An angel set over the beasts is mentioned in Hermas' "Visions," iv. 2; his name is Thegri (see Hekalot, vi.) (Turiel = "bull-god," Jerome on Hab. i. 14). It is also one of the oldest Ashkenazi Jewish surnames. Germans with the last name Katz may originate in the Rhine River region of Germany, where the Katz Castle is located. (The name of the castle does not derive from Katze, cat, but from Katzenelnbogen, going back to Latin Cattimelibocus, consisting of the ancient Germanic tribal name of the Chatti and Melibokus.) Katzman, deriving from the German Katz, is a Slavic name meaning high priest or king. It is believed the Katzman surname originates from Germany and has roots from there as well. As a Jewish surname, Katz is an abbreviation formed from the Hebrew initials of the term Kohen Tzedeq (Hebrew: meaning "priest of justice"/"authentic priest" or Kohen Tzadok meaning the name-bearer is of patrilineal ,(כּ״ץ descent of the Kohanim sons of Zadok. -

Modern Zagreb grew out of two medieval settlements, Kaptol, founded in 1094 and Gradec, proclaimed a free royal city in 1242. Outsiders collectively referred to the settlements as Zagreb (meaning 'behind the hill'), although they were not officially united as the City of Zagreb until 1850. Boom time followed with the late 19th century characterized by the arrival of the railways and the construction of Donji Grad (Lower Town). -

Pasquariello Vol. XXIII, No. 1 Editor: Maxwell Reed Mowry, Jr. Dear Colleagues: In this first issue of the 23rd year of the University of Illinois Modern Foreign Language Newsletter, it is my privilege to send greetings to readers and colleagues throughout the state and to wish you all a successful year. A special welcome this year goes to Prof. Anthony M. Pasquariello, who on Sept. 1 assumed the headship of the Dept. of Spanish, Italian, & Portuguese at the U.I. He will also serve as Director of the Newsletter. He succeeds Prof. William H. Shoemaker in both capacities. At this point it would seem appropriate to salute Prof o Shoemaker for his long service both as department head and as Director of the Newsletter. All of his colleagues and friends will join me, I am sure, in thanking him and wishing him well. Two professors return to the Urbana campus after a year's sojourn in Europe. They are Prof. Francois Jost, who returns to direct again the Graduate Program in Comparative Literature, and Prof. Bruce Mainous, returning to his post as Head of the Dept. of French. Prof. Mainous spent the past year in Rouen, France, as Director of the Illinois-Iowa Year-Abroad Program; Prof. Jost spent a sabbatical year in Switzerland under the auspices of the Center for Advanced Study and also lectured at the Univ. -
Marcus Marulus Spalatensis*
MARCUS MARULUS SPALATENSIS* N e v e n J o v a n o v i ć UDK: 821.163.42.09 Marulić, M. Let me start with words from a letter written five hundred and ten years ago, on 19 July 1501, and discovered only recently (recently at least from a scholarly perspective), in 1991. The letter was sent from Split to Venice. The sender was Marko Marulić, fifty-one years old at the time. The addressee was his friend and compatriot Jerolim Cipiko. Iterum valete. I have written a small piece in our mother tongue, in rhyme; it is divided into six books and tells the story of Judith and Holofernes. It was finished last Lent and dedicated to our honorable Dean. It is composed as a poem should be. Come, see it, and you will say that the Slavic language too has its Dante. Such presumption is due to the self-confidence that I have when I’m around you. Goodbye once again. This document is fascinating on several levels. First, the work that Marulić is writing about is obviously his most famous epic, Judita (Judith) – and we get a chance to peer over the author’s shoulder during a time that will turn out to be key to his modern-day fame. -

S time 1 Prema podacima kojima raspolažem doktorske disertacije o Maruliću izradili su i obranili: Mladen Škarica, Marulić’s Sprache gegenüber dem heutigen Dialekte von Spalato und Umgebung, Univeristas litterarum Vindobonensis, Vindobonae 1909.
