Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, 43600 Bangi, Selangor, Malaysia Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT Malaysia has initiated, produced and launched a National Policy on Biological Diversity in 1998 which contains policy statement, principles, objectives, rationales, strategies and above all action plans of programmes. The policy places great importance on taxonomy in realising the true dimension of biodiversity in the country and that taxonomy is a cornerstone of biodiversity has long been accepted and understood. Yet, many taxonomic institutions such as National Natural History Museum and National Herbarium are not within sight. Taxonomy is not prioritised within the R & D mechanism, capacity building is not undertaken with an accepted vigour, systematic research centres are not established, school and university curricula have not addressed taxonomic curricula, proper training of taxonomists and parataxonomists are not planned, and data management is not adequately placed either. Ironically the rate of ecosystem and habitat degradation and loss, species loss and genetic erosion are occurring at a rate unsurpassed in the past. Is there any crisis in Malaysian taxonomy and plant taxonomy in particular? The taxonomic community is small and aged. The reference collections are still small, the scientific productivity in term of publication of papers to report new species, new records, taxonomic revisions, phylogenetic relationships, variations, species loss and conservation efforts are still inadequate. The floristic treatments for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak and the Flora of Peninsular Malaysia are going-on. An attempt is made here to relate the richness of biodiversity to taxonomy so that the latter’s impediments could be properly addressed. -

Perrie1,*, B.S. Parris2, C.-W. Chen3, D.J. Ohlsen4, P.J. Brownsey1 Key words Abstract A new species, Asplenium alleniae, is described from high elevation habitats in Sabah (Malaysia) and Papua New Guinea. Previous phylogenetic analyses of chloroplast loci determined that A. alleniae was most closely conservation related to A. pauperequitum from New Zealand. Asplenium alleniae differs from A. pauperequitum most obviously by Malaysia the acuminate apices of its longer pinnae. The combination of pinnate fronds with few pairs of primary pinnae and Malesia dark red-brown axes distinguishes A. alleniae from superficially similar species of Asplenium in Malesia. INTRODUCTION by Parris et al. (1992) matched the morphology of Chen Wade 4599. Here, we name this species as A. alleniae Parris ex Parris Asplenium L. is one of the largest fern genera, with over 700 & Perrie. We provide a morphological description, distinguish species (Ohlsen et al. 2014a, Xu et al. 2020). Its species are it from related or superficially similar species, map its known morphologically and ecologically diverse, with fronds varying distribution, and suggest a conservation status. -

Thus, this study was carried out at Kubah National Park as the park is known for its flora and fauna diversity to investigate plant species which are of timber-related importance. The study identified and documented seven different plant families with 12 species of timber-related usage at Kubah National Park. Out of 18 million hectare (mil ha) of total forested area in the country including the 444 protected areas nationwide, five mil ha are managed by the respective federal and state forest authorities as resources for timber production (Cedergren, Falck, Garcia, Goh & Hagner, 2002; Lee & Watling, 2005; MNRE, 2015; Pakhriazad & Mohd Hasmadi, 2010; Teo, Chai & Phua, 2013). -

Key words: pteridophytes, floristics, phylogenetics ABSTRACT The status of floristic work on pteridophytes around the world is reviewed. Relatively modern floras exist for most temperate and Mediterranean areas, including Europe, the former Soviet Union, North America north of Mexico, Chile, South Africa, and Australia, but are absent, partial, or outdated for many, if not most, tropical and subtropical countries/regions. Exceptions in the New World include Mexico, Mesoamerica, and certain of the Antilles. For many areas we have only annotated checklists (e.g., Tropical East Africa, Malaysia, Mount Kinabalu) or partially written floras (Ecuador, Malesia). Modern treatments for island floras are also few, exceptions being for New Zealand (Brownsey & Smith-Dodsworth, 2001), Hawaii (Palmer, 2003), and the Mariana Islands (Raulerson & Rinehart, 1992). Floristic “hotspots”, e.g., Colombia, Brazil, Madagascar, New Guinea, and the Himalayas, often have inadequate or incomplete modern accounts. Treatments of the ferns are planned or in progress for many countries, including Venezuela, Bolivia, East Africa, and China, but these often proceed at a painstakingly slow pace. Local florulas, such as for Barro Colorado Island in Panama, complement
