The Gesneriaceae of Sulawesi I: an Introduction

ATKINS* Sulawesi (Celebes) is the largest island in the biogeographic region of Wallacea. The Gesneriaceae of the island are represented by 11 genera, some of which show a very high degree of endemism. Knowledge of the origin and affinities of the flora of this island is important for an understanding of the biogeography of the area. The Gesneriaceae promise to be excellent models for phytogeographic analysis, but before this, basic taxonomic studies must be carried out. A list of the currently known genera and species is provided, and descriptions of new taxa will be published over the coming months. Keywords. The islands of SE Asia comprise one of the most geologically complex regions in the world (Audley-Charles, 1981; Hall, 1996, 1998), at the meeting point of three major tectonic plates. Its turbulent geological history and exceptionally high levels of biological endemism make this region of prime interest to biogeographers. Wallace’s line, one of the most important biogeographic boundaries in the world, bisects the archipelago, and was originally thought to mark the meeting point of the Oriental and Australasian fauna and flora. Since Wallace first drew his line in 1863, many others have been drawn, reflecting different hypotheses based on the distribu- tion patterns of different taxa (summarized in Scrivener et al., 1943; Simpson, 1977). The difficulty of agreeing on a single line eventually resulted in the identification of a zone of transition in the centre of Malesia (Dickerson, 1928). -

To identify genomic elements that regulate dehydration and alkaline tolerance in Boea hygrometrica, a resurrection plant that inhabits drought and alkaline Karst areas, a genomic DNA library from B. hygrometrica was constructed and subsequently transformed into Arabidopsis using binary bacterial artificial chromosome (BIBAC) vectors. Transgenic lines were screened under osmotic and alkaline conditions, leading to the identification of Clone L1-4 that conferred osmotic and alkaline tolerance. Sequence analyses revealed that L1-4 contained a 49-kb retroelement fragment from B. hygrometrica, of which only a truncated sequence was present in L1-4 transgenic Arabidopsis plants. Additional subcloning revealed that activity resided in a 2-kb sequence, designated Osmotic and Alkaline Resistance 1 (OAR1). In addition, transgenic Arabidopsis lines carrying an OAR1-homologue also showed similar stress tolerance phenotypes. Physiological and molecular analyses demonstrated that OAR1-transgenic plants exhibited improved photochemical efficiency and membrane integrity and biomarker gene expression under both osmotic and alkaline stresses. -

They are exclusively distributed in undisturbed habitats, and some have high ornamental value. The species are morphologically diverse, but face a problem of taxonomic delineation, which is further complicated by the presence of putative hybrids. -

With more than 130 described species, Paraboea has become one of the most characteristic plant groups in the Southeast Asian limestone fora. During the course of extensive feld work on the limestone formations of southern and southwestern China, three unknown species of Paraboea were collected. Results: Molecular phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ITS and chloroplast trnL-F sequences strongly con‑ frm the placements of the three new species in Paraboea sensu Puglisi et al. (Taxon 65:277–292. https://doi. org/10.12705/652.5, 2016). Moreover, these three novelties can be distinguished from known Paraboea species with distinct morphological characters, further supporting their recognition as new species. Conclusions: With the support of detailed morphological studies and molecular phylogenetic analyses, Paraboea dushanensis, P. sinovietnamica and P. xiangguiensis are recognized as three species new to science. Rothrock, Ph.D. Taylor University Upland, IN 46989-1001 Introduction Since the early nineteenth century the Indiana landscape has undergone a massive transformation (Jackson 1997). In the pre-settlement period, Indiana was an almost unbroken blanket of forests, prairies, and wetlands. Much of the land was cleared, plowed, or drained for lumber, the raising of crops, and a range of urban and industrial activities. Indiana’s native biota is now restricted to relatively small and often isolated tracts across the State. This fragmentation and reduction of the State’s biological diversity has challenged Hoosiers to look carefully at how to monitor further changes within our remnant natural communities and how to effectively conserve and even restore many of these valuable places within our State. To meet this monitoring, conservation, and restoration challenge, one needs to develop a variety of appropriate analytical tools. Ideally these techniques should be simple to learn and apply, give consistent results between different observers, and be repeatable. Floristic Assessment, which includes metrics such as the Floristic Quality Index (FQI) and Mean C values, has gained wide acceptance among environmental scientists and decision-makers, land stewards, and restoration ecologists in Indiana’s neighboring states and regions: Illinois (Taft et al. 1997), Michigan (Herman et al. 1996), Missouri (Ladd 1996), and Wisconsin (Bernthal 2003) as well as northern Ohio (Andreas 1993) and southern Ontario (Oldham et al. -

Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Malaysia has initiated, produced and launched a National Policy on Biological Diversity in 1998 which contains policy statement, principles, objectives, rationales, strategies and above all action plans of programmes. The policy places great importance on taxonomy in realising the true dimension of biodiversity in the country and that taxonomy is a cornerstone of biodiversity has long been accepted and understood. Yet, many taxonomic institutions such as National Natural History Museum and National Herbarium are not within sight. Taxonomy is not prioritised within the R & D mechanism, capacity building is not undertaken with an accepted vigour, systematic research centres are not established, school and university curricula have not addressed taxonomic curricula, proper training of taxonomists and parataxonomists are not planned, and data management is not adequately placed either. Ironically the rate of ecosystem and habitat degradation and loss, species loss and genetic erosion are occurring at a rate unsurpassed in the past. Is there any crisis in Malaysian taxonomy and plant taxonomy in particular? The taxonomic community is small and aged. The reference collections are still small, the scientific productivity in term of publication of papers to report new species, new records, taxonomic revisions, phylogenetic relationships, variations, species loss and conservation efforts are still inadequate. The floristic treatments for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak and the Flora of Peninsular Malaysia are going-on. An attempt is made here to relate the richness of biodiversity to taxonomy so that the latter’s impediments could be properly addressed. -

It is the first detailed and overall classification of the family that is essentially based on molecular phylogenetic studies. Three subfamilies are recognized: Sanangoideae (monospecific with Sanango racemosum), Gesnerioideae and Didymocarpoideae. As to recent molecular data, Sanango/Sanangoideae (New World) is sister to Gesnerioideae + Didymocarpoideae. Its inclusion in the Gesneriaceae amends the traditional concept of the family and makes the family distinctly older. Subfam. Gesnerioideae (New World, if not stated otherwise with the tribes) is subdivided into five tribes: Titanotricheae (monospecific, East Asia), Napeantheae (monogeneric), Beslerieae (with two subtribes: Besleriinae and Anetanthinae), Coronanthereae (with three subtribes: Coronantherinae, Mitrariinae and Negriinae; southern hemisphere), and Gesnerieae [with five subtribes: Gesneriinae, Gloxiniinae, Columneinae (5the traditional Episcieae), Sphaerorrhizinae (5the traditional Sphaerorhizeae, monogeneric), and Ligeriinae (5the traditional Sinningieae)]. Additionally, the status of plant collections in Panama is discussed; we focused on the areas where we identified significant information gaps regarding real assessments of plant biodiversity in the country.
