From the Back Cover "One of the most intelligent, erudite, and comic writers working today. In their place, Tichy finds sadomasochistic robots who speak a dialect much like Chaucerian English, killer potatoes with an appetite for spacecraft, and robot theologians who are being relentlessly persecuted by creators who have renounced their original faith. Full of the intellectual satire for which Stanislaw Lem is esteemed, The Star Diaries speaks volumes about contemporary society in its depiction of highly bizarre, faraway, futuristic worlds. Winner of the Kafka Prize, he is a contributor to many magazines, including the New Yorker, and he is the author of numerous works, including Solaris. No customer reviews. How are ratings calculated? Set aside the multiplicity of definitions Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy religion and religiosity and settle on this. Religious thought is the logical process of reasoning in light of an incomplete informational data set. What is the source of our feeling of self- awareness or just plain self? Why is there an apparent order to the universe? They just cover different domains. But technology throws a whole bunch of new stuff into the mix. Turns out that for a while, many years in the planets past, there were arguments and Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy out-breaks over religious belief. And every time one side looked like it was winning, some technological advance would give the advantage to the other. The friars realized that the problem, Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy its base, was not solvable. But also, they realized, that based on the construct of physical beings, chemical or other physical manipulations were always possible. You could take a pill that would make you a devout catholic or another pill that would make you an atheist. But the friars refused to pull the trigger. What an incredible story! I'm a big Heinlein and PKD fan for reference. This book is quite simply truly magnificent. However, this book also heads well into intellectualism amidst magnificently farcical elements and simply divine wordplay. I can't imagine the difficulty of translating something, and keeping it funny in the 2nd language. The translator has done an amazing job. The vocabulary in this guy's translations is worthy of a Harvard Coffee Shop in The intellectual aspects of these stories are truly wondrous, with historical references that, upon research, end up being well grounded and truly surprising. Wikipedia agrees! This book does have multiple sections that are, at the same time philosophically brilliant AND like wading through wet concrete The only caveat I have is one of the greatest things about this book It is written at a level that probably requires an intellectual reader with a great vocabulary Contrast that with most sci-fi that Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy be read pretty well at a 5th grade level. But, otherwise Call it graduate level Hitchhiker's Guide Call it sciencey Vonnegut. If this review spoke to you and your tastes, you owe it to yourself to check it out. From my own experience, Lem's books are all over the place But, all do seem to contain very interesting philosophy and consideration of the human spirit on a quite high level. I'll be continuing my way through his catalog If you are a fan of synthy-pop music, a perfect companion for this book is the music album "Rings Around The World" by Super Furry Animals. One person found this helpful. Lem is one of the most original, creative, wickedly funny, irresistibly charming storytellers ever to grace science fiction. The Star Diaries was rightly considered to Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy an instant classic and it has stood the test of time. I have read a lot of sci-fi in my life, and I consider this to be one of my all-time favorites. Nobody does it like Lem does it, and nobody who purchases this book will be disappointed when they read it. If I had to pick a short list of books to take along with me to a desert island, this book would certainly be among them. This is my first Stanistaw Lem book, and except for one chapter that was unduly long I found it enjoyable. Each chapter is pretty much independent of another, so in effect it's a collection of short stories about the same space traveler character, apparently written over a long period of time but in a very consistent style. For those familiar with Vonnegut's fictitious author Kilgore Trout, the writing style is very reminiscent of him, and the book Venus on the Halfshell purportedly written by him but actually written by Farmer. That is the style of this science fiction. Go to Amazon. Discover the best of shopping and entertainment with Amazon Prime. I will put this bluntly: I am highly aware that the English speaking world generally neglects the literature of the rest of the world, which is the idea behind the Reading the World challenge to begin with. I am also aware that among the world literature that does gain some fame, the Eastern block is not in focus. Because Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy book is brilliant in its writing, ideas Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy sense of humor, achieved through satire. I read it in Michael Kandel's translation, my Polish not being great as of yet though I consider myself a good studentand I thought the writing was beautiful. I can only begin to imagine how lovely Lem's original expressions are, because translations, no matter how good, always take away something from the original. The language, overall, was very rich, changing between styles, even using a made up version of old and new language, in the Polish version, I assume, Polish, but also, and much credit to Kandel, of course, in the English version, a sensational mix of old and new English that I had some trouble with, but that only attests to it's greatness, because it used expressions long out of use. I am generally not a fan of satire, but this book was fantastic in that sense. The humor, so gentle and subtle and yet obviously there, was amazing. I usually put some berth between myself and humorous books, but I do not regret a second of reading The Star Diaries. Which brings me to the moment I will acquaint you with the book itself: The Star Diaries tells the story of Ijon Tichywho Star Diaries: Further Reminiscences of Ijon Tichy from one planet to another and gets in all kinds of strange and comic situations.

