Geography within a Historical Myth – Truth behind Noah’s Deluge Dr. Saswati Roy Assistant Professor, Sarsuna College, Calcutta University Prof. Malay Mukhopadhyay Former Head of the Geography Department Visva Bharati, Santiniketan Myths about great floods Mexico • There are a large number of Mesoamerican flood myths like the Nahua (central Mexico), Tarahumara (Northern Mexico), Michoacan (Mexico), Cora (east of the Huichols), Totonac (east of Mexico), Aztec Flood Myth and others. The great Maya civilization also have documentation of such a mythical flood. India • Satyavrata, the 7th Manu considered the first king to rule this earth, who saved mankind from the great flood — after being warned of it by the Matsya avatar of Vishnu, who had also advised him to build a giant boat. China • We can see those elements in the Chinese myth where Gong Gong, so ordered by the head of the gods, created a flood as a punishment for human misbehavior. It lasted 22 years, until the hero started to dam the waters. The hero was killed for this act, but from his corpse sprang a son who finished his father's project. Rome • The Greco-Roman story, recounted by Ovid, is another tale of collusion among the gods to punish evil humanity. Jupiter persuaded Neptune to flood all the earth except for the summit of Mt. Parnassus. THE MYTHICAL NOAH’S FLOOD The story most familiar to many people is the biblical account of Noah and his ark. Genesis (A chapter in Old Testament) tells how “God saw that the wickedness of man was great” and decided to destroy all of creation. -

Universal Mythology: Stories That Circle The World Lydia L. This installation is about mythology and the commonalities that occur between cultures across the world. According to folklorist Alan Dundes, myths are sacred narratives that explain the evolution of the world and humanity. He defines the sacred narratives as “a story that serves to define the fundamental worldview of a culture by explaining aspects of the natural world, and delineating the psychological and social practices and ideals of a society.” Stories explain how and why the world works and I want to understand the connections in these distant mythologies by exploring their existence and theories that surround them. This painting illustrates the connection between separate cultures through their polytheistic mythologies. It features twelve deities, each from a different mythology/religion. By including these gods, I have allowed for a diversified group of cultures while highlighting characters whose traits consistently appear in many mythologies. It has the Celtic supreme god, Dagda; the Norse trickster god, Loki; the Japanese moon god, Tsukuyomi; the Aztec sun god, Huitzilopochtli; the Incan nature goddess, Pachamama; the Egyptian water goddess, Tefnut; the Polynesian fire goddess, Mahuika; the Inuit hunting goddess, Arnakuagsak; the Greek fate goddesses, the Moirai: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos; the Yoruba love goddess, Oshun; the Chinese war god, Chiyou; and the Hindu death god, Yama. The painting was made with acrylic paint on mirror. Connection is an important element in my art, and I incorporate this by using the mirror to bring the audience into the piece, allowing them to see their reflection within the parting of the clouds, whilst viewing the piece. -

Chapter 3 Quiz What lead to Joseph Campbell's interest in comparative mythology? When Campbell was a child, he became fascinated with Native American Culture. This led him to a lifelong passion for myth and storytelling. When Campbell was studying maths and biology, he recognized that he is inclined towards humanities. Soon he became an English literature student at Columbia University. Campbell was interested in knowledge above all else. In 1924 Campbell traveled to Europe with his family. On the ship during his return trip, he encountered the Messiah elect of the Theosophical Society, Jiddu Krishnamurti. They discussed Indian philosophy which leads to Campbell’s interest in Hindu and Indian philosophy. Campbell studied Old French, Provencal and Sanskrit at the University of Paris and the University of Munich in Germany. He learned to read and speak French and German. When Campbell did not have any work after his graduation (in depression era), he used to read nine hours a day for five years. He soon discovered the works of Carl Jung who is the founder of analytical psychology. Campbell could recognize recurring patterns of all the stories he had read, from Carl Jung’s work. This must have encouraged Joseph Campbell in comparative mythology. How did Joseph Campbell become the world's foremost scholar on mythology? How did the Great Depression benefit his education? Joseph Campbell received BA in English literature and MA in Medieval literature from Columbia University. Campbell also received a fellowship from Columbia University to study in Europe. He studied Old French, Provencal and Sanskrit at the University of Paris and the University of Munich in Germany. -

