Ethnobiol. 6(1):99-120 Summer 1986 TOPICS AND ISSUES IN ETHNOENTOMOLOGY WITH SOME SUGGESTIONS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF HYPOTHESIS-GENERATION AND TESTING IN ETHNOBIOLOGY DARRELL ADDISON POSEY Labotatbrio de Etnobiologia Departamento de Biologia Universidade Federal do Maranhao 65,000 Sao Luiz, Maranhao (Brazil) ABSTRACT.-This paper defines ethnoentornology, briefly traces the history of the field, surveys the literature in major subject areas and offers suggestions for continued research. Hypothesis-generation/testing is suggested as an important 1/ intellectual bridge" to a world science that builds upon knowledge systems of all human societies. Examples are presented. INTRODUCTION Definitions, even for ethnoentomology, are often difficult to formulate, and, once formulated, are usually unsatisfactory. Insight and understanding is sometimes increased through a comparison with a related term or concept, hence the juxtaposition of "cultural entomology" and "ethnoentomology" in the discussion that follows. Cultural entomology treats the influence of insects upon the "essence of humanity as expressed in the arts and humanities" (Hogue 1980). Cultural anthropologists usually restrict their studies to "advanced," industrialized, and literate societies, maintaining that entomological concerns of "primitive" or "noncivilized" societies are in the domain of ethnoentomology. They are principally interested in written forms of cultural expres sion and limit their studies to physically recorded sources of literate societies. It is well to note that -

Vena, B.A., M.A. Marquette University, 2009 One of the unfortunate implications of industrialization and the rapid expansion of global commerce is the magnification of the impact that humans have on their environment. Exponential population growth, along with growing technological capabilities, has allowed human societies to alter their terrain in unprecedented and destructive ways. The cumulative effect has been significant to the point that the blame for widespread environmental degradation must be pinned squarely on human shoulders. Because of our dependence on these systems for survival, the threat to the environment is a threat to human life. The root of the ecological crisis is found in human attitudes and behaviors. In the late 1960’s it was suggested that Christianity was a key source of the problem because it promoted the idea of human “dominion” over creation. -

Katie Russell Issue Brief: Native Americans and Minority Religion Keywords: Native Americans, Religious Freedom, First Amendment Rights, Religious Freedom Restoration Act, Christianity, Native American Religions Description: The following brief describes religious affiliation of Native Americans, with an emphasis on historical movements and legal difficulties that have impacted Native Americans religious identity (i.e. religious freedom). Additionally, current religious freedom struggles are addressed. Key Points: • Native Americans have historically struggled to obtain First Amendment rights related to religious freedom; this is due in part to their unconventional citizenship status. • The federal government’s historically meddlesome approach to Native American religious tradition has greatly influenced Native American’s form of worship, causing a departure from traditional Native American religions and shift towards Christianity. • The federal government resettled Indians, outlawed the practice of native religion, and put into place a series of assimilation programs until the creation of the New Deal in 1933 (which revoked many of these limitations). • Native Americans had the majority of their religious rights formally restored to them with the enactment of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act in the 1990’s. • Today, Native American’s primary religious struggles are to gain access to sacred sites and have sacred artifacts returned. They also face many opponents of their use of controversial items such as peyote and eagle feathers in rituals, despite being legally permitted to utilize these goods. Issue Brief: According to the 2010 United States Census, Native Americans make up approximately 1.7% of the population (5.4 million people) (Yurth). It is approximated that 9000 people, or less than 1% of this population, solely practice Native American religions which often incorporates a variety of ceremonies and symbolism focused on animalism (Ratts & Pedersen, 159). -

COMMENT SACRED RAIN ARROW: HONORING THE NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE OF THE STATES WHILE BALANCING THE CITIZENS’ CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS Amelia Coates* Abstract Many states’ histories and traditions are steeped heavily in Native American culture, which explains why tribal imagery and symbolism are prevalent in official state paraphernalia such as license plates, flags, and state seals. Problems arise for states using Native American artwork when a citizen takes offense to the religious implications of Native American depictions, and objects to having it displayed on any number of items. This Comment will examine the likely outcome of cases involving Establishment Clause and compelled speech claims arising from Native American images and propose a solution for balancing the constitutional rights of the citizens while still honoring the states’ rich Native American heritage. -

The objective was to identify the influence of practical experiences involving ethnobiology applied to science teaching on intercultural dialogue into their initial training. To collect data, undergraduate students were asked to construct narratives revealing the influences of ethnobiology into their training as future teachers. Data were analyzed according to Bardin (1977) and supported by specific literature from the fields of science education and teaching. The thematic categories generated lead us to conclude that the undergraduates of biology teaching made reflections that allowed them to build opinions with meanings that should influence their pedagogical practices with intercultural dialogue. We recommend further studies involving ethnobiology and the training of biology teachers, with a larger sample of participants and the methodological and theoretical procedures of this science. Improvements could be made in biology teacher education curricula that encourage respect and consideration of cultural diversity. We highlight that it is imperative for teacher education courses to generate opportunities for on-site practical experience, in addition to the theory used in the classroom. -

The Context of Eco-Theology
CHAPTER 29 The Context of Eco-theology Laurel Icearns The phrase "I'm a tree-hugging Jesus freak," a self-description uttered recently by a Pentecostal environmentalist, demonstrates the complexity of contemporary eco- theology and religious ecological activism. For the past two decades or more, the com- bination of these two identities seemed unthinkable, for Christians were still struggling to articulate a response, much less a response that would appeal to Pentecostals, usually viewed as un-ecological. This chapter examines many of the historical and more contemporary contexts that shape what is now a rich eco-theological conversation. Although the chapter tries to give a broad international sense of the movement, it draws heavily upon the US context where a diverse and multi-faceted conversation about eco-theology has been going on for over three decades. Furthermore, while there are now ecological voices within all the major religious traditions, this chapter will primarily focus on Christianity as the context of eco-theology. While there are many historical precedents that one could acknowledge leading into the contemporary environmental movement, such as Aldo Leopold's Sand Country Almanac (1949),most scholars agree it began in the 1960s, marked by a variety of pub- lications that brought attention to the issues at hand. In fact, many historians of the movement date the birth of the modern environmental movement to Rachel Carson's 1962 paradigm-changing book Silent Spring, which detailed the damage wrought by pesticides throughout the ecological web. Garrett Hardin's "Tragedy of the Commons" (1968),a doomsday scenario about population growth, was published toward the end of the decade. -

The research investigated questions of early Holocene wood artifact technologies and other plant use before the large-scale arrival of western redcedar (Thuja plicata), a cultural keystone species for Haida in more recent times. The project relied on small- scale excavations and sampling from two main areas of the site: a hearth complex and an activity area at the edge of a paleopond. The archaeobotanical assemblage from these two areas yielded 23 plant taxa representing 14 families in the form of wood, charcoal, seeds, and additional plant macrofossils.
