  • LABOUR and TECHNOLOGY in the CAR INDUSTRY. Ford Strategies in Britain and Brazil
LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY. Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil Elizabeth Bortolaia Silva Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD, Imperial College of Science and Technology University of London May 1988 LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil ABSTRACT This thesis looks at aspects of recent changes in international competition in the car industry. It examines the implications of the changes for the relationship between technology and work and it considers how strategies of multinational corporations interact with different national contexts. It is based on a case-study of the Ford Motor Company in its two largest factories in Britain and Brazil, Dagenham and São Bernardo. Chapter 1 describes existing theoretical approaches to comparative studies of technology and work, criticizes technological and cultural determinist approaches and argues for a method that draws on a 'historical regulation' approach. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 describe the long-term background and recent shifts in the pattern of international competition in the motor industry. In particular they look at important shifts in the late 1970s and 1980s and at Ford's changes in management structure and product strategy designed to meet these challenges. Chapter 5 considers recent debates on international productivity comparisons and presents a fieldwork-based comparison of the production process at Dagenham and São Bernardo. The description shows the importance of issues other than technology in determining the flexibility and quality of production. In different national contexts, 2 different mixes of technology and labour can produce comparable results. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 look at the national and local contexts of industrial relations in the two countries to throw light on the different patterns of change observed in the factories.

  • Laurel Racing Camaro
Laurel Racing Camaro History The story of the Laurel Racing 1970 Camaro begins in 1968. In 1968 and 1969, Laurel Racing successfully campaigned a 1968 Camaro in Trans Am, A Sedan, and endurance races. As a result of this success, in 1970, Chevrolet Product Performance offered to support Laurel Racing’s effort in Chevrolet’s new “second generation” Camaro. Chevrolet had achieved great success in the Trans Am series with its first generation Camaro. When the second generation Camaro was introduced, the “Win on Sunday. Sell on Monday” philosophy led Chevrolet to offer its top performing teams new second generation Camaros. Based on this commitment, Larry Drover, owner of Laurel Racing offered his 1968 Camaro for sale. To sell his “first generation” Camaro, Larry placed a classified ad in Autoweek. The text of Larry’s advertisement read: Trans Am Camaro. Very competitive. Full roll cage, 1969 engine, all new suspension, mags, all possible factory options, extra wheels, 4 gear ratios, extra engine if desired. Preparing 1970 automobile. Laurel Racing, 3220 Rexford Drive, South Bend, IN 46615. (219) 234-2535 Autoweek, September 20, 1969 The Laurel Racing “first generation” Camaro at the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona. Note that the Camaro is a 1968, but it is sporting a 1969 cowl induction crossram hood. Later, the front body panels would also be converted to the 1969 versions. February 2, 1969. Photo: Louis Galanos. In 1969, Chevrolet won the Trans Am manufacturer’s championship. The “factory team” was Penske Racing with Mark Donohue the primary driver. After winning the T/A championship, Roger Penske announced that, for 1970, Penske Racing would compete in the T/A championship with AMC Javelins.

We have succeeded in building this potential into your new Shelby, but to what degree it’s utilized will depend largely on you as the owner and driver. Even the most skilled drivers, the real pros, always take time to completely familiarize themselves with a new piece of equipment. They also know the importance of proper maintenance, based on the intended use of their vehicle. Take a tip from them and do the same. A little time spent here will pay off later in added miles of trouble free operation, overall performance and great driving pleasure.

  • Kenosha Engine Plant Investigation and Cleanup
Kenosha Engine Plant Investigation & Cleanup RR-894 February 2017 The former Chrysler Engine Plant property is located in the heart of Kenosha in southeast Wisconsin. The plant first opened for automobile production in 1902 under Thomas B. Jeffery and was part of Kenosha’s long-standing history in auto manufacturing, later housing Nash Motors and American Motors Company. The Kenosha Engine Plant property is 107 acres in size. Approximately 3,700 residential-related properties – of which 2,400 are single-family homes – and eight schools are located within one-half mile of the plant. Its general boundaries are: 52nd Street to the north; 60th Street to the south; 24th Avenue to the east; and 30th Avenue to the west. Over the years, a series of mergers and buyouts changed the company name several times – Nash Motors, Nash- Kelvinator and American Motors are a few examples. Eventually the Chrysler Corporation bought the site, and in 1998 Chrysler itself was bought by DaimlerAG, which owned the site until 2007, when Cerberus Capital Management bought the company. After manufacturing automobiles and automobile parts for over 100 years, the plant was a casualty of the 2009 recession and was shut down in the fall of 2010, after the A sign describing the history of auto production in Chrysler Corporation declared bankruptcy. Old Carco, a liquidation bankruptcy trust, owned the property after the Chrysler bankruptcy proceedings were finalized in May 2010. A settlement agreement, filed in the US Bankruptcy Court in October 2011, was reached with the state of Wisconsin, the city of Kenosha, the United States Government, JP Morgan Chase Bank (the first lien holder of the property), and the Old Carco Liquidation Trust.
