Boundaries: The Washington Bridge Landmark is encompassed by a line running southward parallel with the eastern curb line of Amsterdam Avenue; a line running eastward which is the extension of the southern curb line of West 181st Street to the point where it crosses Undercliff Avenue; a line running northward parallel with the eastern curb line of Undercliff Avenue; a line running westward from Undercliff Avenue which intersects with the extension of the northern curb lin~ of West 181st Street, to_t~~ point of beginning. On November 18, 1980, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Washington Bridge and the pro posed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No 8.). -

BSL CLASSROOM LOCATION GUIDE BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK A BIT OF HISTORY FIRST! In 1642, the first ferry landing opened on the land that is now Brooklyn Bridge Park's Empire Fulton Ferry section. As the 18th century came to a close, additional ferry services were added to this waterfront community, including docking points for the "Catherine Street Ferry" and the first steamboat ferry landing that was created by Robert Fulton, which eventually became known as the Fulton Ferry Landing. The community continued to grow into the 19th century as Brooklyn Heights developed into a residential neighborhood, eventually becoming one of America's first suburbs. In 1883, the Brooklyn Bridge was opened. Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre (34 ha) park on the Brooklyn side of the East River in New York City, next to the Brooklyn Bridge. From north to south, the park includes the preexisting Empire–Fulton Ferry and Main Street Parks; the historic Fulton Ferry Landing; and Piers 1–6, which contain various playgrounds and residential developments. Fatigue phenomena are governed by the creation and growth of cracks, which can propagate through the material under stress until the material fails from fracture. Since these cracks take time to form and grow, cyclic loading is the main driver of fatigue in steel. Two historic steel-truss railroad bridges were dismantled and several joints were extracted intact from each bridge. Historic railroad bridges built around the turn of the 19th century were mostly not designed for fatigue, so it has become necessary to study these bridges to understand their fatigue behavior. Additionally, many in-service bridges in the United States are very old, are approaching the end of their useful service lives, and do not have accurate as-built information readily available. Much research has been done to develop and evaluate experimental methods to evaluate the structural health of bridges in situ, however these often rely heavily on certain assumptions that may or may not hold. Often historic bridge behavior is a surprise to engineers and gives unexpected results. -

The Tower of London, founded by William the Conqueror in 1066-7, is one of the world’s most famous fortresses, and Britain’s most visited heritage site. It was built to protect and control the city and the White Tower survives largely intact from the Norman period. Architecture of almost all styles that have since flourished in England may be found within the walls. The Tower has been a fortress, a palace and a prison, and has housed the Royal Mint, the Public Records and the Royal Observatory. It was for centuries the arsenal for small arms, the predecessor of the present Royal Armouries, and has from early times guarded the Crown Jewels. Today the Tower is the key to British history for visitors who come every year from all over the world to relive the past and to enjoy the pageantry of the present. It is deservedly a World Heritage Site. The Government is accountable to UNESCO and the wider international community for the future conservation and presentation of the Tower. It is a responsibility we take seriously. The purpose of the Plan is to provide an agreed framework for long-term decision-making on the conservation and improvement of the Tower and sustaining its outstanding universal value. -
