On a more serious note there have been some misunderstandings between the GAC and one of our oldest and most highly valued associate clubs the Irish-American Society (IAS). Their President, Ellen Dowling, has requested, and I have extended an invitation to her, her Board of Directors, and IAS members at large to address the GAC at our next Board meeting. I am confident that when all views are aired an amicable and durable understanding will be reached. Lance Klafeta NEWS AND NOTES Kaffeeklatsch Please join us at the GAC for the Kaffeeklatsch at 3pm on Sunday, June 2nd Please call Kathe Mirabal at 505-836-6182 for more information. Here’s an article a former GAC German Culture Chair, Brigitta Walker, now deceased, had written back in January 2011. History of Germany The ancient Romans used the name ‘Germani’ for all of the tribes which spoke Germanic lan- guages or dialects. This is where the English word German comes from. Deutsch, which is what the Germans call themselves, comes from the root “theodisk”, which meant “the people”. When the Romans ruled the world, the Germanic tribes lived in a land full of dark forests. They had small round houses and loved family life. They also loved fighting and wanted to go where the weather was warmer and less rainy, namely west and south. The Romans wanted to keep them where they were, and declared the Rhine and Danube Riv- ers as frontiers. They built fortress towns for the military. That is why there are only rem- nants of the Roman buildings yet today in cities like Augsburg, Regensburg, Trier, and Co- logne. In the Middle Ages Germany was a patchwork of small states ruled by kings, princes, and dukes. These rulers built the castles which can still be seen all over Germany, and especially along the Rhine River. The people lived in villages which grew up outside the castle walls. Only in the 19th century did Germany become one country. German inventors, engineers and industrialists such as Zeppelin, Daimler, Diesel, Otto, Wankel, von Braun and Benz helped shape modern automotive and air transportation technology including the beginnings of space travel. The work of Albert Einstein and Max Planck was crucial to the foundation of modern physics, which Werner Heisenberg and Erwin Schrödinger developed further. They were preceded by such key physicists as Hermann von Helmholtz, Joseph von Fraunhofer, and Gabriel Daniel Fahrenheit, among others.
