Interviews with these students and with less-educated fellow islanders were taped to: 1) ascertain which aspects of the aboriginal belief structure, as preserved in oral tradition, have been most resistant to change; and, 2) an attempt to establish if the students are fairly representative of their traditional belief and value system despite their American-sponsored educations. Some of the findings were: that student belief in, and knowledge of the old mythological and cosmological constructs was generally low; that belief was high in magic, native medicine, and spirits; and that young and old alike were receptive to attempts at cultural preservations. The report contains a summary of the study, a discussion of study background, a description of methods used in collection of the folktales, analyses of the oral traditions, 16 references, and a bibliography containing over 100 entries.

    Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands First compiled by Nancy Sack and Gwen Sinclair Updated by Nancy Sack Current to January 2020 Library of Congress Subject Headings for the Pacific Islands Background An inquiry from a librarian in Micronesia about how to identify subject headings for the Pacific islands highlighted the need for a list of authorized Library of Congress subject headings that are uniquely relevant to the Pacific islands or that are important to the social, economic, or cultural life of the islands. We reasoned that compiling all of the existing subject headings would reveal the extent to which additional subjects may need to be established or updated and we wish to encourage librarians in the Pacific area to contribute new and changed subject headings through the Hawai‘i/Pacific subject headings funnel, coordinated at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.. We captured headings developed for the Pacific, including those for ethnic groups, World War II battles, languages, literatures, place names, traditional religions, etc. Headings for subjects important to the politics, economy, social life, and culture of the Pacific region, such as agricultural products and cultural sites, were also included. Scope Topics related to Australia, New Zealand, and Hawai‘i would predominate in our compilation had they been included. Accordingly, we focused on the Pacific islands in Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia (excluding Hawai‘i and New Zealand). Island groups in other parts of the Pacific were also excluded. References to broader or related terms having no connection with the Pacific were not included. Overview This compilation is modeled on similar publications such as Music Subject Headings: Compiled from Library of Congress Subject Headings and Library of Congress Subject Headings in Jewish Studies.

Honolulu: University of Hawaii Press, 2011. 294 pp. $55.00. Summoning the Powers Beyond is a very much welcomed addition to the growing body of literature concerning Micronesia. It will be of interest to both those who study the Pacific, and students of religion. The author, Jay Dobbin, is a Roman Catholic priest who holds doctoral degrees in anthropology and theology. The title page and author’s note recognize the contributions made by Francis X. Hezel, S.J., and the former director of the Micronesian Seminar. The book contains ten chapters, thirty-six pages of notes, sixteen pages of bibliography, and an eleven page index. A few figures and a photograph are provided. The first chapter, “Introductory Issues,” is subdivided into 6 sections. The first section, entitled “Micronesia as a Separate Cultural Area,” begins with the question of whether or not to treat Micronesia as a single region given its large expanse of ocean with different environments, its range of linguistic diversity, and the archaeological evidence regarding its various settlement patterns. Dobbin argues that despite the “great cultural diversity, there is also a sufficient degree of cultural similarity to allow us to speak of Micronesian religion or religions” (p. 3). In the second section, “The Need for this Work,” Dobbin briefly reviews previous studies that focused on Micronesia, noting that James G. Frazer’s work, The Belief in Immortality and the Worship of the Dead, vol. 3: The Belief among the Micronesians (1924) is the only previous book length study of the subject.

    “Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region” Study Report II / 1 English Translation 2012 World Heritage Promotion Committee of “Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region” Foreword “Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region” are our heritage consisting of Okinoshima Island, where state-related rituals were held from the late 4th century to the end of the 9th century, Munakata Taisha, a Shinto shrine that developed from the rituals on Okinoshima Island, and a group of mounded tombs associated with the Munakata clan and maritime people who undertook the rituals. Worship of Okinoshima Island and rituals at Munakata Taisha have been protected and passed down by local people of the Munakata region from ancient times to the present. The group of mounded tombs also remains in a good state of conservation, giving testimony to the characteristics of the place and people at that time. While we can learn many things from this property, we have the responsibility to pass down the value of this precious property to future generations. It was in this recognition that the World Heritage Promotion Committee of “Okinoshima Island and Related Sites in the Munakata Region” was set up in January 2009 to pursue World Heritage List inscription as a means to protect and pass down the value of this property. In order to achieve World Heritage List inscription, it is necessary to define the Outstanding Universal Value of the property. A study project started in order to verify the value of this property and Study Report I was published in the fiscal year 2010.

SKINNER © INTRODUCTION If one were to look at the whole of contemporary Pacific literature, Micronesian literature would stand out as unique, and when compared with works in the South Pacific, still in a developmental stage. A compilation of the creative writing of this region, to the best of my knowledge, has never been attempted. 'Vith those two thoughts in mind, I set out to make this bibliography valuable not only for the reader of Micronesian literature, but for the aspiring, indigenous Micronesian writer. This bibliography contains approximately 800 works published since World War II by nearly 400 indigenous and non-indigenous writers. Additionally, recently published interpretations of legends, myths and fables are included. The range should indicate an assessment of past accomplishments and suggest the future direction of literature in this region of the Pacific. COI'.'TEMPORARY MICRONESIAN LITERATURE: A I'REuMINARYBrnuOGRAPHY This project disputes the opinion of Pacific literature expert Ron Crocombe who said that "very little writing by islanders has , come out of ... the American territories" (Crocombe 1984: 4). On the contrary, it proves there is a substantial body of post-WWn indigenous literature from the Micronesian region. It is certainly true and significant, and this author agrees, that American cultural imperialism has been a "major factor in constraining local research, publication and other forms of expression" (Crocombe 1984: 8).
