A Delicate Balance Negotiating Isolation and Globalization in the Burmese Performing Arts Catherine Diamond If you walk on and on, you get to your destination. (Maung Htin Aung 1959:87) So go the three lines of wisdom offered to the lazy student Maung Pauk Khaing in the well- known eponymous folk tale. A group of impoverished village youngsters, led by their teacher Daw Khin Thida, adapted the tale in 2007 in their first attempt to perform a play. From a well-to-do family that does not understand her philanthropic impulses, Khin Thida, an English teacher by profession, works at her free school in Insein, a suburb of Yangon (Rangoon) infamous for its prison. The shy students practiced first in Burmese for their village audience, and then in English for some foreign donors who were coming to visit the school. Khin Thida has also bought land in Bagan (Pagan) and is building a culture center there, hoping to attract the street children who currently pander to tourists at the site’s immense network of temples. Chapter 9 Reading Myself and Worlds: Coping Strategies in the Face of Cumulative Trauma Danielle Schaub 1 Introduction When starting in the years during which the self takes shape, childhood trau- ma leaves its scars on the sites of formation in the child’s developmental trajec- tory. In my case, the continuous geographical and linguistic disruptions caused by my father’s peripatetic working life foregrounded language as a site of traumatisation and insecurity in early years. Such insecurity only signals one trauma this body experienced repeatedly. The various traumatic experiences that inform me include cumulative trauma resulting from parental symbiosis underplaying a child’s existence; unprepared-for displacement and translation of identity; abandonment in a convent at the age of three; untimely death of a parent believed healthy without post-factum psychological or emotional sup- port; death of an underage sibling. I thought I had managed to bounce back after the debilitating experiences, proving capable of resilience. To some ex- tent I had; otherwise I would not have functioned, but since the experiences haunted me with a nagging, unsettling feeling for years, I found myself pon- dering over my reactions, behaviours, responses to specific stressful situations. With time and much ink, as Boris Cyrulnik notes, I have come to terms with the past and perceive what once felt life threatening as less devastating.1 With creative pieces involving the textual and the visual in combination or on their own, the chapter illustrates and theorises the process undertaken to cope with traumas as well as the understanding of patterns adopted to disconnect from the traumatic sources. -

Students will analyze dance’s role in improving and maintaining one’s health related fitness and then incorporate dance activities into their personal fitness program/plan. Students will learn basic steps as well as complex combinations in Merengue, Salsa, Bachata, and the Cha Cha. For each dance, the students will learn the historical and geographical roots, the music and the instruments associated with each one. This course will help students learn the skills of dance while improving their technique, poise, self-confidence and creative ability as well as deepening their understanding of and appreciation for the rich and colorful heritage that each dance represents. As a course involving couples’ dances, it will allow students to develop an understanding of the social etiquette involved in couples dancing. GOALS: Students need to: • Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to performance of the following dances: Merengue, Salsa, Bachata and Cha Cha. • Assess and maintain a level of physical fitness to improve health and performance. • Demonstrate knowledge of physical fitness concepts, principles, and strategies to improve health and performance in dance. • Demonstrate and utilize knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies as applied to learning and performance of Latin dance. -

Trance as Artefact: De-Othering transformative states with reference to examples from contemporary dance in Canada Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Dance Studies, University of Surrey August 1st, 2007 Bridget E. Cauthery (2007) ABSTRACT Reflecting on his fieldwork among the Malagasy speakers of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean, Canadian anthropologist Michael Lambek questions why the West has a “blind spot” when it comes to the human activity of trance. Immersed in his subject’s trance practices, he questions why such a fundamental aspect of the Malagasy culture, and many other cultures he has studied around the world, is absent from his own. This research addresses the West’s preoccupation with trance in ethnographic research and simultaneous disinclination to attribute or situate trance within its own indigenous dance practices. From a Western perspective, the practice and application of research suggests a paradigm that locates trance according to an imperialist West/non-West agenda. If the accumulated knowledge and data about trance is a by-product of the colonialist project, then trance may be perceived as an attribute or characteristic of the Other. As a means of investigating this imbalance, I propose that trance could be reconceived as an attribute or characteristic of the Self, as exemplified by dancers engaged in Western dance practices within traditional anthropology’s “own backyard.” In doing so, I examine the degree to which trance can be a meaningful construct within the cultural analysis of contemporary dance creation and performance. Through case studies with four dancer/choreographers active in Canada, Margie Gillis, Zab Maboungou, Brian Webb and Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe, this research explores the cultural parameters and framing of transformative states in contemporary dance. -

The stage was set since the First World War, when expatriate African Americans first began creating here, through their performance and patronage of jazz, “a new sense of black commu- nity, one based on positive affects and experience.”1 This community was a permeable one, where men and women of different races came together on the dance floor. As the novelist Michel Leiris recalls in his autobiographical work, L’Age d’homme, “During the years immediately following November 11th, 1918, nationalities were sufficiently con- fused and class barriers sufficiently lowered … for most parties given by young people to be strange mixtures where scions of the best families mixed with the dregs of the dance halls … In the period of great licence following the hostilities, jazz was a sign of allegiance, an orgiastic tribute to the colours of the moment. It functioned magically, and its means of influence can be compared to a kind of possession. -
