The Soraya Joins Martha Graham Dance Company and Wild Up for the June 19 World Premiere of a Digital Dance Creation Immediate Tragedy Inspired by Martha Graham’s lost solo from 1937, this reimagined version will feature 14 dancers and include new music composed by Wild Up’s Christopher Rountree (New York, NY), May 28, 2020—The ongoing collaboration by three major arts organizations— Martha Graham Dance Company, the Los Angeles-based Wild Up music collective, and The Soraya—will continue June 19 with the premiere of a digital dance inspired by archival remnants of Martha Graham’s Immediate Tragedy, a solo she created in 1937 in response to the Spanish Civil War. Graham created the solo in collaboration with composer Henry Cowell, but it was never filmed and has been considered lost for decades. Drawing on the common experience of today’s immediate tragedy – the global pandemic -- the 22 artists creating the project are collaborating from locations across the U.S. and Europe using a variety of technologies to coordinate movement, music, and digital design. The new digital Immediate Tragedy, commissioned by The Soraya, will premiere online Friday, June 19 at 4pm (Pacific)/7pm (EST) during Fridays at 4 on The Soraya Facebook page, and Saturday, June 20 at 11:30am/2:30pm at the Martha Matinee on the Graham Company’s YouTube Channel. In its new iteration, Immediate Tragedy will feature 14 dancers and 6 musicians each recorded from the safety of their homes. Martha Graham Dance Company’s Artistic Director Janet Eilber, in consultation with Rountree and The Soraya’s Executive Director, Thor Steingraber, suggested the long-distance creative process inspired by a cache of recently rediscovered materials—over 30 photos, musical notations, letters and reviews all relating to the 1937 solo. -

Scene and Heard: A Profile of Laura Colella She sits quietly in a coffee shop, waiting. She is of small stature, and fine boned. She has striking eyes and a beautiful face, one that easily could be in front of the camera. Providence born and raised, no one she knew ever talked about becoming a filmmaker. She is definitely under the radar – but is soaring very high. This is Laura Colella. In her 44 years, she has managed to impress some very important people in the film world. One of those folks is Paul Thomas Anderson – the same Paul Thomas Anderson who wrote and directed The Master, There Will Be Blood, Boogie Nights and my personal favorite (and I believe his), Magnolia. Last February, he hosted a screening of her film Breakfast with Curtis in LA, and held a lengthy Q & A session afterward. In the same month, at the Independent Spirit Awards, the film was nominated for the John Cassavetes Award for Best Feature made for under $500,000, and won a $50,000 distribution grant from Jameson. Her love of film started early. She grew up heavily involved in theater, was in a few productions at Trinity Rep, and worked there as a production assistant. “My first year in college at Harvard, my boyfriend took me to the end-of-year film screenings at RISD, which opened up that world of possibility for me. I discovered the excellent film department at Harvard, which centered on 16MM production, became totally immersed in it, and never looked back.” Laura now has three features under her belt – Tax Day, her first, for which she received a special equipment grant through the Sundance Institute, portrays two women on their way to the post office on that dreaded day, April 15. -

Volume 19 Issue 6 June 1, 2019 The 1958 - 1960 Lincolns, Interesting Automobiles A totally different Lincoln from the ones who came before it. Experiencing a shortage of articles from our members, we went back into the archives of Continental Comments for an interesting article; which you might enjoy. Lincoln models 1958 through 1960 were both interesting from a mechanical and stylistic standpoint. A lot of folks were not quite sure if the new look of these models was something that they would really like over a period of time. Compared to the 1956 and 1957 models, they really were quite different. Boxier and somewhat larger by most measurements. Now some 60 years later, they are sort of coming into their own. Nice examples will bring a lot of money today, especially if they are convertibles. We have several of these models owned by North Star club members, and they do speak quite highly of them. This article was written by Tim Howley and appeared in the July August 2002 issue of Conti- nental Comments. It is an interesting story, and it looks at these models in a fairly object fashion. But when you set the Northstar Region them alongside the 1958 Lincoln, and to a degree the 1959 and 1960 versions, they don't even of the Lincoln and begin to compare in terms of uniqueness of design. -

