The first step in selecting your panel(s) for your camping experience is to determine your usage. This might also be a good time to evaluate whether or not you really need to run that air conditioner or watch the big television in the RV. Going without some luxuries on your camping trip will help to minimize your need for electricity, providing cost savings and a less complicated setup process. Solar panels are rated in watts, or the unit of power equal to amps multiplied by DC volts. When calculating output, it is also necessary to account for inefficiencies/losses inherent in any system. Assuming 67% efficiency, an 80-watt panel will realistically deliver about 4.5 amps at 12V DC: 80W ÷ 12V x 0.67 = 4.5A Over the course of 10 hours of glorious sunshine, that equates to 45 amp-hours delivered to your camper’s battery. If you tend to deplete your 100 amp-hour battery in two days time, then a single 80-watt panel soaking up the sun’s rays for ten hours each of those two days, should come close to meeting your electrical requirements. (The North- ern Camper, August 2011). Some electricity usage is predictable. For example, our re- frigerator’s electronic controls draw1.5 amps continuously. Over the course of 24 hours, we know that we need 36 amp-hours dedicated to operating those controls. The best route for an amateur who wants to go solar is to enlist the help of an expert. Even supplementing your electrical needs with solar is a great way to get started toward a 100% transition to clean, quiet energy for your camping experience. North American Porcupine Have you ever been told to stay away from por- cupines because they will shoot you with their quills? I have; however, that is an old wives tale. The truth is that porcupines only look scary. They are not violent unless they feel threatened. The porcupine is a nocturnal rodent. It is covered with dark brown fur with yellow hints to it. Rocks Have Roots A recent rock hunting trip to Stur- geon Bay, Michigan was a way to bring me back to my roots of rock hunting. Driving through you enter a world where time runs a little slower. Upon entering the bay area you realize this is a very tranquil and quiet place—a large play area on weekends for locals and tourist, but open enough area to stake out your own relaxing place. The sandy shore line gives way to the rocky water’s edge, perfect for a walk on the sandy shore line, but rocky enough at the water’s edge to reach into ankle deep water for a bed of rocks. It is not like

some beaches that are heav- ily laden with rocks where it is uneasy to walk the shoreline. It is very family- friendly. I have learned over the years publishing a specific place for rock hunting is like advertising where your favorite fishing hole or your lucky mushroom spot are. The place will soon become depleted. However, Sturgeon Bay is more of a vacation spot than a major collection place. It is north of where one will find Petoskey stones so it is sel- dom visited by commercial collectors. It was interesting to learn a little bit of the history of Cross Village and see an extremely large log on the beach that was once used for a port. This log was a highlight for the young ones to climb. Ending the day at Legs Inn, a local restaurant, is a must for anyone going through this area. They have good Polish food as well as an amazing collection of drift wood that decorates the rooms. About 50 percent of the bay is white dolomite rocks that have turned into well rounded pebbles. This paradise was revealed to me by the Nixon family. I am very thankful l to them for showing me this “new found” place. It was in celebration of a birthday party that delivered us to Sturgeon Bay. The rocks collected here ended up being used in a land- ing step off a porch at the Nixon’s Topinabee cottage. Some old chimney blocks from their cottage were recy- cled into a step and the holes from the flue were filled with stepping rocks. It was soon discovered that more rocks were needed to complete the project at hand. The very next day a trip to Cross Village beach (just south of Sturgeon Bay) turned into a family event, searching for the remaining rocks to finish the stairs. Cross Village Beach was a rockier beach. The stones were bigger mak- ing it harder to stroll down the beach shore. Having tender feet myself, I wore my water shoes. Beside a nice family day at the beach, it was amaz- ing to see how everyone pitched in to gather the perfect round smooth rock

For those not convinced, Beryl assures, “The SUPs are so easy that anyone can use them.” Sleeping Bear has the added advantage of having the big lake on one side of them and a small inland lake on the other. This gives people the opportunity to try out the SUP before hitting the waves. As one of the sponsors of the TC Waterman Chal- lenge and Expo, Beryl suggests checking it out on August 18 in Traverse City. The SUP festival includes free product demonstrations and SUP clinics. If the idea of getting on a SUP sounds intriguing, but you’re still sitting on shore, give one of these folks a call. They will get you standing up and paddling like a pro! 
