THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES™ Taxonomy Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Animalia Mollusca Gastropoda Stylommatophora Hygromiidae Taxon Name: Hystricella turricula Lowe, 1831 Synonym(s): • Discula turricula Common Name(s): • English: Cima Discula Assessment Information Red List Category & Criteria: Vulnerable D2 ver 2.3 Year Published: 2013 Date Assessed: August 31, 2010 Justification: Seddon (2008) suggested a revised assessment of Critically Endangered B1ab(iii) (version 3.1) given the survey work by Cook and Cameron (1999-2001; Cameron, pers. comm, 2010) confirming the small extent of occurrence (under 10 km2) and declining quality of habitat. However the offshore islet where it is present is now protected, and hence the quality of habitat is probably not declining over the whole range of the species and a lower risk of extinction is now thought more appropriate, hence it is confirmed as listed as Vulnerable D2; no change from previous Red List assessments. Previously Published Red List Assessments 1996 – Vulnerable (VU) 1994 – Vulnerable (V) 1990 – Vulnerable (V) 1988 – Vulnerable (V) 1986 – Vulnerable (V) 1983 – Vulnerable (V) Geographic Range Range Description: This species is endemic to the Madeiran islands: it is restricted to the islet of Ilheu de Cima, south-east of the main island of Porto Santo (Seddon 2008). Country Occurrence: © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Hystricella turricula – published in 2013. 1 http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2011-1.RLTS.T6723A12800477.en Native: Portugal (Madeira) © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Hystricella turricula – published in 2013. 2 http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2011-1.RLTS.T6723A12800477.en Distribution Map © The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species: Hystricella turricula – published in 2013. 3 http://dx.doi.org/10.2305/IUCN.UK.2011-1.RLTS.T6723A12800477.en Population This species is only present on an offshore islet and there are no recent data on population trends. Current Population Trend: Unknown Habitat and Ecology (see Appendix for additional information) This species is found beneath large blocks of basalt scattered on the grassy slopes (Seddon 2008). Systems: Terrestrial Use and Trade The species is not known to be utilised, although occasionally sold by shell collectors. Threats (see Appendix for additional information) Although the vegetation on the island has been subjected to grazing, at present the levels of threat to the species are uncertain. Any activity that disturbs the vegetation around the basalt blocks where the species is found could lead to disturbance of the species. Conservation Actions (see Appendix for additional information) This species is listed on the EU Habitats and Species Directive Annex II and the Council of Europe Bern Convention Appendix 2. At present the range lies in a protected area. Further research on habitat status and monitoring would be recommended for this species which is found in a protected area. It contains 56 chapters on tree diseases prepared by 27 authors, and emphasizes disease situations as observed in the 10 states of the Great Plains: Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming. The need for an updated tree disease guide for the Great Plains has been recog- nized for some time and an account of the history of this publication is provided here.

KRAMARENKO Mykolaiv National Agrarian University, Paryzka Komuna St. 9, Mykolaiv, 54020, Ukraine (e-mail: [email protected]) ABSTRACT: Mechanisms which govern patterns of intra-specific vatiation in land snails were traced within areas of different size, using Brephulopsis cylindrica (Menke), Chondrula tridens (O. F. Müller), Xeropicta derbentina (Krynicki), X. krynickii (Krynicki), Cepaea vindobonensis (Férussac) and Helix albescens Rossmässler as examples. Morphometric shell variation, colour and banding pattern polymorphism as well as genetic polymorphism (allozymes and RAPD markers) were studied. The results and literature data were analysed in an attempt to link patterns to processes, with the following conclusions. Formation of patterns of intra- specific variation (initial processes of microevolution) takes different course at three different spatial scales. At micro-geographical scale the dominant role is played by eco-demographic characteristics of the species in the context of fluctuating environmental factors. At meso-geographical scale a special part is played by stochastic population-genetic processes. At macro-geographical scale more or less distinct clinal patterns are associated with basic macroclimatic

Because of the high calcium content of its foliage, Cornus florida (flowering dogwood) has been described as a calcium ‘‘pump’’ that draws calcium from deeper mineral soil and enriches surface soil horizons. However, over the last two decades an exotic fungal disease (dogwood anthracnose, Discula destructiva) has decimated populations of this once- common understory species. Its loss, combined with forest stand development, could alter intra-stand calcium cycling. We used data from long-term vegetation monitoring plots to examine the ecological role of C. florida in calcium cycling and to identify changes in annual foliar calcium cycling over a 20-year period between two sampling intervals, 1977–1979 (pre- anthracnose) and 1995–2000 (post-anthracnose). Published equations were used to estimate foliar biomass per species for five forest types: alluvial, typic cove, acid cove, oak–hickory, and oak–pine. Calcium concentrations derived from foliage samples were used to estimate annual foliar calcium production per species for understory woody stems (,20 cm dbh) and total foliar calcium production for overstory stems (20 cm dbh).
