Geography Location

Land and Agriculture

Low lying land area and steep slopes approximately 400m2 use for gardening and farming. People on Mataso Island repeatedly use the same land for cultivation and farming for decades. Main root crops are cassava and taro includes banana and vegetables. People on Mataso island also frequently rely on imported food to support their local produces

Feeder Roads

Feeder roads are cover with debris transported from rough sea swells and hurricane wind force. Community has clear the feeder roads and is now accessible.

Water Situation Overview

Main water source are; fibreglass water tanks, underground well and hand pump. Mataso Island currently have insufficient water supply, due that water sources are damaged and contaminated after TC PAM aftermath.

Health and Education

Mataso Primary School is completely destroyed by severe TC PAM. Desk and Chairs are damaged including other school resources are also damaged.

Mataso Aid Post building is completely destroyed including all medical supplies.

FINDINGS

1. Naasang Village

Population 111 people Death 3 Injuries / Hospitalise 12 Households Total of 37 households. All houses includes kitchens were destroyed and cover debris transported hurricane force winds and rough sea swells. Infrastructure Feeder road are cover with debris transported by hurricane winds and rough sea swells.

Safe House The only evacuation centre build by the French Government back in 1980s has (Evacuation Centre) been destroyed. There is no evacuation centre in Mataso, people in the island of Mataso used stone cave to hide children and older women, while men and

women have no place to hide and stayed outside during the long period of severe tropical . Community Building - Primary School is completely destroyed. Water Source There are 3 water tanks 1100 Lt each was half full and water from the tanks can only be use within a week due that water is contaminated. 1 hand pump, water contaminated and not good for use. Community is in immediate need for water assistance. Cleanliness & Bus toilets are damaged. No hand washing soap. Hygiene Agriculture Root Every crop including their main root crop – wild yam and other agricultural crop crops & Animals were destroyed including fruit trees by severer tropical cyclone PAM wind force. Recorded 2 death cattle’s during the tropical cyclone PAM. Communication There is no mean of communication; both digicel and TVL tower are completely destroyed in the island. Radio outlets is still not reachable since TC PAM.

Recommendations:

1. An estimate 95% of water sources in Mataso Island are damaged and contaminated. Immediate water assistance is requires for the island, include water rehabilitation for underground well and hand pump.

2. Aid Post completely damaged. Need for Iron roof and other building materials to construct the building, for the safe keeping of medical supplies. Medical supplies are also damaged, need for immediate health aid.

3. Agriculture root crop (Food) is completely destroyed. Remains can only sustain the community for less than 2 weeks. Therefore immediate need for food supplies is require for the island.

4. Primary School building and school resources are completely destroyed. Immediate assistance for iron roof and other building materials is require for repair and maintenance of the school building in order to allow school to continue its normal programs.

5. Total of 37 household totally destroyed, can NDMO supplies 10 sheets of iron roof each to the 37 households to rebuild their homes. It is recommended that should provide bush materials from the mainland of Emae to help people on Mataso Island to rebuild their homes.
