Xinglin Institute Shanghan lun Studies Curriculum Stephen Boyanton Last Update: 6/2014 The Xinglin Institute Shanghan lun curriculum is designed to give students a solid foundation in the clinical application of the Shanghan lun (Treatise on Cold Damage 傷寒論), arguably the single most important text in Chinese herbal medicine. The curriculum is designed in the belief that the traditional method of studying the Shanghan lun remains the most effective. Participants are guided through the text line by line, resolving the many difficulties the text presents to a reader, examining the major disagreements over the meaning of the lines, and striving to understand the clinical application of this important text in detail. The goal of this immersive method of studying the Shanghan lun is to help the participants develop a deep personal relationship with the text. It is this relationship which allows skilled clinicians to continue developing throughout their careers and supports their decision-making in the clinics. The curriculum is composed of seventeen 3-hour sessions for a total of 51 hours of class-time. Although these classes are offered independently, it is strongly recommended that participants take the classes in the core program in order. For those familiar with older versions of this curriculum, the formula intensive classes have been moved to a separate curriculum devoted to Classical Formula Studies, which will be offered after the curriculum on the Jingui yaolue (Essentials of the Golden Coffer 金匱要略), the sister-text of the Shanghan lun.
