Guest List 1983 - 2006 The GUEST LIST 1983 - 2006 Greyhound, Weston Green Oct. 1983 - Jan. 1985 Hand and Spear, Weybridge Feb. 1985 - Sept. 1987 Ram Club, Foley Arms, Claygate Oct. 1987 - present www.theramclub.co.uk Compiled by Steve & Diane Poole Once Upon a Time … The Ram Folk Club has run most Fridays (give or take the odd Christmas, Good Fridays and Augusts) since October 1983. And soon we’ll be 25 years young. Just like the 60s, many of us were there but can’t remember much about the early years apart from the fact that we had a spiffing time. From the mid-90s to the present day - let’s call this period A.D. (‘After Digitalisation’) - we have a full record of our guests, thanks to the efforts of our resident IT expert Graham Gurrin, who created the website. In fact, we were one of the first clubs to have one of these new-fangled things (as opposed to the traditional web sites that have hung unmolested in our rafters since we came here) …which brings us to the period B.C. (‘Before Computers’). Like the Dead Sea Scrolls, the ancient papyrus of the early gospels known as ‘The Ram Page’ got lost somewhere along the road to Damascus. Typewriters of the day did not have memories, less so the scribes. And if only there was an ‘undo’ button in life..... The club was started at the Greyhound pub in Weston Green in October 1983 by Brian and Jane Ravenhill, and continued for many successful years under their stewardship (with help from others), moving briefly to Weybridge before finding its spiritual home here at the Foley Arms in 1987. The detail of the early days is just a vague but pleasant fuzzy glow, but memories are more important as we get on and feel the need to reminisce, and at our 20th birthday we had only the odd framed flyer and poster to remind us of these early years. We tried RAM therapy (Recovered Absent Memories) using Young’s Special and Shiraz as an aid, but succeeded only in generating False Memory Syndrome and acrimonious accusations of missed rounds from long ago. And then - a rare spark of inspiration. The club has always advertised in Folk London so let’s ask its editor Sheila Finn! We can only say ‘thank you’ to her for her efforts. Now BC is AD and it’s all safely stored for future folkaeologists to marvel at, and for our posterity too as we slowly metamorphose into The Ram Rest Home for Retired Gentlefolkies…. The club is now run by a small but enthusiastic herd of regulars. We don’t have a committee, God forbid - it just ‘happens’. We have a loyal and evolving clientele - ie you - and, we like to think, a great atmosphere. All this stuff triggers lots of memories of classic nights (and some perhaps not so). It’s amazing to see the sheer variety of guests who have been on, many of whom are still going and quite a few who got lost along the way or have sadly left us. So here it all is if you fancy a trip down Memory Lane. There are one or two gaps, so if you have a photographic recall of event please put us right. Meanwhile we can all look forward to many more ‘unforgettable’ nights to come. ….and thank YOU for your support. Keep coming! “I am one of the last of a small tribe of troubadours who still believe that life is a beautiful and exciting journey with a purpose and grace well worth singing about.” E Y Harburg Purpose + Grace started as a list of songs and a list of possible guests. It is a wide mixture of material, from a traditional song I first heard 50 years ago, other songs that have been with me for decades, waiting to be arranged, to new original songs. You stand in a long line when you perform songs like this, you honour the ancestors, but hopefully the songs become, if only briefly your own, or a part of you. To call on my friends and peers to make this recording has been a great pleasure. Turning the two lists into a coherent whole was joyous. On previous recordings I’ve invited guest musicians to play their instruments, here, I asked singers for their unique contributions to these songs. Accompanying song has always been my favourite occupation, so it made perfect sense to have vocal and instrumental collaborations. In 1976 I had just released my first album and had been picked up by a heavy, old school music business manager whose avowed intent was to make me a star. I was not averse to the concept, and went straight from small folk clubs to opening shows for Steeleye Span at the biggest halls in the country. Early the next year June Tabor asked me if I would accompany her on tour. I was ecstatic and duly reported to my manager, who told me I was a star and didn’t play for other people.