Lewis Spence) I pen these words barely a week after Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast, uprooting over a million people, leaving hundreds of thousands homeless, tens of thousands stranded, and unknown hundreds dead. Most Americans, cast involuntarily in the role of passive participants, watched this tragedy unfold with the same sense of slow- mo horror, helplessness, and fatalistic fascination we experience in that instant before cars collide, transfixed by the seemingly endless stream of devastation, suffering, and death broadcast twenty-four hours a day. For those of us outside the affected area, the images of anguish, grief, and loss are surreal and almost unfathomable in their magnitude, evoking empathy, compassion, and grief of our own. But for those in Katrina’s path, particularly residents of New Orleans and the Mississippi delta, those who have lost family, friends, homes, and livelihood, it’s the apocalypse. -

NATIONALISM AND COSMOPOLITANISM: ON THE GODS OF GREECE, ITALY, AND INDIA Phiroze Vasunia A new form of cultural cosmopolitanism arose in Europe, in the second half of the eighteenth century, partly as a consequence of the Enlightenment and partly as the result of an increased colonial presence in Asia. One of its most illustrious and influential exponents was William Jones, the linguist, translator, and judge for the East India Company in Calcutta. His lecture ‘On the Gods of Greece, Italy, and India’, written in 1784 and subsequently revised, offers a perspective on myth that is supple, flexible, and wide-ranging. It appeared some time before his famous statement about the kinship of languages, in the Third Anniversary Discourse of February 1786, and anticipates some of the conclusions at which he arrived later still. In fact, Jones’ writings in the months and years before the celebrated discourse of 1786, are already pointing to connections and syntheses across cultures; they offer a conception of mythological and religious contact that is startling in its openness and far removed from the parochialism of numerous contemporaries. Jones’ work demonstrates that a cosmopolitan and transnational recuperation of the ancient narratives exists alongside national or nationalist readings of myth. The emergence of the nation state in the eighteenth century gave a new urgency to the idea and the actuality of the nation and, thus, also an important new context to the relationship between nation and myth. The Founding Fathers and other colonial Americans argued vehemently about the meaning of the story of Aeneas and the establishment of Rome. -

van Binsbergen, Wim M.J., 2020, The leg child in global cultural history: A distributional exercise in comparative mythology, at: http://www.quest- journal.net/shikanda/topicalities/leg_child,pdf In this paper we shall address an interessting and wide-spread mytheme that nonetheless is little known outside the circle of comparative mythologists: the leg child. In comparative mythology, the leg child is a mythical anthropomorphic figure born from a human body otherwise than via the normal birth channel; cf . van Binsbergen 2018: 417, where I wrote approximately (text considerably adapted): .... the mytheme of the leg child (NarCom 12b). This is a common motif, indicating a mythical figure who was born, not by passing through the normal birth channel, but through a thigh, armpit, waist, occiput or any other part of the human body except the birth channel. The type case is from Ancient Greek mythology, where Dionysus was sewn into his father Zeus's thigh, and born from there, after his mother Semele had been burned to death under the hot splendour of Zeus' lightning.(...) Quite a few mythical protagonists worldwide appear as leg children, including Ancient Egyptian Seth born from his mother's side, Thoth from his father's skull (Bonnet 1952: 702 f.), cf. Greek Athena from her father's skull (and when Hephaestus – who incidentally, as a smith was the very one to split Zeus’s skull on that occasion – in sexual arousal ejaculated against Athena's thigh who in disgust wiped off the sperm with a handful of wool and cast it to the Earth, who immediately responded by producing Erichthonius [ – by an ancient popular etymology, ‘Wool-Earthy’ – , ] this makes the latter also a leg child although he was reputedly borne by Gaia / Earth). -

It is in terms of religion that a nation defines what it considers to be true”. G. W. F. Hegel, Lectures on the of Philosophy of World History. Abstract In 1953 Aarne Koskinen’s book, The Missionary Influence as a Political Factor in the Pacific Islands, appeared on the shelves of the academic world, adding further fuel to the longstanding debate in anthropological and historical studies regarding the role and effects of missionary activity in colonial settings. Koskinen’s finding supported the general view amongst anthropologists and historians that missionary activity had a negative impact on non-Western populations, wiping away their cultural templates and disrupting their socio-economic and political systems. This attitude towards mission activity assumes that the contemporary non-Western world is the product of the ‘West’, and that what the ‘Rest’ believes and how it lives, its social, economic and political systems, as well as its values and beliefs, have derived from or have been implanted by the ‘West’. This postulate has led to the denial of the agency of non-Western or colonial people, deeming them as ‘history-less’ and ‘nation-less’: as an entity devoid of identity. But is this postulate true? Have the non-Western populations really been passive recipients of Western commodities, ideas and values? This dissertation examines the role that Christianity, the ideology of the West, the religion whose values underlies the semantics and structures of modernisation, has played in the genesis and rise of West Papuan nationalism.
