Hairy rose beetle - Tropinota squalida Scop. flickr.com The beetle is very similar to the related Epicometis (Tropinota) hirta. The body is flat, rectangular-shaped (length 8-13 mm), grayish black in colour. All surfaces of the body are covered with yellowish-hairs. The elytrae are black, with small yellowish flecks. In male beetles, on the abdominal side there is a longitudinal hollow - this is a clear morphological difference from E. hirta, which has no hollow. Other differences in morphology between T. squalida and E. hirta are not easily visible and telling apart of female specimens require taxonomic knowledge. Host plants: The adult beetle causes damage to flowers of citrus, apple, The beetle, which is caught in the trap strawberries and many other spring-blossoming plants. The beetle chews the petals, staminae and stigmae thus rendering the flower infertile. It can damage not only flowers in full blossom, but also in the bud stage. Its damage is similar to that of the closely related scarabs E. hirta and Oxythyrea funesta The grub (larva) lives in the soil, feeds on rotting plant material, it causes no damage. The trap should be suspended in orchards from lower branches or placed on the soil by the trunks of trees. In strawberry fields the trap should be set on the soil, fastened to a pole. It is of utmost importance that the blue coloured upper funnel of the trap be in contact with sunshine as long as possible during the day; beetles do not like to come into traps in the shade. Usual beginning of trapping in Sicily is middle of March, in any case it is advisable to set up traps several days before blossoming starts. -

DIPLOMARBEIT Carabid assemblages of various forest communities of the National Park Thayatal (northern part), Lower Austria angestrebter akademischer Grad Magister der Naturwissenschaften (Mag. rer.nat.) Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Waitzbauer Wien, im Juni 2009 Summary The study took place in the Nationalpark “Thayatal-Podyjí” (northern Lower Austria) on seven sites from April to October 2005 and additionally on two different sites from April to October 2006. The carabid assemblages of this different sampling sites, which vary in their geology and forest type, were examined by using pitfall traps. Carabids were suitable bioindicators for this study because they are easy to trap and their ecological preferences are well known. The carabid assemblages were characterised by composition of wing morphology types, body sizes and ecological valences and by three ecological parameters which were Shannon Index, Eveness, and Forest Affinity Index (FAI). In total 17 different species were identified and the species number varied from 1 to 10 among the sites. Aptinus bombarda was the most abundant species but could only be found at two sites followed by Abax parallelepipedus, Abax ovalis and Molops piceus. Abax paralellepipedus was the most wide spread species and appeared at six sites. In total more than 80 % of all registrated species were brachypterous, 30 % were stenoecious and 70 % were body size category IV and V which means that large species were in the majority. The Shannon Index was highest with 2.01 at the very well structured oaktree mixed forest MXG3, and the FAI Index showed its highest value at the oaktree hornbeam forest ES and at the beechwood forest MXG2 with 0.98 each. -

Un ridotto numero di specie svolge in Europa il ciclo vitale all’interno degli alberi morti a terra o in piedi e questi sono perciò considerate a tutti gli effetti come invertebrati saproxilici, al contrario molte altre entità geofile passano solo parte della loro esistenza nel legno morto e vengono definiti come subxaproxilici, o xaproxilici temporanei, ma tutti svolgono come predatori un ruolo importante nella regolazione dei processi di decomposizione del legno (BELL, 1994; SPEIGHT, 1989; SCHLAGHAMERSKÝ, 2000). -

In some of its localities it is plentiful, indeed may be taken where ever there is a good growth of Cariamine pratensis on roadfside verges within the boundaries of its known distribution, except towarca its western limit in West Sussex where ita occurrence appears to be more patchy. -
The Diversity of the Family Cetoniidae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeoidea) of Mountain Ozren (Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Acta entomologica serbica, 2013, 18(1/2): 55-67 UDC 595.764(497.6) THE DIVERSITY OF THE FAMILY CETONIIDAE (COLEOPTERA: SCARABAEOIDEA) OF MOUNTAIN OZREN (BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA) MIRZETA KAŠIĆ-LELO*, SUVAD LELO and ADI VESNIĆ Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Biology Department Zmaja od Bosne 33 71000 Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina * E-mail: [email protected] Abstract From April to September of 2008 and 2009 samples of family Cetoniidae Leach, 1815 were collected on the vertical profile of the southern slopes of Mount Ozren near Sarajevo. Research was conducted at six selected localities: Orlovac, Nahorevo, Čavljak, Skakvac, Bukovik and Crepoljsko. After 41 field investigations, 594 individuals were collected and determined as representatives of seven species. Collected data were processed with statistical software Biodiversity Pro and with options Diversity/Compare diversities: Alpha index; Berger-Parker index; Simpsons index; Margaleff index; Mackintosh index; Bray-Curtis Cluster Analysis: Single Link. By comparison of data it was concluded that Skakavac represents the typical locality for southern slopes of Mount Ozren. The species Oxythyrea funesta (Poda, 1761) is the most numerous faunistic element that was found. KEY WORDS: Cetoniidae, fauna, biodiversity, Ozren, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina Introduction After World War II the most important data on flower chafer Cetoniidae Leach, 1815 of Bosnia and Herzegovina were given by Rene MIKŠIĆ who investigated the area of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the entire Balkan Peninsula and most of the Palaearctic (MIKŠIĆ, 1950, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1962, 1965, 1970, 1976, 1977, 1980, 1982, 1987, e.g.). What little research done on this group after the war events in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992-1995 was undertaken mostly by authors of this paper (LELO, 2000, 2003; LELO & KAŠIĆ-LELO, 2006a, 2006b, 2007; LELO & ŠKRIJELJ, 2001; KAŠIĆ-LELO, 2005, 2011; KAŠIĆ-LELO & LELO, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009a, 2009b; KAŠIĆ-LELO et al., 2006), but it has been so little that it can be said that no 56 M. -
