The present study reports the biotransformation of an anabolic-androgenic steroid (AAS) drostanolone heptanoate (1) by using two microbial cultures, Beauveria bassiana, and Macrophomina phaseolina. Fermentation of 1 with B. bassiana yielded five new transformed products 2–6, while with M. phaseolina Received 29th July 2019 it afforded two new 7–8, and two known 9–10 metabolites. The main sites of hydroxylation in the Accepted 6th December 2019 steroidal skeleton of 1 were at C-5, C-7, C-11, C-14, C-15, and C-20, hydrolysis of the ester moiety at C- DOI: 10.1039/c9ra05878h 17, and reduction of the carbonyl group at C-3. The structures of the transformed products were Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 Unported Licence. rsc.li/rsc-advances determined by using mass, NMR, and other spectroscopic techniques.
1 Introduction Drostanolone heptanoate ( )(C27H44O3) is a dihydrotestosterone (DHT)-derived anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS). Athletes, and body Steroids constitute an important class of biologically active builders use it to increase muscles strength, and body mass without 6 compounds due to their anabolic, anti-inammatory, anti- gaining fat. However, due to its adverse effects on liver, serum lipid, microbial, anti-leishmanial, and anti-cancer properties.