The Reconnect with Reading campaign re-emphasized books and reading as core values of Cuyahoga County Public Library (CCPL) at a time when the message that reading is important needed to be heard in Cuyahoga County. The participation of local celebrities helped give the campaign high visibility and advanced the idea that CCPL has reading materials for everyone, regardless of their age, occupation or interests. Cate An Honors Project Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Honors in The Department of Film Studies The School of Arts and Sciences Rhode Island College 2009 Cate 1 “New” Hollywood Narratives: An Analysis of Boogie Nights and Magnolia Introduction To discuss Paul Thomas Anderson the filmmaker is to consider the current age of Hollywood filmmaking and the idea of the “new” Hollywood narrative. As writer- director of such acclaimed films as Magnolia (1999) and There Will Be Blood (2007), Anderson was praised for appearing to have “arrived at his mastery virtually overnight” with his first major release, the 1997 ensemble film Boogie Nights (Gleiberman). Anderson has long been compared to veteran filmmaker Robert Altman, whose take on the typical Hollywood narrative format has clearly influenced Anderson’s films. -

Don't Look in the Movies By RICHARD A. SHWIDER WHY ARE IMAGES OF MEN IN movies these days so desolate when it comes to real love, real sex, real families, real children and real work? Why has the art form become so detached from what is true and good? Why has our collective imagination concerning the male sex become so perverse and hallucinogenic? In short, why has the film industry declared an open hunting season on men? If you're like me, eager for a rush of inspiration that comes from seeing a manifestation of something heroic, excellent or at least a little dignified on the silver screen, 1997 was a disappointing year for representations of manhood. "Men first! Leave the women and children behind," an impulse embodied by one of the primary characters in "Titanic," is not an uplifting message. "Under those jeans is something wonderful waiting to get out," a concept at the heart of "Boogie Nights," produces no surge of pride. Certainly there was no character around like the honorable Clark Gable in "It Happened One Night," who doesn't take advantage of the affianced Claudette Colbert ("You better go back to your bed"). Some of the worst offenders in this regard were films declared by critics to be among the year's best. Here, for example, is a short list of acclaimed pictures over the last six months that sucked the soul out of my body, registering zero on my epiphany scale. -

Tim Conway - The Good-Humor man Page 1 of 3 printed from AmericanProfile.com on 4/5/2008 Tim Conway - The Good-Humor man by Paulette Cohn The family room of one of America’s favorite funnymen is paneled in dark, mahogany- stained wood, a stark contrast to the sunny comedy for which the star of McHale’s Navy and The Carol Burnett Show is best known. Even more surprising is the news that Tim Conway bought the wood at the lumber mill, cut and installed the panels, then finished it all by himself. “I have all my fingers,” he quips, wiggling all 10 digits in his house in Encino, Calif. “It’s the sign of a good carpenter.” Conway, 73, traces his handiness with a hammer to high school shop class, one of his favorite subjects because childhood dyslexia made it difficult for him to read. “People thought that I was kidding when I would read out loud in school, so they started laughing,” he recalls. “For instance, the book They Were Expendable, I read as ‘They were expandable.’ People were going, ‘This guy is great! Expandable! What are you talking about, rubber people?’” Conway liked the response. “I thought, ‘I must be funny, so I might as well continue with this.’” Wholesome entertainment His ability to make people smile eventually led him out of Chagrin Falls, Ohio (pop. 4,024), to Hollywood and a successful career on television and in the movies. His early success on McHale’s Navy led to a string of other memorable roles, most notably alongside Carol Burnett; Conway became a vital cog in Burnett’s weekly comedy machine during the 1960s and ’70s.
