  • Johann Sebastian Bach Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068
PROGRAM NOTES by Phillip Huscher Johann Sebastian Bach Born March 21, 1685, Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany. Died July 28, 1750, Leipzig, Germany. Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major, BWV 1068 Although the dating of Bach’s four orchestral suites is uncertain, the third was probably written in 1731. The score calls for two oboes, three trumpets, timpani, and harpsichord, with strings and basso continuo. Performance time is approximately twenty -one minutes. The Chicago Sympho ny Orchestra’s first subscription concert performances of Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite were given at the Auditorium Theatre on October 23 and 24, 1891, with Theodore Thomas conducting. Our most recent subscription concert performances were given on May 15 , 16, 17, and 20, 2003, with Jaime Laredo conducting. The Orchestra first performed the Air and Gavotte from this suite at the Ravinia Festival on June 29, 1941, with Frederick Stock conducting; the complete suite was first performed at Ravinia on August 5 , 1948, with Pierre Monteux conducting, and most recently on August 28, 2000, with Vladimir Feltsman conducting. When the young Mendelssohn played the first movement of Bach’s Third Orchestral Suite on the piano for Goethe, the poet said he could see “a p rocession of elegantly dressed people proceeding down a great staircase.” Bach’s music was nearly forgotten in 1830, and Goethe, never having heard this suite before, can be forgiven for wanting to attach a visual image to such stately and sweeping music. Today it’s hard to imagine a time when Bach’s name meant little to music lovers and when these four orchestral suites weren’t considered landmarks.

(RE)CONSTRUCTING JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH: RECEPTION HISTORY AND PERFORMANCE PRACTICE IN NEW YORK CITY DURING THE GREAT WAR A THESIS IN Musicology Presented to the faculty of the University of Missouri-Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF MUSIC By THOMAS JARED MARKS B.M. University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2010 Kansas City, Missouri 2013 ©2013 THOMAS JARED MARKS ALL RIGHTS RESERVED (RE)CONSTRUCTING JOHANN SEBASTIAN BACH: RECEPTION HISTORY AND PERFORMANCE PRACTICE IN NEW YORK CITY DURING THE GREAT WAR Thomas Jared Marks, Candidate for the Master of Music Degree University of Missouri-Kansas City, 2013 ABSTRACT The perception of Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) in New York City during the time of the Great War can be illuminated through two threads: 1) reception history and reputation, and 2) contemporary performance practices. Between 1914 and 1927, the reputation of Bach migrated away from one having nationalistic and Romantic associations to one embodying both a “universal” objectivity and a distinctly American subjectivity. Similarly, the manner in which Bach’s music was performed also changed. Before the Great War, transcribing and arranging Bach’s music was common. After the war, some New York City critics began to advocate for Bach’s music to be played as historical reconstructions. Transcriptions and arrangements continued to be performed alongside historical reconstructions, and both a subjective and historically “objective” approaches to performing the composer’s music existed. New York City musician William Henry Humiston (1869-1923) and his idea of Bach provides a useful case study of one musician’s approach to understanding the composer.

It was, of course, at precisely this time that Bach's music began to be published in the first scholarly complete edition known to European music history. One way of spreading the word about this music was for musicians to make arrangements for their own instruments of music they particularly admired, often romanticizing the work in the process, because the point was interpretation, not historical re-creation. Probably the best-known example of this approach is the so-called "Air on the G-string" created from the Aria in Bach's Orchestral Suite No. 3. Handel's music, too, underwent this kind of transformation. The Passacaglia to be heard here is an arrangement by Johan Halvorsen, a contemporary of Grieg's, of the finale from Handel's Keyboard Suite No.

SELECTED STUDENTS OF LEOPOLD AUER – A STUDY IN VIOLIN PERFORMANCE-PRACTICE by RUTH ELIZABETH RODRIGUES A thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Music School of Humanities The University of Birmingham October 2009 University of Birmingham Research Archive e-theses repository This unpublished thesis/dissertation is copyright of the author and/or third parties. Abstract This thesis investigates the teaching and legacy of Leopold Auer; it addresses, in particular to what extent his promulgation of the ‘German’ School of Violin Playing was instrumental in establishing the ‘Russian’ and ‘American’ Schools. Recent research in late 19th-century violin performance-practice has focused mainly on the ‘German’ and ‘Franco-Belgian’ Schools, and on tracing ‘genealogies’ of violin playing, especially within the ‘German’ school itself. Auer, however, has been little studied, as remarkably is also true for descendents of the German school such as Ossip Schnirlin, Benno Rabinof, and Mischa Weisbord. This research will also briefly examine the authority of Joachim and Auer (who were both native Hungarians) on their students with regards to Hungarian musical gestures and Gypsy performance styles, in an era where violin playing was more uniform and the style hongrois gradually disappearing from Western music altogether.
