“I am one of the last of a small tribe of troubadours who still believe that life is a beautiful and exciting journey with a purpose and grace well worth singing about.” E Y Harburg Purpose + Grace started as a list of songs and a list of possible guests. It is a wide mixture of material, from a traditional song I first heard 50 years ago, other songs that have been with me for decades, waiting to be arranged, to new original songs. You stand in a long line when you perform songs like this, you honour the ancestors, but hopefully the songs become, if only briefly your own, or a part of you. To call on my friends and peers to make this recording has been a great pleasure. Turning the two lists into a coherent whole was joyous. On previous recordings I’ve invited guest musicians to play their instruments, here, I asked singers for their unique contributions to these songs. Accompanying song has always been my favourite occupation, so it made perfect sense to have vocal and instrumental collaborations. In 1976 I had just released my first album and had been picked up by a heavy, old school music business manager whose avowed intent was to make me a star. I was not averse to the concept, and went straight from small folk clubs to opening shows for Steeleye Span at the biggest halls in the country. Early the next year June Tabor asked me if I would accompany her on tour. I was ecstatic and duly reported to my manager, who told me I was a star and didn’t play for other people. -

TOMMY FLEMING BIOGRAPHY With his powerfully distinctive voice, Tommy Fleming has been described as the “Voice of Ireland”. Today Tommy is one of Ireland’s top entertainers with over 6.5 million YouTube hits and over 3.5 million album sales worldwide. The youngest of six children, Tommy was born in 1971 in Aclare, County Sligo. His natural singing ability was evident at a young age whilst participating in local talent competitions. While still at school, Tommy formed his first rock band, The Face of February, and embarked on gigging in local pubs. After leaving school Tommy joined a quartet, Jarog, gaining a legion of fans. However, despite this success, record companies weren’t exactly knocking on Tommy’s door. Then a chance encounter with renowned producer and composer Phil Coulter changed all that. In July 1993, Phil heard Tommy performing at a charity event in Westport, County Mayo. Within days Tommy was guesting with Phil and his orchestra at the Opera House (Cork), the National Concert Hall (Dublin) and The University Concert Hall (Limerick). Four months later he was playing to huge audiences across the US and Canada, culminating in two shows in the Boston Symphony Hall and the legendary Carnegie Hall in New York. Tommy’s career then took another leap forward when he was invited by Galway traditional group De Danann, to join them as lead vocalist, following in the footsteps of living legends as Mary Black, Maura O’Connell, Dolores Keane and Paul Brady. The collaboration lasted three years and introduced Tommy to a worldwide audience touring Australia, Hong Kong, China and the US. -

Exploring the Musical Traditions of County Leitrim & County Fermanagh In May 2020 Irish Arts Foundation launched a pioneering research programme. It centred on specific regional playing styles and influences within Irish traditional music originating from rural communities around the border counties of: Leitrim in the Republic of Ireland and Fermanagh in Northern Ireland. Themes 1. Regional identity. 2. Local musical traditions in Co. Leitrim and Fermanagh. 3. The families and individuals who kept the music alive, and their legacy today. Regional Identity In the time of the horse and cart - the ‘candle to bed’ age - each village, town and county had its own tunes and dances; a musical accent and dialect. This was due to relative rural isolation. So despite the close proximity of Co. Leitrim and Fermanagh, distinct regional identities - musical, religious and political – formed. When talking about regional identity and style there will always be generalisations; tunes do not carry passports and music has never been constrained by borders. Despite this, we will look at what can be widely termed, a Leitrim and a Fermanagh musical tradition. County Leitrim Leitrim is in the province of Connacht and part of the Border Region. Its largest town is Carrick-on-Shannon with a population of 3,134. Although one of Ireland’s smallest counties, Leitrim has a distinct musical tradition of flute and fiddle music. We will look at some of the individuals and groups who have shaped the Leitrim style of traditional music. Leitrim Flute Music “Co. Sound recording in the British folk revival: ideology, discourse and practice, 1950–1975 Matthew Ord Submitted in fulfilment of the degree of PhD International Centre for Music Studies Newcastle University March 2017 Abstract Although recent work in record production studies has advanced scholarly understandings of the contribution of sound recording to musical and social meaning, folk revival scholarship in Britain has yet to benefit from these insights. The revival’s recording practice took in a range of approaches and contexts including radio documentary, commercial studio productions and amateur field recordings. This thesis considers how these practices were mediated by revivalist beliefs and values, how recording was represented in revivalist discourse, and how its semiotic resources were incorporated into multimodal discourses about music, technology and traditional culture. Chapters 1 and 2 consider the role of recording in revivalist constructions of traditional culture and working class communities, contrasting the documentary realism of Topic’s single-mic field recordings with the consciously avant-garde style of the BBC’s Radio Ballads. The remaining three chapters explore how the sound of recorded folk was shaped by a mutually constitutive dialogue with popular music, with recordings constructing traditional performance as an authentic social practice in opposition to an Americanised studio sound equated with commercial/technological mediation. As the discourse of progressive rock elevated recording to an art practice associated with the global counterculture, however, opportunities arose for the incorporation of rock studio techniques in the interpretation of traditional song in the hybrid genre of folk-rock. Changes in studio practice and technical experiments with the semiotics of recorded sound experiments form the subject of the final two chapters. -

Morris dancing is always (or almost always) performed with live music. This means that musicians are an essential part of any morris team. If you are reading this document, it is probably because you are a musician (or potential musician) for a morris dance team. Good morris musicians are not always easy to find. In the words of Jinky Wells (1868– 1953), the great Bampton dancer and fiddler: . [My grandfather, George Wells] never had no trouble to get the dancers but the trouble was sixty, seventy years ago to get the piper or the fiddler—the musician. -

June Tabor Ask June Tabor about the cinematic image and she'll talk with wonder of the relentless rain in Seven Samurai, Max Schreck's terrifying shadow on the castle wall in Nosferatu, or the first shimmering sight of Sherif Ali on the desert horizon in Lawrence of Arabia. She finds such powerful images in songs too - they are her inspiration, and she paints them vividly with her voice so that they take root in the subconcious. 2012 was a good year for June Tabor. She was named BBC Folk Awards Singer of the Year for the second time this century, and her recent partnership with Oysterband won three more of the year's most coveted prizes. It's the Ragged Kingdom album with the Oysters that has occupied June for the past two years, which means she's been touring in 'rock' mode, away from the more intimate intensity of her own solo concerts for some time. These March 2013 dates mark her return to the kind of performances that she feels most at home with: in 'listening' venues, where her singing can take hold of the imagination, and the warmth of her presentation lead listeners along the storyteller's path. June is joined by three of the musicians who combined on her most recent solo album, Ashore (2011): pianist Huw Warren, accordionist Andy Cutting and viola player Mark Emerson: all experienced Tabor-accompanists who know how to give June the space to sing and provide the depth which she exploits so beautifully.
