“I am one of the last of a small tribe of troubadours who still believe that life is a beautiful and exciting journey with a purpose and grace well worth singing about.” E Y Harburg Purpose + Grace started as a list of songs and a list of possible guests. It is a wide mixture of material, from a traditional song I first heard 50 years ago, other songs that have been with me for decades, waiting to be arranged, to new original songs. You stand in a long line when you perform songs like this, you honour the ancestors, but hopefully the songs become, if only briefly your own, or a part of you. To call on my friends and peers to make this recording has been a great pleasure. Turning the two lists into a coherent whole was joyous. On previous recordings I’ve invited guest musicians to play their instruments, here, I asked singers for their unique contributions to these songs. Accompanying song has always been my favourite occupation, so it made perfect sense to have vocal and instrumental collaborations. In 1976 I had just released my first album and had been picked up by a heavy, old school music business manager whose avowed intent was to make me a star. I was not averse to the concept, and went straight from small folk clubs to opening shows for Steeleye Span at the biggest halls in the country. Early the next year June Tabor asked me if I would accompany her on tour. I was ecstatic and duly reported to my manager, who told me I was a star and didn’t play for other people.

  • Russell A. Kahmann [email protected] Modal Ambiguity and the Hybrid Mode in the Music of Gryphon Presented at the 2008 Meet
Kahmann, MTMW Presentation Russell A. Kahmann [email protected] Modal Ambiguity and the Hybrid Mode in the Music of Gryphon Presented at the 2008 meeting of the Music Theory Midwest Conference 1 Kahmann, MTMW Presentation During the time following the British and American folk revivals (c. 1955-1975)1 and at the height of the progressive rock movement (early and mid-1970’s), the British band Gryphon entered the musical scene with its self-titled debut album, Gryphon (1973). The album contained folk songs and arrangements of traditional tunes that highlight the early music influences of the founding band members. Throughout the next three albums, the music of Gryphon underwent a rapid development of style, timbre, and harmonic language. Examples 1 and 2 in the handout illustrate the changes that occurred in band membership and instrumentation. One specific aspect of Gryphon’s harmonic language will be examined today through analysis of three compositions, taken from the albums Gryphon, Midnight Mushrumps, and Raindance. Although much of Gryphon’s music utilizes the Ionian mode and harmonic minor scale, in sections of modal ambiguity, the band pulled from a distinct collection of pitches that draws upon inflections from multiple modes. It is this hybrid mode that will be examined here today. Before presenting any analysis, I feel it necessary to present a brief history of the band’s founding members; their diverse musical backgrounds play a role in aspects of the band’s harmonic language. Gryphon began as a trio, with members Richard Harvey, Brian Gulland, and Graeme Taylor.2 Richard Harvey was trained in clarinet, theory, harmony, and choral singing as 3 4 a youth and studied clarinet at the Royal College of Music in London.

  • And a Letter to My Customers ===
--- == ROOTS & RHYTHM - SALE 01/12/2014 - AND A LETTER TO MY CUSTOMERS === --- Dear Friends Happy New Year! We hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. NOTE: Regrettably our holiday season was the slowest we've ever seen and it may mean that we will not be able to continue operating our business for very much longer. I am no longer a young man (not by a long shot!) and don't have the energy to pursue ways in which we may be able to promote the business. I would love to be able to settle down and listen to all the music I have gathered over the years in a relaxed setting and with critical reviewing faculties turned off. I would love to see Roots & Rhythm continue and thrive and even if we make it through the current crisis I would still like to get away from the stress of running a business so I am open to having someone else take over and move the company forward. If you are such a person or know such a person please contact me and we can discuss it. This list consists of a sale which we hope will raise enough money to help us get caught up with our suppliers and our taxes as well as some other pressing expenses. This list features 600 titles in all covering all the genres of music we specialize in and featuring books, DVDs and compact discs. This list includes manufacturer?s overstocks and deletions, our own excess inventory and a lot of titles that have been sitting on our shelves that have never been listed before.
