Perhaps it's the colonial hangover that still makes us believe that they are always right over there. In this case however, the distinction is not going to make any difference as the person gaining it is already a household name here. Rahul Dev Burman, who has given music for 225 Hindi films, has made it to the New York hit parade with a song titled In every city. He is all set to launch the album—'Pantera'—in India. Two people have been responsible for getting him there—his father Sachin Dev Burman who was the only member of the family willing to let him enter films, and Pete Gavankar, a friend of thirty years who goaded him into seek- ing new pastures and has financed the album. Intrigued, we decided to find out just how the international album had come about and while we were at it, also gauge just how much R.D. had already packed into his life of 45 years.     Slide 1: Title Producing Bollywood: Sustainability and the impacts on Auckland’s cultural economy Introduction This paper examines the variety of ways event producers, as entrepreneurs; depend on relationships to create and maintain local and global networks that contribute to local and transnational cultural economies. Cultural economy in this context is considered as Pratt suggests: “ a set of socio‐economic relations that enable cultural activities” (2008, p. 49). Recently produced events have had a significant impact on the local cultural economy challenging the economic and cultural sustainability of Auckland’s Indian commercial event market. Some entrepreneurs are able to produce events that can be considered not only successful; normally measured by profitability and rave reviews, but also considered to be sustainable. Sustainability, in event management, results from a variable combination of economic feasibility, improved reputations for producers and/or artists, ongoing relationships among producers and others in the event industry, and production skill competency (Pernecky & Lück, 2013). I suggest that the continuous formal and informal processes, systems, structures, and relationships of cultural activities create production networks that contribute to the sustainability of local and global cultural economies. To set the scene I begin with a brief overviews of Auckland’s rapidly growing Indian population and the scope of commercial event produced. I will conclude with a case study that demonstrates dramatic changes in the sustainability of producing Bollywood star shows in Auckland. The language of cinema continues to evolve in a living tradition and the filmmakers trace the ever-changing language of this medium from the silent era to the talkies, from the days when screen went from black and white and got colorized. Emotional appeal, subtlety in its communication and most importantly throwing a new light on the world, as we know it counted a lot to the audience. Filmmakers now work across the spectrum of media including painting, novels, theatre and opera. In the global cinema, in general, the production has become more accessible today, the qualitative aspects have sadly given way to quantity and so, films often miss emotional and spiritual richness. The world is a closer place today. Perhaps it is cinema that helps to blur the boundaries. The concept of film as a commercial art form started in fifties. The fifties and sixties are generally known as the golden period of Indian cinema not only because masterpieces were being made, but because of the popularity of the songs of that era. One of the distinctive features of Indian cinema is its narrative structure.