  • Introduction to "Solaris" Translated from Polish by Lech Keller Stanislaw Lem Is Unquestionably One of the Greatest Authors of SF in the Global History of This Genre
Acta Polonica Monashiensis Volume 2 Number 2 December 2002 Wojciech Kajtoch Introduction to "Solaris" Translated from Polish by Lech Keller Stanislaw Lem is unquestionably one of the greatest authors of SF in the global history of this genre. Thus inclusion of his works to the reading list1 is certainly a gesture, which acknowledges the reality. One could also regard this inclusion as an ennoblement of a genre, so far virtually ignored by the school administration because of its "lowly" origin (i.e. Verne's fantastic novels, targeted mostly for young people, and American "pulp" SF magazines of the 1930s). There are also different claims, namely that "Solaris" (and this novel is virtually unanimously regarded as the best work of Lem, the work, which introduced his works to the list of "must-read" books), is not really SF. The main reason is that "Solaris" can be read and interpreted as a psychological novel, thus in this context Lem is a "real", i.e. "mainstream" writer, actually not much interested in science and technology. In short: Lem is strictly speaking a "high brow" writer, rather than a "lowly" SF writer. It should be also noted the lack of regard to the cultural background (or its arbitrary selection), which was frequent in the interpretation of the post-Second World War literature, and common in the Polish secondary schools habit of reading every literary text as a direct reflection and appraisal of the real world. This way we have compiled a catalogue of the dangers threatening analysis of "Solaris', as it is done at the classes of Polish literature.

Synchrotron Radiation in Natural Science Vol. 12, No. 1 – 2 (2013) Pb1-xSnxSe topological crystalline insulator: a new kind of quantum material A synchrotron-based Polish-Swedish collaboration results in experimental evidences for recent theoretical predictions experiment both the open-gap topologically trivial case (Fig. 2a) and open-inverted-gap with topologically nontrivial properties (Fig. 2b). In the ARPES studies carried out for crystals with Sn composition of x=0.23 in the synchrotron laboratory MAX-lab, Lund, Sweden and in the photoelectron spectroscopy laboratory of KTH, Kista, Sweden the band inversion was achieved at TC = 150 K. Below the inversion temperature one observed the formation of topological states with Dirac-like energy dispersion and Figure 1. A monocrystal of Pb0.77Sn0.23Se obtained by the Dirac cone centered in the vicinity of the X point of the self-selecting vapour growth method. the surface Brillouin zone [3]. Thus, the presence of the gapless Dirac-like states on the surface of Pb1-xSnxSe The existence of topologically protected surface proved that this narrow-gap semiconducting solid states with the Dirac-like dispersion on the (100) surface solution belongs to the new class of TCI. of Pb1-xSnxSe monocrystals has been recently proven by the angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments [1]. The discovery of new quantum materials – topological insulators (TI) (one of the most important recent developments in condensed-matter physics) showed that time-reversal symmetry and strong relativistic (spin-orbit) effects led to presence of metallic helical Dirac-like electronic states on surfaces of some particular crystals, like Bi2Te3 or Bi2Se3.The further theoretical developments in analysis of conditions necessary for occurrence of particular properties characteristic of TI led to widening the class of suitable materials by topological crystalline insulators (TCI), in which specific crystalline symmetries warrant the topological protection of metallic surface states [2,3].

Reviews of Books 113 Emerging from Its Elements: Solaris across Media. Mark Bould. Solaris. BFI Film Classics. Palgrave McMillan: London, 2014. 96 pp. ISBN: 978-1-84- 457805-4. $17.95 pbk. Reviewed by Melody Jue When you walk into an aquarium, you are usually greeted by signs that welcome you to the “alien” realm of the ocean, with its “extraterrestrial” creatures, like the octopus and nautilus. One of the curious things about the ocean planet Solaris—as imagined by Stanislaw Lem and Andrei Tarkovsky—is that it has no indigenous life forms. In both Lem’s 1961 novel and Tarkovsky’s 1972 film, the planet Solaris is one massive ocean body of transient sculptural formations, perhaps sentient on a scale beyond human comprehension. The planet is at once an environment and a subject, presenting particular challenges for thinking about cinematic perception and the genre of sf. Mark Bould’s study of Tarkovsky’s Solaris is a new contribution to BFI’s Film Classics series that engages with the interrelation of environment and subjectivity. Although the book is organized into three chapters (“Sf, Tarkovsky and Lem,” “Solarises,” and “Tarkovsky’s Solaris”), the last chapter on Tarkovsky’s film comprises the majority of the book. Bould carefully recounts the plot of the film, occasionally splicing in forays into production history, literary and cinematic precedents, and full-color film frames. Bould’s Solaris is, in many ways, not simply a study of Tarkovsky’s Solaris, but an additional remediation of the film and novel that stands on its own. What emerges from Bould’s prudent analysis is an environmental sensibility: that the key to interpreting Solaris lies in a cinematic grammar that emerges out of its natural elements.
