Antanas Smetona Gimė 1874 M
Antanas Smetona gimė 1874 m. rugpjūčio 10 d. Užulėnio kaime (dab. Ukmergės r.) gausioje neturtingų valstiečių šeimoje. Mokėsi Tau- jėnų pradinėje mokykloje, privačiai – Ukmergėje ir Liepojoje, 1893 m. baigė Palangos progimnaziją. 1896 m. buvo pašalintas iš Mintaujos (dab. Jelgava, Latvija) gimnazijos, nes kartu su kitais lietuviais nepa- kluso reikalavimui, kad katalikai kasdienę maldą mokykloje skaitytų rusiškai. 1897 m. eksternu baigė Peterburgo 9-ąją gimnaziją. Studijavo Peterburgo universiteto Teisės fakultete, priklausė slaptai lietuvių stu- dentų draugijai. Gavęs teisininko diplomą, A. Smetona 1902 m. atvyko į Vilnių, dir- bo advokato padėjėju, vėliau – banke. Jis greit iškilo kaip vienas akty- viausių lietuvių tautinio judėjimo dalyvių. Priklausė Lietuvių demok- ratų partijai. Buvo 1905 m. gruodžio 4–5 d. vykusio Didžiojo Vilniaus Seimo narys, pirmininkavo jo posėdžiui, kuriame svarstytas Lietuvos autonomijos klausimas. A. Smetona dalyvavo daugelio lietuviškų vi- suomeninių, kultūros, švietimo organizacijų – „Aušros“, „Ryto“, „Rū- ANTANAS SMETONA tos“, Lietuvių mokslo ir Lietuvių dailės draugijų – veikloje. Talkino 1874 08 10–1944 01 09 rengiant lietuviškus leidinius: redagavo laikraščius „Vilniaus žinios“, „Lietuvos ūkininkas“, „Viltis“, 1914–1924 m. – žurnalą „Vairas“, paren- gė informacinių ir publicistinių straipsnių tautinės veiklos klausimais. Smetonų šeimos butas Vilniuje buvo lietuvių inteligentų susibūrimų ir diskusijų vieta. Pirmojo pasaulinio karo metais Vilniuje pradėjusi veikti Lietuvių draugija nukentėjusiesiems dėl karo šelpti greit tapo ne tik labdaros organizacija, bet ir lietuvių politinės veiklos centru. Nuo pat įkūrimo organizacijoje dirbęs, o 1914 m. pabaigoje jos Centro komiteto vado- vu tapęs A. Smetona rūpinosi, kad kraštą okupavusios Vokietijos val- džios sprendimai kuo mažiau alintų Lietuvos žmones. 1916 m. kartu su Steponu Kairiu ir Jurgiu Šauliu dalyvavo Trečiajame pavergtųjų tautų kongrese. -

Singing tradition of the Klaipėda region preserved in Lithuania and in the émigré communities In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries it was the Lithuanian songs of East Prussia that opened the way for Lithuanian language and culture into Western Europe. The elegiac folk poetry, with characteristically straightforward structure and plain subject matter, fascinated the enlightened minds of artists and scholars, kindling their imagination and providing inspiration for their own creative work. Certain ideas that originated in the Age of Enlightenment and gained currency in Western Europe, coupled with the nascent concern about the newly discovered yet already vanishing layer of traditional culture, lent an important impetus for preservation of that obsolescent culture. It was then that the Lithuanian songs were first recorded, published and researched. The network of Prussian clergymen who were the first collectors of folklore formed around Liudvikas Rėza (Ludwig Rhesa) (1776‒1840), a professor at the University of Königsberg, amassed a priceless repository of Lithuanian non-material culture, which kept growing by the effort of countless devout enthusiasts during the coming two hundred years. The present collection of Songs and Music from the Klaipėda Region is yet another contribution to this ever expanding repository. At long last we will have an opportunity to hear the real sound of what many of us have only known in the form of written down verses, notated melodies, and interpretations thereof. As a matter of fact, no sound recordings of authentic Prussian Lithuanian songs or instrumental music have been published in Lithuania in the course of the 20th century. On the other hand, there was no apparent lack of valuable materials preserved at folklore archives and informants who could have sung Lithuanian folk songs for the compilers of sound anthologies in the middle of 26 the 20th century. -

