of folks were not quite sure if the new look of these models was something that they would really like over a period of time. Compared to the 1956 and 1957 models, they really were quite different. Boxier and somewhat larger by most measurements. Now some 60 years later, they are sort of coming into their own. Nice examples will bring a lot of money today, especially if they are convertibles. We have several of these models owned by North Star club members, and they do speak quite highly of them. This article was written by Tim Howley and appeared in the July August 2002 issue of Conti- nental Comments. It is an interesting story, and it looks at these models in a fairly object fashion. Welcome to the We hope you enjoy reading it. Northstar News, the The late Fifties is a fascinating era in automobile styling. It produced the ultimate in ba- roque automobile architecture, especially in the biggest American cars. We think of the 1959 monthly publication of Cadillac and 1957-59 Imperial as being the most interesting examples. But when you set the Northstar Region them alongside the 1958 Lincoln, and to a degree the 1959 and 1960 versions, they don't even of the Lincoln and begin to compare in terms of uniqueness of design.

  • MD Tour Press Release
Ubu Projex Press Information dated 2/28/11 [email protected] The Annotated Modern Dance Pere Ubu tours Europe in May 2011 with a special program, "The Annotated Modern Dance." The band will perform its seminal debut album in its entirety along with the Hearpen singles that preceded it. Brief anecdotes will precede the songs. "The Modern Dance" was released in February 1978 and stunned the pop and punk worlds with its vision and audac- ity. It quickly became a fixture in Great / Most Influential Albums Of All Time lists. Jon Savage, Sounds, 2/11/78 Uh-oh, this is getting frustrating, trying to tell you how good this is - black and white is an inadequate substitute for the impact heard... This is a brilliant debut. Granted it lacks the superficial accessibility of lesser works, but this time around the aroma lingers. This is built to last! Ubu's world is rarely comfortable, full of the space beyond the electric light and what it does to people, but always direct and unwavering. And courageous. Ian Birch, Melody Maker, 3/18/78 It's a devastating debut...this album has struck me with a vengeance. Because it delivers such a powerful, complex and open-ended punch, it's almost impossible at such an early stage to explain why or how in full detail. David Stubbs, Uncut, August 2006 - 5 Stars Announced by the siren squeal of Allen Ravenstine's analogue synth which launches "Non- Alignment Pact," The Modern Dance is a product of Cleveland, the living model of punk's post-industrial wasteland.

Deliciously Crazy By Order Of Mayor Pawlicki, Pere Ubu (2CD, Cherry Red) When I interviews David Thomas, lead singer of Pere Ubu, back the end of the 20th Century, he had this to say about gigs: 'We don't like touring. We like the playing but not the driving. We don't like being in the newspaper. We don't have anything to say that anybody wants to hear. We don't care. I think that sums it up.' Mind you, he also said that he 'always thought [Pere Ubu] were a very traditional rock band. No, we are a very traditional rock band and always have been. It's not our fault that others have abandoned their roots and culture and traditions.' If you've heard the lurching, cacophonous monster that is Pere Ubu making music then you will probably be as sceptical as me. Pere Ubu came screaming out of Cleveland Ohio on the tail of American new wave and punk. Desperate to find new things to write about, the UK music press created scenes were there were none, invented fictional success stories and nonsensical controversies, launching a thousand bands they would later torpedo and sink. Some how, Pere Ubu are still afloat on an ocean of ragged vocals, jagged guitar, squawky synthesizers and offbeat rhythms. The press release uses the phrases 'dedicated brutality' which comes pretty close. I love Pere Ubu. They have never sounded like anyone else, have never bowed to peer or critical pressure, and have ploughed their own way through the music industry from the word go.

At CBGB OMFUG:1977 Send to Friend jump to allmovie Dead Boys jump to allgame Review by Greg Prato Very little pro-shot, color footage exists of the first wave of CBGB's bands, let alone a full show. But the Dead Boys were one of the few lucky acts to have had an entire show taped (which was done originally for a TV special on the punk rock movement), and the results can now finally be sampled in their entirety on the Live at CBGB 1977 DVD. Perhaps since they knew they were being filmed that night, the bandmembers pull no punches in this performance, especially Stiv Bators, who hands in such an over the top performance that he often collapses on-stage at the end of the numbers. Also interesting is to see what an authentic CB's crowd looked like way back when — few to no Mohawks or safety pins are detected — for the most part, just a regular-looking crowd. Taped right around the time of the release of the group's classic debut, Young Loud & Snotty, many of the expected early faves turn up here in turbocharged form, including "Sonic Reducer," "All This and More," and "What Love Is," as well as an explosive set-closing cover of the Stooges' "Search and Destroy." Also included as a bonus are interviews with all of the group's bandmembers from the same day of the show, as well as a modern-day chat with Cheetah Chrome.
