The Grounded Theory: Wineries responding to a changing market ................................... 243 7. Conclusion ............................................................................................................................ 254 References .................................................................................................................................... 258 ii ABSTRACT This research explores the construction of winery identity in France and Australia. Focusing on wine producers’ perspectives, it is based on case studies of four wineries in Bordeaux (France) and The Grampians (Australia). The research concerns premium, boutique wine producers in both regions. To situate the study in context, the thesis begins with an historical account of the global wine industry, and of each of the two regions. An ethnographical grounded theory approach was used to collect and analyse data from the four case study wineries. Data was collected in the form of interviews, observations and published material, and was analysed using a coding process to organise the data into thematic categories. A detailed ethnographical account of each winery was drawn, revealing producers’ motivations, aspirations, philosophies and values. Relationships and change emerged from the data as the two most significant concerns for the wineries as a group. In a rapidly changing market, increased competition and changing consumption habits have augmented the importance of relationships in the wine world and forced producers to rethink how they operate. The research revealed that their principal question is how to continue producing authentic, quality wine while adapting to globalisation, fierce competition, new modes of communication and changing consumer desires. Through exploring the significance of relationships and change, the analysis produced a theory of the way wineries define their identity, craft their image and tell their story in response to the changing market and as a means of ensuring future success. Thus, via the case studies, the research explores the development of winery identity in France and Australia in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in a global context. As a cross-cultural study that considers the many factors that constitute and influence how wineries craft their image and tell their story, it aims to elucidate the interaction between production, consumption, commercialisation and culture in a global marketplace. iii DECLARATION This is to certify that: i. the thesis comprises only my original work towards the PhD except where indicated in the preface; ii. due acknowledgement has been made in the text to all other material used; iii. the thesis is fewer than the maximum word limit in length, exclusive of tables, maps, bibliographies and appendices. Amie Sexton ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I am very grateful to the people who have been involved in my research. Thanks to all the interviewees in France and Australia, and the many other people in the wine industry who took the time to discuss their world and assist me with my project. Thanks to my supervisors, A/Prof Jacqueline Dutton, Dr Andrew McGregor and Dr Alastair Hurst, for their guidance. Heartfelt gratitude to family and friends for support in many shapes and forms along the way. Giant thanks and infinite love to my two amazing small people, Gabriel and Lucie, who have lived the PhD process with me. I gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Fay Marles Scholarship and Australian Government Research Training Program Scholarship throughout my candidature, and The Elizabeth & Nicholas Slezak Scholarship, The Richard Gunter Bursary, The University of Melbourne French Trust Fund Scholarship, and the Institut des Sciences de la Vigne et du Vin for travel support for the fieldwork. iv 1. INTRODUCTION This research set out to explore wine in France and Australia from an anthropological perspective. Although there are many people involved in the production and consumption of wine – from grape growers to journalists, sommeliers to consumers – I chose to focus on wine producers, the people responsible for creating this beverage and sending it out to the world. As there has been very little research on wine producers to date, the study is exploratory in nature, seeking to discover

It is a platform where exceptional winemaking from Asian wine regions are celebrated and acknowledged. 2018 marks the third consecutive year of the publication and witnessed continuous support from both wineries and wine associations. With the core values of the review stronger than ever, it has been recognised by Wine-Searcher and they have become a premium sponsor and partner of the Asian Wine Review 2018. Wine submissions are now open for AWR 2019. We aim to continue the success of the review and welcome past and new wineries to participate. AN INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE IN 2019 The time has arrived for Asian wines to be taken seriously. Having tasted impeccable examples while judging over the past five years, I am compelled to provide a platform for international recognition of Asian wines. I am convinced that Asian made wine firmly deserves its place at the dinner table. But what about the rest of our industry and our consumers? Turning a blind eye to Asian production would be a mistake. Although traditionalists may scoff, Asian wine is coming to a store near you, so being noticed and recognized is vital. The wealth of talent combining formally trained local winemakers, alongside international winemakers in the region, are at the forefront of this change. The ongoing success story of the publication was marked this year with the participation of Wine-Searcher as a premium sponsor.

  • Hong Kong to Host Stonier International Pinot Noir Tasting This November
Hong Kong to host Stonier International Pinot Noir Tasting this November The Stonier International Pinot Noir Tasting (SIPNOT) will debut in Hong Kong this November, giving the local wine trade a rare opportunity to participate in one of the world’s leading benchmarking events for Pinot Noir. Led by renowned wine critic Jeannie Cho Lee MW and joined by The Flying Winemaker, Eddie McDougall and Stonier winemaker Mike Symons, the tasting has a history in Australia of driving interest and discussion around Pinot Noir wines from all regions of the world. “Traditionally, the Pinot Noir story in Hong Kong has centred on Burgundy and this tasting aims to expand the knowledge and exposure to outstanding Pinot Noir producers from other fine wine regions of the world, many of which have developed a highly regarded history with this fussy variety” says Symons. “SIPNOT has helped benchmark Pinot Noir from regions all around the world, boosting our knowledge and appreciation of prime Pinot regions beyond France.” For 15 years Stonier has presented the SIPNOT event to pinot lovers in its home town of Melbourne, as well as in Sydney and London. Jeannie Cho Lee joins an esteemed list of SIPNOT panel alumni, including the likes of Tim Atkin MW, Matthew Jukes, James Halliday AO, Andrew Caillard MW and the late Len Evans AO OBE. At SIPNOT Hong Kong, guests will enjoy 12 world class Pinots from Old and New World producers, which have proven to excel in making exceptional Pinot Noir. Attendees will receive a tasting booklet, which will list the event wines, however the order of wines in each bracket won’t be revealed until the very end.

MEDIA RELEASE Our Ref: T15:0032 14 November 2011 Attention: News Editor Wine push targets Taiwan, Hong Kong Hong Kong and Taiwanese wine buyers took advantage of close encounters with Great Southern wines at trade initiatives from November 3 to 7. With support from the Great Southern Development Commission (GSDC) and Austrade, six Great Southern wineries took part in the 2011 Hong Kong International Wine and Spirit Fair (HKIWSF), attended by up to 14,000 delegates, and a targeted tasting event Forest Hill general manager Paul Byron in Taipei, Taiwan. introduces the winery’s range to some Taiwanese wine tasters. GSDC Chief Executive Officer Bruce Manning said ensuring that regional wineries were represented at the key target market events continued the push to grow Great Southern wine exports. “Recent initiatives have helped to raise the profile of Great Southern wines in Asian markets,” Mr Manning said. “Promoting the region’s wines at the Hong Kong wine fair gained exposure to thousands of delegates. “Great Southern riesling was highlighted at a masterclass, and a networking event gave importers and distributors a chance to meet the producers. “Following the Hong Kong event, the visit to Taiwan provided the opportunity to build a presence in a relatively new market for Great Southern wines,” Mr Manning said.