Brazauskas in Power: An Assessment * JULIUS SMULKSTYS The victory of Lithuania's Democratic Labor Party (LDDP) in the parliamentary elections of October and November 1992 was lamented by many in the West as the return of the former Communists to power in a country that had played a major role in the dismantling of the Soviet Union. If just a few years ago Lithuania had been the trailblazer in the struggle for independence and democracy, now it seemed to be the leader in efforts to reverse the trends that began in 1988. But to those familiar with the recent history of Lithuania, the election results had no such ominous implications. They merely reflected the growing sophistication of the voters and their reliance on democratic institutions to settle political differences and to redirect as well as to reaffirm economic, social and political reforms. It was the case of a young democracy coming into its own. As in other former republics of the Soviet Union, democratization in Lithuania had to overcome numerous obsta- cles—the most visible ones being the absence of democratic political culture, relentless pressure from Moscow and the resultant siege-like atmosphere, and the rapidly deteriorating economic conditions. One of the important forces that helped to preserve fledgling democratic institutions was the Communist Party of Lithuania (Lietuvos Komunistų Partija—LKP) and its successor, Lithuania's Democratic Labor Party. Without their early commitment, the struggle for democracy and indepen- dence in Lithuania would have been much more difficult. The meaning of the 1992 elections, therefore, can only be fully evaluated and understood in the context of the party's role in promoting change, a role that originated six years ago. -

A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972 Amanda Jeanne Swain A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2013 Reading Committee: Glennys Young, Chair James Felak Guntis Smidchens Program Authorized to Offer Degree: History © Copyright 2013 Amanda Jeanne Swain University of Washington Abstract A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972 Amanda Jeanne Swain Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Professor Glennys Young History “A Death Transformed: The Political and Social Consequences of Romas Kalanta’s Self- Immolation, Soviet Lithuania, 1972” explores Soviet and post-Soviet interpretive narratives and political practices in response to two days of street demonstrations that followed the 1972 suicide of a nineteen-year-old man in Soviet Lithuania. My analysis reveals that Communist authorities and participating youth viewed the demonstrations as a struggle over the acceptable boundaries and content of modern Soviet youth culture. Despite extensive evidence that by 1972 youth were actively negotiating the boundaries of what were acceptable activities, Communist authorities and young people operated within an ideological framework that denied young people’s capacity to express discontent with the Soviet system. In post-Communist Lithuania, social and political elites constructed narratives of May 1972 that reclaimed agency by representing the demonstrations alternatively as nationalist dissent, civil resistance or Sixties-style youth protest. The diversity of narratives reflected on-going debates about the nature of post-Communist Lithuanian identity. This work seeks to make significant contributions to the historiography of the Soviet Union and to scholarship on the politics of memory and European integration. -

Lithuania: A Problem of Disclosure TOMAS SKUCAS s centripetal forces spun the Soviet Union out of control and, ultimately, out A of existence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, an unlikely country became the vanguard of those USSR states seeking independence. Through political maneuverings and public demonstrations, Lithuania gained independence and resisted the half-hearted attempts of the Soviet Union to prevent the secession of its Eastern European satellites. Since then, Lithuania has struggled with its Soviet-era demons. Like the rest of the former Soviet Union, Lithuania had been controlled by the KGB and its predecessors. The KGB’s historic power, and its pervasive influence on Lithuan- ian society (which persists even today), has been a defining feature of the coun- try’s tortured path toward democracy. The First Soviet Occupation Following the collapse of the Russian and German empires in 1918, Lithuania finally was able to assert its statehood. On February 16, 1918, Lithuania declared its full independence. However, a mere two years later, Lithuania’s capital and province of Vilnius was annexed and subsequently controlled by Poland until World War II. Following the onset of the war, specifically the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact by Iosif Stalin and Adolph Hitler in August 1939, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia were forced to accept Soviet occupation. In October 1939, Soviet troops arrived on Lithuanian soil. The following May, the Soviet Union delivered a note to the Lithuanian government accusing it of complicity in the kidnapping of two Soviet soldiers. Through these and similar instruments of intimidation, the Soviets forced the creation of a new government led by the Soviet Deputy Commissar for Foreign Affairs and a quasi-elected Peo- ple’s Diet. -
