Kahmann [email protected] Modal Ambiguity and the Hybrid Mode in the Music of Gryphon Presented at the 2008 meeting of the Music Theory Midwest Conference 1 Kahmann, MTMW Presentation During the time following the British and American folk revivals (c. 1955-1975)1 and at the height of the progressive rock movement (early and mid-1970’s), the British band Gryphon entered the musical scene with its self-titled debut album, Gryphon (1973). The album contained folk songs and arrangements of traditional tunes that highlight the early music influences of the founding band members. Throughout the next three albums, the music of Gryphon underwent a rapid development of style, timbre, and harmonic language. Examples 1 and 2 in the handout illustrate the changes that occurred in band membership and instrumentation. One specific aspect of Gryphon’s harmonic language will be examined today through analysis of three compositions, taken from the albums Gryphon, Midnight Mushrumps, and Raindance. Although much of Gryphon’s music utilizes the Ionian mode and harmonic minor scale, in sections of modal ambiguity, the band pulled from a distinct collection of pitches that draws upon inflections from multiple modes. It is this hybrid mode that will be examined here today. Before presenting any analysis, I feel it necessary to present a brief history of the band’s founding members; their diverse musical backgrounds play a role in aspects of the band’s harmonic language. Gryphon began as a trio, with members Richard Harvey, Brian Gulland, and Graeme Taylor.2 Richard Harvey was trained in clarinet, theory, harmony, and choral singing as 3 4 a youth and studied clarinet at the Royal College of Music in London.

I am no longer a young man (not by a long shot!) and don't have the energy to pursue ways in which we may be able to promote the business. I would love to be able to settle down and listen to all the music I have gathered over the years in a relaxed setting and with critical reviewing faculties turned off. I would love to see Roots & Rhythm continue and thrive and even if we make it through the current crisis I would still like to get away from the stress of running a business so I am open to having someone else take over and move the company forward. This list consists of a sale which we hope will raise enough money to help us get caught up with our suppliers and our taxes as well as some other pressing expenses. This list features 600 titles in all covering all the genres of music we specialize in and featuring books, DVDs and compact discs. And soon we’ll be 25 years young. Just like the 60s, many of us were there but can’t remember much about the early years apart from the fact that we had a spiffing time. From the mid-90s to the present day - let’s call this period A.D. (‘After Digitalisation’) - we have a full record of our guests, thanks to the efforts of our resident IT expert Graham Gurrin, who created the website. In fact, we were one of the first clubs to have one of these new-fangled things (as opposed to the traditional web sites that have hung unmolested in our rafters since we came here) …which brings us to the period B.C. (‘Before Computers’). Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient papyrus of the early gospels known as ‘The Ram Page’ got lost somewhere along the road to Damascus. Typewriters of the day did not have memories, less so the scribes. And if only there was an ‘undo’ button in life..... The club was started at the Greyhound pub in Weston Green in October 1983 by Brian and Jane Ravenhill, and continued for many successful years under their stewardship (with help from others), moving briefly to Weybridge before finding its spiritual home here at the Foley Arms in 1987.

    ABSTRACT OF THESIS GRYPHON: ORIGINS, INFLUENCES, AND STYLISTIC DEVELOPMENT Progressive rock during the late 1960’s and throughout the 1970’s contained an eclectic mix of musical genres whose inspirations range from Western classical music to Indian ragas. This thesis focuses on the predominantly folk-inspired band Gryphon and its stylistic development from 1973-1975. One song from each of Gryphon’s first four albums is analyzed to show the band’s progression from its folk roots to an ensemble that combined rock, classical, folk, and jazz styles. The compositions analyzed are “Juniper Suite” from Gryphon, “Midnight Mushrumps” from Midnight Mushrumps, “Checkmate” from Red Queen to Gryphon Three, and “(Ein Klein) Heldenleben” from Raindance. A mutual desire to play English country music led John and Sue to muscle in, and by early 1974 Umps & Dumps had taken over, with the addition of oboe and concertina. Sue switched to hammered dulcimer in 1975. John Tams left in 1976 and now plays in The Albion Band. Alan joined in 1977 after working with Tufty and Sue as Hammer & Tongs. "Folk Music & Beyond" is a weekly program that showcases folklrootsiCeltic/acoustic­ based music mostly from AJrerica, the British Isles, Ireland, and occasionally other parts ofthe world. 3. As Executive Producer of "Folk Music & Beyond", my duties include: choosing the topics and guests presented on the program, booking guests on the program, being aware offmformiog myself of/reading up on issues important to the music-listening community, researclring topics and preparing for interviews, editing interviews and pre-producing programs for broadcast, and submitting a list ofprogram topics to KALW management for publication in the quarterly KALW program guide. 4.
