Please allow me to express my deep respect for your continuing efforts toward the realization of everlasting world peace amid today's harsh international conditions. As I am sure you are aware, thjsAjugusJjyhe Cityof Hiroshima, with the participation of Hiroshima citizens and individuals from all walks of life, will hold the Peace Memorial Ceremony to comfort the souls of those people whose lives were lost due to the atomic bombing here, as well as to pray for the realization of everlasting peace. We are deeply grateful for the fact that you dispatched as your representative to last year's Ceremony Mr. Nobuyasu Abe, then UN Under-Secretary-General for Disarmament Affairs. Last year at both the NPT Review Conference and the High-Level Plenary Meeting of the 60th United Nations General Assembly, negotiations for nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament were held between many countries. However, as before the fear of nuclear proliferation grows daily, and humanity finds itself in an increasingly serious crisis created by weapons of mass destruction. In this situation, we believe that the mission of Hiroshima is to appeal across the globe for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of everlasting world peace. For these reasons, we would be honored were you to deliver an address and offer a wreath of flowers at this year's Peace Memorial Ceremony, and believe that these actions would serve as an important symbol of the appeal for eternal world peace and have a major impact on the international community. Each of Hiroshima's approximately 1.15 million citizens would be honored to have you join us at this year's ceremony. Furthermore, your attendance would lift the spirits of the many atomic bomb survivors and families of the deceased.
