Garrett, Chair Professor Gary B. Holland Professor Martin Schwartz Spring 2015 Abstract Studies in Iranian Dialectology and Dialectometry by Chundra Aroor Cathcart Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics University of California, Berkeley Professor Andrew Garrett, Chair This dissertation investigates the forces at work in the formation of a tightly knit but ultimately non-genetic dialect group. The Iranian languages, a genetic sub-branch of the larger Indo-European language family, are a group whose development has been profoundly affected by millennia of internal contact. This work is concerned with aspects of the diversification and disparification (i.e., the development of different versus near-identical features across languages) of this group of languages, namely issues pertaining to the development of the so-called West Iranian group, whose status as a legitimate genetic subgroup has long remained unclear. To address the phenomena under study, I combine a traditional comparative-historical approach with existing quantitative methods as well as newly developed quantitative methods designed to deal with the sort of linguistic situation that Iranian typifies. The studies I undertake support the idea that West Iranian is not a genetic subgroup, as sometimes assumed; instead, similarities between West Iranian languages that give the impression of close genetic relatedness have come about due to interactions between contact and parallel driftlike tendencies.

International Journal of Eurasian Linguistics 1 (2019) 237–248 JEAL brill.com/jeal Farewell to Claus Schönig Elisabetta Ragagnin Berlin, Germany/Venice, Italy Prof. Dr. Claus Schönig 23.10.1955–23.6.2019 On June 23, Claus Schönig closed his eyes forever. He was taken away all too early at the young age of 63 by a devastating illness. He died in his home in Mainz, his nutag, the place he loved more than any other place on Earth. The world has lost a great Turcologist, a precious friend to many of us, and a fan- tastic teacher. We will all remember his charismatic character, and his special, deliciously noir, sense of humour. He could preserve these qualities even in the difficult last years of his life, especially thanks to the indefatigable cares of his wife Ursel. © Koninklijke Brill NV, Leiden, 2020 | doi:10.1163/25898833-12340015 238 Ragagnin Claus was born on October 23, 1955 in Mainz, son of the forwarding mer- chant Rudolf Schönig and his wife Apollonia. In 1974, after finishing the state Gutenberg-Gymnasium, he enrolled at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz as a student of mathematics. However, after a break in order to serve in the military, he completely changed his direction of studies: he first switched into Islamic Studies and—as Claus himself used to tell with affection— after getting acquainted with Professor Johannes Benzing, into linguistic Gesamtturkologie which at that time also included the study of Mongolic, Tungusic and Paleosiberian languages. His minors were Islamic philology, encompassing Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and Islamic studies.

Dialectal layers in West Iranian: a Hierarchical Dirichlet Process Approach to Linguistic Relationships Chundra A. Cathcart Department of Comparative Language Science/ Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Language Evolution University of Zurich December 2019 (revised June 2021) Abstract This paper addresses a series of complex and unresolved issues in the historical phonology of West Iranian languages, (Persian, Kurdish, Balochi, and other languages), which display a high degree of non-Lautgesetzlich behavior. Most of this irregularity is undoubtedly due to language contact; we argue, however, that an oversimplified view of the processes at work has prevailed in the lit- erature on West Iranian dialectology, with specialists assuming that deviations from an expected outcome in a given non-Persian language are due to lexical borrowing from some chronological stage of Persian. It is demonstrated that this qualitative approach yields at times problematic conclusions stemming from the lack of explicit probabilistic inferences regarding the distribution of the data: Persian may not be the sole donor language; additionally, borrowing at the lexical level is not always the mechanism that introduces irregularity. In many cases, the possibility that West Iranian languages show different reflexes in different conditioning environments remains under-explored. We employ a novel Bayesian approach designed to overcome these problems and tease apart the different determinants of irregularity in patterns of West Iranian sound change. Our methodology allows us to provisionally resolve a number of outstanding questions in the lit- erature on West Iranian dialectology concerning the dialectal affiliation of certain sound changes. We outline future directions for work of this sort. arXiv:2001.05297v3 [cs.CL] 26 Jul 2021 1 Introduction Isoglosses based on sound changes differentiating the West Iranian languages, a group comprising Persian, Kurdish, Balochi, and other speech varieties, have long been of interest to linguists.

Ancak, söz konusu politika I.

  • A Study of the Turkmen Dialects of Afghanistan : Phonology
A Study of the Turkmen Dialects of Afghanistan Phonology – Morphology – Lexicon – Sociolinguistic Aspects Dissertation zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades doctor philosophiae (Dr. phil.) eingereicht an der Kultur-, Sozial- und Bildungswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin von Muhammad Salih Rasekh Präsident der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Prof. Dr. Jan-Hendrik Olbertz Dekanin der Kultur-, Sozial- und Bildungswissenschaftlichen Fakultät Prof. Dr. Julia von Blumenthal Gutachter: 1. Prof. Dr. phil. Ingeborg Baldauf 2. Prof. Dr. Semih Tezcan Tag der mündlichen Prüfung: 07.10.2016 PREFACE The dissertation project whose final written product is submitted here was devoted to the study of the contemporary Turkmen dialects of Afghanistan. At present the Turkmen speaking population of Afghanistan is estimated to make up close to two million. The Turkmen language, which belongs to the South Western or Oghuz group of the Turkic languages, has for centuries been present in the region which is today North Afghanistan but due to various historical reasons has not only not kept pace with the development of some of its neighboring languages, but has even been reduced to the condition of an illiterate idiom which includes a number of dialects but is not united by a shared standard language. The Teke dialect, which in the Republic of Turkmenistan forms the basis of today's standard state language, features among the Afghan Turkmen dialects, but speakers of the Ä:rsarı dialect by far outnumber those of the Teke dialects in Afghanistan. Along with these two most prominent idioms, roughly half a dozen distinct Turkmen dialects are represented on Afghan soil today.

REZENSIONEN - COMPTES RENDUS - REVIEWS Killingley, Dermot, Beginning Sanskrit: A Practical Course Based on Graded Reading and Exercises. Newcastle upon Tyne: Grevatt & Grevatt, 2003-2004. 3 Volumes: Vol. 1, Second Edition, 2004, xx + 181 pp., ISBN 0-947722-22-X; Vol. 2, Second Edition, 2004, xvi + 241 pp., ISBN 0- 947722-23-8; Vol. 3, 2003, xviii + 224 pp., ISBN 0-947722-21-1.
