Parker Department of Biological Sciences University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Waukesha, Wisconsin 53188 Introduction The University of Wisconsin-Waukesha Field Station was founded in 1967 through the generous gift of a 98 acre farm by Ms. Gertrude Sherman. The facility is located approximately nine miles west of Waukesha on Highway 18, just south of the Waterville Road intersection. The site consists of rolling glacial deposits covered with old field vegetation, 20 acres of xeric oak woods, a small lake with marshlands and bog, and a cold water stream. Other communities are being estab- lished as a result of restoration work; among these are mesic prairie, oak opening, and stands of various conifers. A long-term study of higher fungi and Myxomycetes, primarily from the xeric oak woods, was started in 1978.

    Chaetomium convolutum and C. hexagonosporum from Italy with a morphological revision of the group-bostrychodes Francesco DOVERI Abstract: Chaetomium convolutum, newly isolated from herbivore dung in a survey of coprophilous asco- mycetes and basidiomycetes, is first described from Italy and compared with other species of the so called “group-bostrychodes”. The taxonomic uncertainty, still present in this group despite a recent comparative, morphological and molecular study, led the author to revise all Italian collections of species related to C. convolutum, and to prove that also the very rare C. hexagonosporum is present in Italy. The morphological Ascomycete.org, 8 (5) : 185-198. features of C. hexagonosporum are described in detail and particularly compared with those of C. convolutum. L'incertezza tassonomica, ancora presente in questo gruppo nonostante un recente studio comparativo, morfologico e molecolare, ha indotto l'autore a rivedere tutte le raccolte italiane correlate a C. convolutum, e a dimostrare che anche il molto raro C. hexagonosporum è presente in Italia. Le caratteristiche morfologiche di C. hexagonosporum sono dettagliatamente descritte e in modo particolare confrontate con quelle di C. convolutum.

    DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES OF NEOTROPICAL ASCOMYCETE TAXONOMISTS Richard P. Korf Emeritus Professor of Mycology at Cornell University & Emeritus Curator of the Cornell Plant Pathology Herbarium, Ithaca, New York A talk presented at the VII Congress of Latin American Mycology, San José, Costa Rica, July 20, 2011 ABSTRACT Is taxonomic inquiry outdated, or cutting edge? A reassessment is made of the goals, successes, and failures of taxonomists who study the fungi of the Neotropics, with a view toward what we should do in the future if we are to have maximum scientific and societal impact. Ten questions are posed, including: Do we really need names? Who is likely to be funding our future research? Is the collapse of the Ivory Tower of Academia a dream or a nightmare? I have been invited here to present a talk on my views on what taxonomists working on Ascomycetes in the Neotropics should be doing. Why me? Perhaps just because I am one of the oldest ascomycete taxonomists, who just might have some shreds of wisdom to impart. I take the challenge seriously, and somewhat to my surprise I have come to some conclusions that shock me, as well they may shock you. OUR HISTORY Let's take a brief view of the time frame I want to talk about. It's really not that old. Most of us think of Elias Magnus Fries as the "father of mycology," a starting point for fungal names as the sanctioning author for most of the fungi. In 1825 Fries was halfway through his Systema Mycologicum, describing and illustrating fungi on what he could see without the aid of a microscope.

Gareth Jones, [email protected] Abstract: Phylogenetic analyses of four nuclear genes, namely the large and small subunits of the nuclear ribosomal RNA, transcription elongation factor 1-alpha and the second largest RNA polymerase II subunit, established that the ecological group of marine bitunicate ascomycetes has representatives in the orders Capnodiales, Hysteriales, Jahnulales, Mytilinidiales, Patellariales and Pleosporales. Most of the fungi sequenced were intertidal mangrove taxa and belong to members of 12 families in the Pleosporales: Aigialaceae, Didymellaceae, Leptosphaeriaceae, Lenthitheciaceae, Lophiostomataceae, Massarinaceae, Montagnulaceae, Morosphaeriaceae, Phaeosphaeriaceae, Pleosporaceae, Testudinaceae and Trematosphaeriaceae. Two new families are described: Aigialaceae and Morosphaeriaceae, and three new genera proposed: Halomassarina, Morosphaeria and Rimora.

Chaetomium species were isolated from soil in pineapple plantations in Phatthalung and Rayong provinces by soil plate and baiting techniques. Taxonomic study was based on available dichotomously keys and monograph of the genus. Five species are recorded as follows: C. aureum, C. bostrychodes, C. cochliodes, C. cupreum and C. gracile. Another four species are reported to be new records in Thailand as follows: C. carinthiacum, C. flavigenum, C. perlucidum and C. succineum. Key words: Chaetomium, Taxonomic study Introduction Chaetomium is a fungus belonging to Ascomycota of the family Chaetomiaceae which established by Kunze in 1817 (von Arx et al., 1986). Chaetomium Kunze is one of the largest genera of saprophytic ascomycetes which comprise more than 300 species worldwide (von Arx et al., 1986; Soytong and Quimio, 1989; Decock and Hennebert, 1997; Udagawa et al., 1997; Rodríguez et al., 2002). INTRODUCTION Members of the genus Claviceps are specialized parasites of grasses, rushes and sedges that specifically infect florets. The host reproductive organs are replaced with a sclerotium. However, it has been shown that after artificial inoculation, C. purpurea can grow and form sclerotia on stem meristems (Lewis, 1956) so that there is a capacity for epiphytic and endophytic growth. C. phalaridis, an Australian endemite, colonizes whole plants of pooid hosts in a way similar to Epichloë and it forms sclerotia in all florets of the infected plant, rendering it sterile (Walker, 1957; 1970). Until now, about 45 teleomorph species of Claviceps have been described, but presumably many species may exist only in anamorphic (sphacelial) stage and therefore go unnoticed. Although C. purpurea is type species for the genus, it is in many aspects untypical, because most Claviceps species originate from tropical regions, colonize panicoid grasses, produce macroconidia and microconidia in their sphacelial stage and are able of microcyclic conidiation from macroconidia. Species on panicoid hosts with monogeneric to polygeneric host ranges predominate. 329 2. PHYLOGENETIC TREE We compared sequences of ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA region for 19 species of Claviceps, Database sequences of Myrothecium atroviride (AJ302002) (outgroup from Bionectriaceae), Epichloe amarillans (L07141), Atkinsonella hypoxylon (U57405) and Myriogenospora atramentosa (U57407) were included to root the tree among other related genera.