  • A Cappella Vocals As Exciting As Any Complex
APRIL 21 – THE TEACUPS ■ “A cappella vocals as exciting as any complex instrumental fusion” An exhilarating evening of high-energy harmonies is guaranteed as this unaccompanied foursome blast their way through a set made up of traditional and contemporary songs. The Guardian says they are “a reminder that a cappella vocals can be as exciting as any complex instrumental fusion” and they have been wowing festival audiences. Alex Cumming, Kate Locksley, Rosie Calvert and Will Finn will be bringing with them their fun approach to singing, as well as their acclaimed debut album “One For The Pot”. £10 members/£11 non-members www.theteacups.co.uk APRIL 28 – OCOTILLO ■ Delightful fusion of Kirsty McGee and Robert Garson's special talents Ocotillo is the perfect transatlantic fusion of Kirsty McGee's dusty, soulful vocals and Robert Garson's bluesy, gravelly tones performing songs they describe as “from the city and the desert”. Leaning towards an American “smoke-filled room” atmosphere, their voices evoke the textures of 1930s jazz, treading a line between Americana and jazz swing balladry with a nod to Cole Porter and Tom Waits. £10 members/£11 non-members www.kirstymcgee.com MAY 5 – DAN WALSH ■ “The real deal”, “an inspiration”, “consistently brilliant”, “breathtaking” Virtuoso playing, a lovely singing voice and inspired songwriting make Dan one of the hottest acts around. He was nominated for the Best Musician prize at last year's BBC folk awards and is acknowledged as one of the country's – perhaps the world's – finest exponents of the banjo. He has been called “the real deal”, “an inspiration”, “ consistently brilliant” and “breathtaking”.

And someone has suddenly taken notice, and that’s okay. A bit of profile isn’t gonna hurt us — and I say us, the plural, for the folk scene — isn’t gonna hurt us at all.” In the same year as Carthy’s moment of recognition, something happened that did hurt the folk scene. Topic Records 80th Anniversary Start time: 8pm Running time: 2 hours 40 minutes with interval Please note all timings are approximate and subject to change Martin Aston discusses the history behind the world’s oldest independent label ahead of this collaborative performance. When Topic Records made its debut in 1939 with Paddy Ryan’s ‘The Man That Waters The Workers’ Beer’, an accordion-backed diatribe against capitalist businessmen who underpay their employees, it’s unlikely that anyone involved was thinking of the future – certainly not to 2019, when the label celebrates its 80th birthday. In any case, the future would have seemed very precarious in 1939, given the outbreak of World War II, during which Topic ceased most activity (shellac was particularly hard to source). But post-1945, the label made good on its original brief: ‘To use popular music to educate and inform and improve the lot of the working man,’ explains David Suff, the current spearhead of the world’s oldest independent label – and the undisputed home of British folk music. Tonight at the Barbican (where Topic held their 60th birthday concerts), musical director Eliza Carthy – part of the Topic recording family since 1997, though her parents Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy have been members since the sixties and seventies respectively - has marshalled a line-up to reflect the passing decades, which hasn’t been without its problems. ‘We have far too much material, given it’s meant to be a two-hour show!’ she says. ‘It’s impossible to represent 80 years – you’re talking about the left-wing leg, the archival leg, the many different facets of society - not just communists but farmers and factory workers - and the folk scene in the Fifties, the Sixties, the Seventies..

Issue 58 May 2016 FREE upporting ocal rts & erformers Last month ended on yet another sad musical note as Prince left this plane, if indeed he ever inhabited the same one as us mere mortals. Certainly not everyone's cup of Darjeeling but few could deny his supranatural talents whether in writing, playing, performing or inspiring; he was often cited as one of the most underrated guitarists, probably only though because he was so good at almost everything else. Tis a cliché but his like will certainly not be seen again: Sometimes It Snows In April indeed. MAY2016 On a brighter note April also saw a record-breaking (not literally hopefully) Record Store Day as local shops outdid themselves, despite some unfortunates queueing outside Rise in Worcester having to contend with snow flurries. The tills were SLAP MAGAZINE red hot though so we are told and business was more than brisk with no sign of the record (not 'vinyl' please) boom Unit 3a, Lowesmoor Wharf, slowing down any time soon. You can read and see much more Worcester WR1 2RS about what was an absolutely storming day, in Duncan Graves' Telephone: 01905 26660 review and photo spread on page 23. [email protected] And so we march into May (or it may still be March for all I know) somewhat trepidatiously: "Ne'er cast a clout til May is For advertising enquiries, please contact: out" goes the old farmers' saying; clout being yer coat not a [email protected] wallop! But the grass is ever growing as the festival season begins in earnest with The Beltane Bash, Cheltenham Jazz, EDITORIAL Mark Hogan - Editor Beat it!, Mello, Out To Grass, Wychwood, Breaking Bands, Winchcombe, Lechade, Tenbury and Lunar all imminent.
