An acquaintance from the business world recently said that what he likes about ABC is our “effective business model” and wondered whether we had ever distributed a description of it. In response, we described ABC’s culture instead. Year after year, it is what drives our success. Some aspects of ABC’s culture are not unique. We have top-notch staff and board; use the best science available; are unequivocally ethical; and follow excellent business practices. But other aspects of ABC stand out. With every project, we: • Get results that exceed expectations. Like the hummingbird in our logo, we are fearless, nimble, and fast-moving in achieving change for birds now. • Focus rigorously on our mission. For example, it is not within the scope of our mission to address the basic causes of climate change. But we plant millions of trees to contribute to bird habitat—helping the fight against climate change in the process. • Make no small plans. Small plans get small results. Our vision encompasses the conservation of all bird species in the Western Hemisphere. • Take pride in having low overhead and high output. ABC consistently receives Charity Navigator’s highest rating. • Make partnerships fundamental to almost everything we do. ABC has founded the Alliance for Zero Extinction, the Bird Conservation Alliance, and the National Pesticide Reform Coalition; we play leading roles in Partners in Flight, the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, and many Joint Ventures. • Are fearless in protecting birds. Preventing the extinction of the rarest birds is essential to ABC’s mission. In 2015 alone, we helped partner organizations in 12 Latin American countries protect core habitat for bird species at 26 Alliance for Zero Extinction (AZE) sites. We also expanded or established reserves in six countries that protect more than 6,000 acres of additional bird habitat.

In Hawai’i, where so many birds have gone extinct and native forest birds teeter on the brink, ABC’s ability to protect declining populations grows each year.

Meet ABC Staff:

Hannah Nevins, ABC’s Seabird Program Director, has worked as a biologist in Alaska, Antarctica, and New Zealand, but her hometown has always been Santa Cruz, California. Hannah grew up exploring tide pools, creeks, and redwoods—and surfing.

As a young scientist she went to the remote Laysan Island, where nearly a million nesting seabirds greeted her: noddies, terns, frigatebirds with bright-red throat pouches. She was hooked! But she also saw a disturbing number of dead albatrosses that had ingested cigarette lighters, toothbrushes, and other marine debris.

She’s inspired to help people understand the impact humans have on seabirds. “Our biggest challenge is to communicate the urgency of the issues—habitat loss, non-native predators, bycatch, and climate change,” Hannah says. “I think we can make change happen.” Photo by Bob Johns, 2014

Our habitat conservation efforts benefit birds across the Americas. However, reversing the population declines of migratory birds that require large landscapes in multiple countries is the most challenging conservation issue we face. It requires science, cooperation, and resources on an unprecedented scale. To help migratory birds across their full life cycles, ABC is managing landscapes on birds’ breeding and wintering grounds, as well as stopover habitats in between.

Growing up near Chicago, Jim Giocomo liked math and wanted to be an aquatic biologist. But in college, he dis- covered that bird population data was more fun—and also meant he could spend his time looking for nests. “Like Easter every day during the breeding season,” says Jim, who is Coordinator of the Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture.

Finding and monitoring bird nests allows Jim to learn something about the personality of individual birds. Even within individual species there is wide variation in the way the parents will respond to visitors. “Some will sneak off the nest quietly, some will make noise to lead you away, and a few will try to scare you away with aggressive displays.” Working in conservation, Jim appreciates that no two days are alike. And when he needs a bit of

These are not distant problems, but ones that often occur close to home. Collisions with glass windows and wind turbines, free-roaming cats, deadly pesticides, and poorly managed fisheries together kill billions of birds each year. With sound science as our guide, ABC aims to eliminate or significantly reduce these threats by educating the public, policy makers, and government agencies, and by influencing policy, laws, and regulations to benefit birds.

ABC plays a unique role in the bird conservation community. In 2015, by investing in other organizations with our own time and resources, we helped 19 partners in Latin America and the Caribbean become stronger financially, organizationally, and programmatically. We also brought wide-ranging groups together to achieve more for birds than we could accomplish alone. Helping to raise funds, sponsoring science, building coalitions—all of these actions ultimately produce results that benefit birds.

Meet ABC Staff:

David Wiedenfeld has been drawn to birds ever since he was a child growing up in Texas, where Long-billed Curlews wintered in the fields behind his house. As ABC’s Senior Conservation Scientist, David works to design, monitor, and evaluate projects, helping to ensure our success.

Before joining ABC in 2007 he lived and worked in the Galapagos Islands as Head of the Department of Vertebrate Ecology at the Charles Darwin Research Station. The archipelago’s birds and other animals are remarkably fearless. A Galapagos Hawk once flew in half a mile and landed about 10 feet away, David says, “just to see what these odd, big, two-legged animals were doing on its island.”

Although climate change and human population growth are tremendous challenges for bird conservation, David says, “The biggest opportunity is people’s growing
