Schlitt SUMMARY History and clinical findings: The authors describe a new extracorporeal pumpless interventional lung assistance system (iLA) which was inserted in a young US soldier suffering from severe acute respiratory distress syndrome with critical hypoxemia/hypercapnia after blast injury in Baghdad. The system is characterized by a new membrane gas exchange system with optimized blood flow which is integrated in an arterial-venous bypass established by cannulation of the femoral artery and vein. After implementation of the system, gas exchange improved rapidly, and the patient was airlifted from Iraq to Regensburg University Hospital, where he recovered gradually. Treatment and clinical course: The system was removed after 15 days, and the patient was successfully weaned from mechanical ventilation. Discussion: iLA serves as an enabling device for artificial lung assistance with easy use and low cost. However, bleeding complications and ischemia of the lower limb can occur as a consequence of wide bore cannulation of the femoral artery. Further prospective studies are needed to establish whether iLA can be adopted more widely. Dtsch Arztebl 2006; 103(42):A 2797–2801. They also had five daughters. His father was away in the Seven Years' War when Friedrich was born. He was named after king Frederick the Great, but he was called Fritz by nearly everyone. Kaspar Schiller was rarely home during the war, but he did manage to visit the family once in a while. His wife and children also visited him occasionally wherever he happened to be stationed. When the war ended in 1763, Schiller's father became a recruiting officer and was stationed in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The family moved with him. Due to the high cost of living—especially the rent—the family moved to nearby Lorch.

For Week 4 the focus was on the impact of the Napoleonic wars. In recent times, scholars have been emphasising the far reaching effects of these wars. The Fellows were asked to consider some points set out by Dr Ben Marsh of the University of Kent about the wars: Confrontation of larger armies than have taken the field for centuries Regime change, bloodshed, and economic malaise feed off one another Mass conscription and participation brings new styles to global warfare Advances made in technology, recruitment, training, and organisation French pioneer artillery and new infantry formations to great effect British and allies struggle to contain Napoleon but avoid knockout until 1812 Von Clausewitz constructs new theory of war on basis of experiences The Fellows were then asked to suggest how they might use the Battle of Waterloo as a hook to help students to think more widely about the context and impact of the Napoleonic Wars: You can do this by focussing on the domestic impact in Britain or look more widely at the European context. Begin by using the knowledge of Waterloo you gained on the residential and broaden your thinking using the suggested resources below. Their President, Ellen Dowling, has requested, and I have extended an invitation to her, her Board of Directors, and IAS members at large to address the GAC at our next Board meeting.

The Tower of London, founded by William the Conqueror in 1066-7, is one of the world’s most famous fortresses, and Britain’s most visited heritage site. It was built to protect and control the city and the White Tower survives largely intact from the Norman period. Architecture of almost all styles that have since flourished in England may be found within the walls. The Tower has been a fortress, a palace and a prison, and has housed the Royal Mint, the Public Records and the Royal Observatory. It was for centuries the arsenal for small arms, the predecessor of the present Royal Armouries, and has from early times guarded the Crown Jewels. Today the Tower is the key to British history for visitors who come every year from all over the world to relive the past and to enjoy the pageantry of the present. It is deservedly a World Heritage Site. The Government is accountable to UNESCO and the wider international community for the future conservation and presentation of the Tower. It is a responsibility we take seriously. The purpose of the Plan is to provide an agreed framework for long-term decision-making on the conservation and improvement of the Tower and sustaining its outstanding universal value.
