The nomination was received for the ensemble’s recording of Gerald Barry’s zany operatic setting of The Importance Of Being Earnest. Commenting on the accolade, BCMG Artistic Director Stephen Newbould said: “What an end to 2015 we had! We’re over the moon at this Grammy nomination. Our con- gratulations extend, of course, to Gerald Barry for his extraordinary score, to Thomas Adés for his masterful con- ducting, and to NMC Recordings for having the foresight to record and release the work for us all to enjoy. For Birmingham Contemporary Music Group to be listed amongst prestigious artists gives genuine recognition to the quality of our work on an international stage.” The Grammy Awards take place on 15 February. The GUEST LIST 1983 - 2006 Greyhound, Weston Green Oct. 1983 - Jan. 1985 Hand and Spear, Weybridge Feb. 1985 - Sept. 1987 Ram Club, Foley Arms, Claygate Oct. 1987 - present www.theramclub.co.uk Compiled by Steve & Diane Poole Once Upon a Time … The Ram Folk Club has run most Fridays (give or take the odd Christmas, Good Fridays and Augusts) since October 1983. And soon we’ll be 25 years young. Just like the 60s, many of us were there but can’t remember much about the early years apart from the fact that we had a spiffing time. From the mid-90s to the present day - let’s call this period A.D. (‘After Digitalisation’) - we have a full record of our guests, thanks to the efforts of our resident IT expert Graham Gurrin, who created the website. In fact, we were one of the first clubs to have one of these new-fangled things (as opposed to the traditional web sites that have hung unmolested in our rafters since we came here) …which brings us to the period B.C. (‘Before Computers’). Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient papyrus of the early gospels known as ‘The Ram Page’ got lost somewhere along the road to Damascus. Typewriters of the day did not have memories, less so the scribes. And if only there was an ‘undo’ button in life..... The club was started at the Greyhound pub in Weston Green in October 1983 by Brian and Jane Ravenhill, and continued for many successful years under their stewardship (with help from others), moving briefly to Weybridge before finding its spiritual home here at the Foley Arms in 1987.

A mutual desire to play English country music led John and Sue to muscle in, and by early 1974 Umps & Dumps had taken over, with the addition of oboe and concertina. Sue switched to hammered dulcimer in 1975. John Tams left in 1976 and now plays in The Albion Band. Alan joined in 1977 after working with Tufty and Sue as Hammer & Tongs. Ian Harris also plays with Six Hands in Tempo. Tufty Swift also plays as Tufty Swift. Derek Pearce also plays with Roaring Jelly, Excelsior and Scaramouch & Co. Sue Harris also plays as Sue Harris and dances as Martha Rhoden. John Kirkpatrick plays with anybody.

This updated archive celebrates our 30 years of our existence as an epicentre of Folk and Acoustic music. None of us remember much of the very early days, but gradually more bits and pieces have come to light. When we originally put together this archive for our 20th birthday we were a bit stuck! Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient papyrus of the early gospels and pronouncements of who did what when got lost somewhere along the way. Typewriters of the day did not have memories, less so the scribes. And then - that flash of inspiration! We remembered that we have always advertised in Folk London. Sheila Finn, the editor at the time, very kindly went through all the back issues to tell us who our guests had been, and we are eternally grateful for her efforts. Updating the last ten years has been easy, thanks to computers and our webmaster and IT expert Neil Poole. Now it’s all safely stored for future folkeologists to marvel at, and beamed to all corners of the earth and beyond. We have moved with the times too, and we now spread our missives via FaceBook, Twitter and our YouTube channel.

  • Diary Notes 2018 1St January 2018
Diary Notes 2018 1st January 2018: this page has been rebuilt as the previous 'edition' seemed unstable. Hopefully the previous years are displayed as PDF links above and we can move on. As ever the year began with a lot of fiery bangs waking us from our early night! Morris Dancing at Snape Plough and Sail : two of the promised sides made it, the others suffering from ailment as a consequence of which their attendance was not viable, although a few of the healthy folk did arrive to view the spectacle of Danegeld Morris and Pretty Grim pacing out alternately. A bit of a stretch on energy resources to fill the two hours allocated, and the audience had largely sought warmth elsewhere after about an hour. Honour must be satisfied and the show went on. We popped over to the Eel's Foot at Eastbridge where Bill's son Rowan works and enjoyed a cup of tea and a pizza, (for the latter, thanks R), before returning home. The year has started. 2nd January 2018: Bill prepped and posted a couple of videos of Pretty Grim and Danegeld morris from yesterday's dance out, similar to lots of others but of the moment. Bill'nSheila had a run through of some songs as potential for tomorrow's sets at the Carlford Moot at Kirton. JohnG posted a picture of us from last time which we hadn't seen before, (Bill is smiling!) Hard to conceive that 15 years of musical diary and occasional opinion piece are now posted on this page, or that 1084 YouTube videos are up there (searchable)! Rob N rang about possible involvement in a project for a music student from Colchester which sounds interesting.
