  • The Love of John Lennon's Life - and It Wasn't Cynthia Or Yoko
The Love Of John Lennon's Life - And It Wasn't Cynthia or Yoko Written by Andy Owen It was January 12th 1964. The Beatles were rehearsing at the London Palladium for their appearance that evening, on the top TV show, Val Parnell's Sunday Night at the London Palladium. They had first appeared on the show on October 13th 1963. But, only three months on from that debut, a massive change had taken place. Their profile had gone supersonic in that short time - as the scenes outside the theatre had shown. 'Beatlemania' was in full swing. Argyll Street was wall-to-wall with noisy Beatles fans from early morning. And they stayed there all day... 1 Their incredible popularity was also reflected in their fee for that performance - which had risen from £250 to £1,000. The Beatles topped the bill, which was broadcast at prime time, from 8.25pm to 9.25pm. Sunday Night At The London Palladium was an ATV show and attracted enormous viewing figures in the UK. The show was compèred by Bruce Forsyth - and all the acts appeared live. After doing a short skit with Bruce Forsyth earlier, the group closed the show with a five-song set - I Want to Hold You Hand, This Boy, All My Loving, Money and Twist and Shout. Also on the bill that night, were singer Alma Cogan and comedian Dave Allen. This was the first time The Beatles had met Alma Cogan. Alma was a big star in her own right and extremely popular. She was called the "Girl with the Giggle in Her Voice" and she had been the highest paid British female entertainer of her era.

  • 'Imagine There's No Heaven': John Lennon, Atheism and the Possibility of Public Theology
‘IMAGINE THERE’S NO HEAVEN’: JOHN LENNON, ATHEISM AND THE POSSIBILITY OF PUBLIC THEOLOGY Since the advent of global communication there have been a number of events which have metaphorically „stopped the world‟. Unexpected, sudden, shocking, perhaps outrageous, they have had the effect, not only of preoccupying news editors and opinion formers for months and even years thereafter, but of momentarily disorientating all of us as onlookers, of giving us a sense that the world has shifted a little on its axis and will never be quite the same again. Whether of natural or human causation, these are the events which, according to the cliché, we never forget where we were when we first heard of them. In recent times we would include 9/11 and the Boxing Day tsunami; in the slightly more distant past, the death of Princess Diana; and in the experience of those of more mature years, the death of Elvis Presley, the Warsaw Pact invasion of Prague and, most famously of all, the assassination of President John F Kennedy. And into this category, I suggest, would also come the shooting of John Lennon, 30 years ago this coming December. Lennon‟s death impacted upon us, not simply because it was so „out of the blue‟, so senseless, so brazen, but because it removed in an instant a person who had seemed, both in his heyday with the Beatles and subsequently as an activist, peace campaigner and independent musician, to personify the hopes which many entertained in the 1960s and early 1970s of an end to costly and futile conflicts like Vietnam, and the possibility of a new social order.

  • Some Time in New York City«
The Lives, Loves and Deaths of the Greatest Rock Star‹ trägt.

  • Feminism GCSE, a Level– Social Studies, History
G Parry-Paxton Feminism GCSE, A Level– Social Studies, History Did men and women enjoy equal status in the 1950s? Women did not have the vote until 1918 but they had to be over 30 to be eligible. There was still an idea within society that women were in need of protection and that they would struggle to make financial and po- litical choices. In 1928 they were able to vote on equal terms with men. This means that in the 1950s, women had only had equal voting rights for 30 years. Women were admitted into medicine, the legal profession and the teaching profession but they were not valued equally compared to their male colleagues. In 1956, it was necessary to pass a law to state that employers must pay male and female teachers and civil servants the same wage for the same job. After marriage most women still followed the accepted path of leaving work and staying at home to raise children. Cynthia Lennon stayed at home to raise Julian whilst John Lennon worked away. Mona Best Alice Mona Shaw was born on 3 January 1924, in Delhi, India. Her father was an army officer – at this time India was a British colony and as such was governed by a British Viceroy who was supported by the British led Indian army. The status of Mona’s father, Major Thomas Shaw, would have led to a comfortable existence for the Shaw family. Mona would have been expected to marry within her social class and to devote her adult life to child rearing, running her household and charitable concerns.

  • Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of the Beatles
MOVIES ABOUT THE BEATLES Early Beatles History: 1940-1964 Birth of The Beatles In 1978, Elvis – The Movie premiered on American television. The pro- duction was a dramatization of Elvis Presley’s life, featuring Kurt Rus- sell as Elvis. His unexpected death the year before had revived the public interest in ‘The King,’ and countless biographies invaded the market. The movie spawned several fictional and/or biographical films about po- pular culture icons, such as Buddy Holly (The Buddy Holly Story, 1978) and The Beatles (Birth of The Beatles, 1979). In the 1980s and 1990s, only a handful of pop biographies were successful at the box office, i. e. Luis Valdez’ La Bamba (1987) about Richie Valens, Oliver Stone’s The Doors (1991) and Iain Softley’s Backbeat (1993). More recently, Holly- wood has produced a string of highly successful TV and cinema biogra- phies of musical heroes. The most notable films and series are The Rat Pack (1998) about the lives and times of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr., Ray (2004) about Ray Charles, Stoned (2005) about The Rolling Stones’ Brian Jones, and – again – Elvis (2005). Starting with Birth of The Beatles, The Beatles’ history has been dramatized in various forms for television as well as for the cinema. While The Beat- les’ early group history has been dealt with in Birth of The Beatles (1979), Backbeat (1993), and In His Life: The John Lennon Story (2000), John Lennon’s private life was explored in John and Yoko: A Love Story (1985) and The Hours and Times (1991).

LET ME TAKE YOU DOWN IN A CYN SANDWICH: The Profoundly Paradoxical Mind of John Lennon Brian Murphy Whenever a noble soul comes, the audience awaits. And he is not judged by his performance, but by the spirit of his performance. —Emerson [Journals, Dover, p.206] An essay-review of the following books: Cynthia Lennon, A Twist of Lennon (New York: Avon Books, 1978). Frederic Seaman, The Last Days of John Lennon: A Personal Memoir (New York: Birch Lane Press, 1991). Robert Rosen, Nowhere Man: The Final Days of John Lennon (Soft Skull Press, 2001). Cynthia Lennon, John (London: Hodder & Stoughton, 2005). 101 I: Introduction On December 8, 1980, John Lennon was assassinated. So stated, this event was surely something new under the sun, a genuine first: a popular entertainer, a singer-song-writer, a mere celebrity was not only murdered but “assassinated”—a word whose associations evoke kings, archdukes, historical per sonages, heads of states, presidents, historical demarcations, Lincoln, King, Kennedy. It had been foreseen: in Hair, that astonishingly evoca tive mirror of The Sixties, the line comes with a shock, out of nowhere, “Mick! They shot Mick.” The tribe felt that the dark forces that killed the Kennedys and King would spill over, almost inevitably, to the brightness of the counter culture. They picked the wrong singer, but the fear was not misplaced.
