Throughout his career Paul has worked at the Natural History Museum, London which he joined soon after completing post-doctoral studies in Swansea which in turn followed his completion of a PhD in Durham. Paul’s research interests are polymatic within the sphere of bryozoology – he has studied fossil bryozoans from all of the geological periods, and modern bryozoans from all oceanic basins. His interests include taxonomy, biodiversity, skeletal structure, ecology, evolution, history to name a few subject areas; in fact there are probably none in bryozoology that have not been the subject of his many publications. His office in the Natural History Museum quickly became a magnet for visiting bryozoological colleagues whom he always welcomed: he has always been highly encouraging of the research efforts of others, quick to collaborate, and generous with advice and information. Middle Permian Brachiopods from Setamai, the Type Locality of The

E(Geology), No. 16, 1-33, 2001 Middle Permian brachiopods from Setamai,the type locality of the Kanokura Formation,southern Kitakami Mountains, northeast Japan Jun-ichi TAZAWA* and Yosuke IBARAKI** Abstract A Middle Permian (Kubergandian-Murgabian) brachiopod fauna is described from the type section of the lower Kanokura Formation in the Setamai area, southern Kitakami Moun tains, northeast Japan. This fauna contains the following nine species: Transennatia gratiosa, Tyloplecta cf. yangzeensis, Waagenoconcha sp., Linoproductus cora, Cancrinella sp., Leptodus nobilis, Derbyia grandis, Derbyia nipponica and Spiriferella keilhavii. The Setamai fauna is characterized by the mixuture of both the Boreal and Tethyan elements. Key words: Boreal-Tethyan mixed fauna, brachiopods. Middle Permian, Setamai, southern Kitakami Mountains. Introduction The Permian brachiopod specimens described in this paper were collected by the authors and late Prof. M. Minato of Hokkaido University from nine localities in the Kanokurasawa and Kacchizawa valleys in the Setamai area, the type locahty of the lower part of the Kanokura Formation, southern Kitakami Mountains, northeast Japan (Figs. 1,2). The Middle Permian Kanokura Formation was named by Onuki (1937) as the Kanokura Stage, but Onuki (1956)later changed the name to 'formation' with the outcrops along the Kanokurasawa valley as its type section. The stratigraphy of the Kanokura Formation in the Setamai area was described and discussed in detail by Minato et al.(1954,1978,1979), Onuki (1956, 1969), Murata (1964), Saito (1966, 1968) and Choi (1973, 1976). Subcommission on Devonian Stratigraphy Newsletter No. 21 April, 2005 MESSAGE FROM THE NEW CHAIRMAN Dear SDS Members: This new Newsletter gives me the pleasant opportunity to thank you for your confidence which should allow me to lead our Devonian Subcommission successfully through the next four years until the next International Geological Congress in Norway. Ahmed El Hassani, as Vice-Chairman, and John Marshall, as our new Secretary, will assist and help me. As it has been our habit in the past, our outgoing chairman, Pierre Bultynck, has continued his duties until the end of the calendar year, and in the name of all the Subcommission, I like to express our warmest thanks to him for all his efforts, his enthusi- asm for our tasks, his patience with the often too slow progress of research, and for the humorous, well organized and skil- ful handling of our affairs, including our annual meetings. At the same time I like to thank all our outgoing Titular Members for their partly long-time service and I express my hope that they will continue their SDS work with the same interest and energy as Corresponding Members. The new ICS rules require a rather constant change of voting members and the change from TM to CM status should not necessarily be taken as an excuse to adopt the lifestyle of a “Devonian pensioner”. I see no reason why constantly active SDS members shouldn´t become TM again, at a later stage. On the other side, the rather strong exchange of voting members should bring in some fresh ideas and some shift towards modern stratigraphical tech- niques. -

THE WRISTEN OF THE PERMIAN BASIN: EFFECT OF TECTONICS ON PATTERNS OF DEPOSITION, DIAGENESIS, AND RESERVOIR DEVELOPMENT IN THE LATE SILURIAN Stephen C. Ruppel Bureau of Economic Geology Jackson School of Geosciences The University of Texas at Austin Austin, Texas ABSTRACT Rocks of the Upper Silurian Wristen Group display a range in facies and depositional style that contrasts markedly with the more homogeneous character of the underlying Middle to Lower Silurian Fusselman Formation. The Wristen contains distinct (1) shallow-water platform (Fasken Formation) and (2) deeper water, outer platform to slope carbonate facies (Frame and Wink Formations) that document crustal downwarping of the southern margin of the Laurentian paleocontinent during the Middle Silurian. Deeper water facies of the Frame and Wink Formations dominate the more southerly areas of the Wristen subcrop in the Permian Basin and consist of nodular mudstones and wackestones (Wink) and carbonate debris flows and shales (Frame). Wristen platform facies are assigned to the Fasken Formation and include platform-margin carbonate buildup successions and a complex variety of middle to inner platform facies ranging from small carbonate buildup facies to skeletal wackestones and packstones to tidal-flat complexes. Hydrocarbon reservoirs are restricted to the Fasken Formation; more than 1.2 billion barrels of oil has been produced. A large volume of oil (more than 1.8 billion barrels) remains as a target for improved characterization of reservoir facies and architecture. The models and data presented here provide an important basis for better understanding of this complex depositional system. 1 INTRODUCTION The Silurian of the Permian Basin constitutes a thick section (as much as 2,000 ft) of carbonate platform, platform-margin, and slope rocks. -

Graham Heaslip State University College at Cortland Cortland, New York It i s particularly appropriate that we examine the Ithaca Formation in the Cortland area during the Golden Anniversary Meeting of the New York State Geological Association. The rocks of this region are of con siderable historical interest, having received attention since the earli est days of geolog ical investigation in New York State . In fact, the presence of fossil shells in the Devonian rocks of New York was first noted in 1751 at a hillside outcrop in Cortland County by John Bartram, a member of the Lewis Evans Onondaga expedition (We lls, 1963). The New York Devonian is unique in its completeness, fossil content. numerous outcrops, and relatively undisturbed nature. It is the standard reference section for North America and displays a classic example of facies transition. Stratigraphic and paleontologic investigation over the past century has produced a wealth of infonnation, but uDespite this, perhaps another century of rigorous study wi ll be required before a thor ough understanding of its paleontology, lithology, stratigraphy and paleoecology can be attained. n (Rickard. 1964). The early stratigraphic work in the Upper Devonian of New York was done mainly by James Hall. J. M. Clarke. and H. S. Williams between 1840 and 1915 . These workers subdivided the succession, described the faunas and attempted to correlate along the strike. Due to comp l ex interfinger ing of the argillaceous western sequence with the thicker arenaceous eastern sequence, correlations proved difficult. -
