ABOUT THE ALUMNI REPORT

NACE STANDARDS EXPLAINED

High Point University began using the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) standards and protocols for reporting outcomes of recent alumni with the 2014 undergraduate graduating class. The NACE protocols were established because, although most schools routinely collect, analyze, and report alumni data, they do so in significantly different ways. Because these methodological inconsistencies make it difficult to compare results across institutions, the NACE protocols were developed to level the playing field.

One of the prominent standards created by NACE involves the method of obtaining information from alumni surveys, departmental information, marketing department articles, Office of Career and Professional Development records, social media platforms, and any other form of data that may have been collected (formally or informally) to create an institution’s dataset for that graduating class. Basically, if an institution knows that a graduate has a “destination,” the institution can use that information regardless of where it was found. NACE refers to this as the “knowledge rate,” or the number of graduates for which an institution has some form of first destination data, divided by the total number of graduates. HPU uses all available data sources to determine its final knowledge rate.

During the 2014-2015 academic year, HPU adopted the NACE protocols to establish a baseline for data collection and reporting practices moving forward and we have reported our findings to NACE starting with the class of 2015 data. The final NACE report releases in September of each year. Past NACE reports can be found here.

IMPORTANT TERMS TO KNOW

Knowledge Rate: The overall knowledge rate is the number of graduates for which an institution has some form of first destination data, divided by the total number of graduates. The knowledge rates for individual colleges, schools, or departments are based on the number of students with first destination data that graduated with a major in a particular college, school, or department, even if it was a second major.

Career Outcome Percentage: This percentage takes the number of graduates that have an outcome (excluding seeking/not seeking categories) divided by the number we have data on (all categories including seeking/not seeking). This percentage is the overall number we use in publications to show how many students reached a first destination activity.

NACE: This acronym stands for the National Association of Colleges and Employers. The NACE website can be found here.

First Destination Data: All the data provided in this report comprise placement or outcome information collected via surveys, departmental outreach, calls to alumni, and other data collection initiatives on campus. All these data were combined to paint an overall picture of what HPU students are doing within six months of graduation.

HPU REPORTING PRACTICES

In the summer of 2016, the Alumni Data Team, which consists of several representatives from offices across campus, met to discuss the timeline of events for data collection and reporting of class of 2016 findings. Below is the timeline that guided the team’s efforts.

Occasionally, adjustments were made or additional strategies were implemented as specific needs arose. Particularly, the final alumni report was not published until late in the fall 2017 semester because NACE did not release their findings until mid-fall. Otherwise, the schedule only had minor changes.

As with any new process, it can take time for all offices, departments and areas to be aware of and able to participate fully in a new initiative. However, this year’s data collection went extremely well, based on the significant increase in our knowledge rate. We also now know we have some more work to do with communicating as we had a few areas that did not realize their data needed to be sent to us. The Alumni Data Team met in summer of 2017 to discuss additional strategies for assisting other offices in meeting our projected deadlines for the fall. For more details, see the section on Future Plans.

NACE FIRST DESTINATION GROUPINGS

The comparison data in the NACE report provides schools the opportunity to see how their alumni findings compare to their region, control structure, Carnegie classification, size of school, and academic discipline/majors. These groupings are defined in detail in the NACE Report. Below is where falls within each grouping. The definitions are from the NACE report. Later in this report, we display the NACE data that was reported and then show how HPU compares to each of these groupings.

HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY’S GROUP NACE GROUPING CLASSIFICATION Southeast – , West Virginia, , South Carolina, , Florida, Alabama, Region Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and Louisiana

Control Structure Private, Not-for-profit

Master’s – Institutions that awarded at least 50 Carnegie Classification - Basic master’s degrees and fewer than 20 doctoral degrees during this year Medium – Total enrollment of greater than 3,000 School Size but less than or equal to 10,000 Not included in this report. HPU findings by Academic Discipline academic discipline were reported separately to each dean and department chair.

IMPACT SUMMARY

Note: The following analysis was conducted on the bachelor’s degree level since there is more variation in the types of outcomes for these alumni.

Overall, High Point University outcome data was significantly higher than the NACE standards in most areas. For some areas, like full-time standard employment, we were as much as 12.7 points higher than the NACE data. One particularly interesting area to note is NACE had a much higher seeking/not seeking category than HPU (up by about 11 points), which means that HPU has more alumni that fall within a first destination placement than what NACE has demonstrated. This positive impact is especially telling because it shows that our students reach more outcomes of substance within six months of graduation compared to the standard. Furthermore, the fact that High Point University’s knowledge rate was 21.9 points above the NACE standard supports the effectiveness of the university’s data collection strategies.

Bachelor’s Outcomes NACE HPU GAP IMPACT* Knowledge Rate 64.6% 86.5% +21.9 Career Outcomes Percentage 83.7% 94.9% +11.2 Percent Standard Employment 58.9% 68.7% +9.8 Overall • Percent Employed Full-Time 54.1% 66.8% +12.7 • Percent Employed Part-Time 4.8% 1.9% -2.9 Percent Post-Grad 2.0% 3.3% +1.3 Fellowship/Internship Percent Volunteer Service 1.0% 0.1% -0.9 Percent Military 0.8% 0.3% -0.5 Percent Continuing Education 17.7% 18.6% +0.9 Percent Entrepreneur 1.0% 1.4% +0.4 Percent Other: Contract/ 2.5% 2.6% +0.1 Temporary/Freelance Percent Seeking Employment 11.1% 4.1% -7.0 Percent Seeking Continuing 3.2% 1.0% -2.2 Education Percent Not Seeking/Not Engaged 1.9% 0.0% -1.9

*The UP arrow shows when HPU was higher or had a more positive outcome than NACE. The HORIZONTAL arrow means there was less than 1.0 difference, but HPU was lower than NACE. The DOWN arrow indicates that HPU’s number was lower than NACE findings by more than 1.0 point.

SUMMARY

FUTURE PLANS

This alumni report has adapted to the needs of the university, data collection methods, and reporting changes by NACE in the past few years. While the results for this year’s report benefitted from the collection of more data than last year (having a higher knowledge rate than last year), our next step is to ensure all departments and areas of the university continue to collect and share their findings with our office.

SENDING SURVEY SOONER

While our reporting for this class was adapted to meet the needs of university administrators and became more routine for the receivers of this information (mainly deans and department chairs), we do plan to change the timing of our Alumni Update Form being sent to the class of 2017 graduates. In an effort to get more responses, we plan to send this survey to undergraduate and graduate students during the week of graduation. By having these students still on-campus, we hope to increase our knowledge rate and have more of them respond to the survey which has more items than just outcome information.

Additionally, as mentioned above, we are continuing to send to graduate students so we can continue to report their outcomes and compare back to NACE. This process of sending to graduate students for the class of 2017 will remain consistent with the class of 2016 data in this report. If NACE makes changes to their processes, we will implement for the next class.
