CAPE MAY CM Whether commuting within southern New Jersey – or to , Atlantic City, Trenton or New York – traveling by train, bus, subway or trolley can save time, money and the environment!

Start with a timetable.

You will need to have a timetable for the schedule of the bus or train line you want to take. You can obtain timetables by accessing the websites or information numbers listed at the end of this brochure for the appropriate carrier. Or you can pick up timetables at major stations or information centers. Here is just a partial list:

NJ TRANSIT - CAMDEN/WALTER RAND TRANSPORTATION CENTER, TRENTON STATION, ATLANTIC CITY BUS AND RAIL STATIONS

PATCO - ALL STATIONS

SEPTA - INFORMATION CENTER AT 1234 MARKET STREET, MARKET EAST STATION, SUBURBAN STATION,

AMTRAK - 30TH STREET STATION

You can also get NJ TRANSIT southern New Jersey bus timetables and maps, PATCO and Cape May Seashore Lines timetables and select NJ TRANSIT, SEPTA, and Amtrak rail timetables at many public locations and from the Regional Travel Information Center at:

2002D Lincoln Drive West • Marlton, NJ 08053-1530 PHONE (856) 596-8228 • FAX (856) 983-0388 WEB SITE www.transportationchoices.com E-MAIL [email protected] 1 Note: Information contained in this guide is subject to change. Always consult with the particular carrier. Reading a timetable–easy as 1-2-3!

Choose your direction of travel and look at 1 the section of the schedule for either weekdays (Monday thru Friday) or weekends (Saturday, Sunday and holidays).

Find the location you are starting from 2 on the timetable. On bus timetables, the “time points” listed represent the major stops. also stop at locations along the route that are between the time points. On train timetables, every station is listed, but trains will only stop at a station when a time is listed. If the space is blank, that particular train will not make that station stop.

Choose the start time of your trip. On NJ 3 , River LINESM and PATCO timetables, read down. On NJ TRANSIT, SEPTA and Amtrak train timetables, read across. Continue to your destination. The trip’s arrival time will be noted. Be sure to read any special symbols or footnotes! They give important information about your bus route or train line. Peak-hour trains are listed in the shaded areas of NJ TRANSIT and SEPTA timetables. Off-peak tickets are not valid on these trains.

SAVE with TransitChek ® TransitChek® gives employees a discount on transportation fares by enabling employers to offer a non-taxable fringe benefit. Special TransitChek® vouchers can be used like cash towards fares on NJ TRANSIT, PATCO, SEPTA, and Amtrak, as well as other transportation modes including vanpools. For more information, call 1-800-355-5000, or visit www.gettransitchek.org.

6 Traveling by Bus

In urban areas such as Camden, Philadelphia, Trenton and Atlantic City, bus stops are usually marked by bus stop signs and many stops (such as those along Market St. in Philadelphia) have bus shelters. Signs may list the route numbers of the buses stopping at that location. Be sure to check the route and destination of the bus you want to take on both the bus stop sign and on the bus.

In suburban and rural areas, all bus stops may not be marked. But you can still board a bus anywhere along the route where it is safe for the bus to stop. To board the bus, just signal the driver clearly with your hand as the bus approaches.

When you board, tell the driver where you are going and deposit the required fare. Most local/city transit buses are exact fare only! The bus will be labeled “Exact Fare” on the outside next to the entrance door. The fare box will accept coins and $1.00 bills. The driver does not have change! Bus Fares NJ TRANSIT bus fares are based on the number of zones traveled between your origin and destination. The fare for a one-zone intrastate trip is $1.25. Additional zone charges may apply for longer trips. Most trips in southern New Jersey are four zones or less. If your trip requires a transfer to a second bus, purchase a transfer for 55 cents when you pay your fare on the first bus – you’ll save 70 cents on the second fare! Transfers are available for intrastate trips at the following rates: Adult - $.55 Child/Senior Citizen/People with Disabilities - $.25

7 If you commute daily, you can save up to 35% over the regular one-way fare by purchasing a monthly NJ TRANSIT bus pass. You can use it to make unlimited trips on NJ TRANSIT bus routes for an entire calendar month for the number of zones indicated on the pass. There is an interstate pass for rides between New Jersey and Philadelphia and an intrastate pass for rides totally within New Jersey.

If you travel only a few days a week, a 10-trip ticket is available at a 10-25% discount over the regular one-way fare. It is good for ten one-way trips for 20 days from the date of purchase.

Monthly and 10-trip tickets are available at most major bus terminals, at local ticket agencies and by mail through NJ TRANSIT’s MAIL-FARE program. Call (800) 648-0215 for MAIL-FARE information, or go to www.njtransit.com and click on QuikTikSM online ticketing.

For information regarding SEPTA bus and rail fares and cost of transfers, call SEPTA at (215) 580-7800. Discounted fares are available by using tokens, Transpass, TrailPass, Day Pass, or Cross County Pass. Depending upon frequency of travel, significant discounts can be realized.
