Snyder: Suicide Bend 6 (20MT158) an Archaeological Investigation on the Manistee River The Huron-Manistee National Forests heritage staff conducted a Phase II archaeological evaluation of the Late Woodland site 20MT158, located on the Manistee River, Manistee County, Michigan. 20MT158 consists of a core and biface manufacturing site situated on the east edge of a strath-terrace overlooking the river. The purpose of this evaluation was to determine overall site integrity, determine site function, ascertain a specific cultural tradition or phase beyond Late Woodland, and make a National Register of Historic Places eligibility determination. A historical context was developed in order to address the regional issue of whether or not Canadian-Carolinian Biotic transition zone Late Woodland subsistence-settlement system strategies could be identified. Results from studying terrace geomorphology and lithic analysis revealed that the occupants used technological organization strategies during their seasonal migration round. 20MT158 acted as a staging area were mobile tool kits were refurbished before undertaking the next segment of the seasonal journey. 2 Acknowledgement I would first like to thank my thesis advisor Professor Mark Muñiz of the College of Liberal Arts at St. Cloud State University. Scarborough ABSTRACT Miami Fort, located in southwestern Ohio, is a multicomponent hilltop earthwork approximately nine kilometers in length. Detailed geological analyses demonstrate that the earthwork was a complex gravity-fed hydraulic structure, which channeled spring waters and surface runoff to sites where indigenous plants and cultigens were grown in a highly fertile but drought prone loess soil. Drill core sampling, x-ray diffractometry, high-resolution magnetic susceptibility analysis, and radiocarbon dating demonstrate that the earthwork was built after the Holocene Climatic Optimum and before the Medieval Warming Period. The results of this study suggest that these and perhaps other southern Ohio hilltop earthworks are hydraulic structures rather than fortifications.

Batanian Department of Community Sustainability, Michigan State University April 2015 Introduction In late July 2014, we initiated a survey of residents in the Grand Traverse Bay Watershed as part of a larger project exploring implications of climate change in the region and opportunities for adaptation at community and watershed levels. Early scientific and policy discussions about climate change focused largely on gradual warming planet-wide, its causes, and its impacts. In recent years, however, discussions have become more nuanced and reveal a greater understanding of the many ways in which climate change will affect weather patterns generally, as well as many biotic and abiotic resources specifically. Various types of data collected in the Grand Traverse Bay (GTB) region show evidence of changes in the environment driven by shifts in climate conditions and the resulting weather patterns. Our survey asked residents what, if any, changes they have observed in a series of factors influenced by climate such as frequency and duration of rain events, ice cover on lakes, and length of growing season. We also asked a series of questions about perceptions of global warming, more generally. This report provides a summary of those survey results. Analysis of the survey data is underway to explore a number of different questions. These analyses will be described briefly at the end of this report.

The trail runs from Station 100+00 (Tunxis Avenue, Route 189/187) at the north to Station 186+00 (Tunxis Avenue, Route 189/187) at the south (Figure 1). Most of the Base Phase, which measures 8,285 feet (2,524 meters) in length, will follow the former Connecticut Western/Central New England Rail Line. The trail is planned to be approximately 11 feet wide. A 50-foot-long prefabricated bridge will span Griffin Brook, at the location of a former railroad bridge which is no longer extant. The Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT), Office of Environmental Planning (OEP), reviewed the proposed project and noted that the project area, or Area of Potential Effect (APE), possesses pre-colonial Native American archaeological sensitivity, and contains rail-related historic resources that are potentially eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. ConnDOT recommended that a Phase IB subsurface reconnaissance survey be conducted along portions of the proposed trail under current design that are archaeologically sensitive. ConnDOT further recommended that the eligibility of historic-rail-related features for listing in the National Register of Historic Places be assessed.

The HMNF detennined that the proposed actions were "Likely to Adversely Affect" the norihern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis). We base the enclosed Opinion on information provided in several documents, including your northern long-eared project matrix and Biological Assessment, the Programmatic Biological Assessment and Opinion for the HMNF's Land and Resource Management Plan, and our April 1, 2015, Conference Opinion. Other sources ofinfonnation include previous telephone conversations, e-mails and meetings. A complete administrative record of this consultation is on file at our East Lansing Field Office. After reviewing the current status of northern long-eared bat, the environmental baseline for the action area, the effects of the proposed action, and the cumulative effects, it is our biological opinion that the action, as proposed, is not likely to jeopardize the continued existence of northern long-eared bat With respect to ESA compliance, all aspects of the project description are binding.
