There are few scholars in the world today who are as deserving of such a tribute as is Professor Marcovich. This is neither the time nor the place for a detailed disquisition intended to substantiate so sweeping an assertion, an assertion, in any event, the validity of which needs no substantiation in this place and at this time. For the readers of this journal, no less than the distinguished contributors to this and the following volume, are well aware of the enormous contribution to scholarship that Professor Marcovich has made. The extent of that contribution is apparent from the pages that follow. In the first place, the very journal in which these pages appear owes its existence to the vision and the tireless energy of Professor Marcovich, who, having founded Illinois Classical Studies nearly twenty years ago, has been its editor for all but five years of its distinguished existence and has made it one of the foremost classics journals in the world. In the second place, there is published below (1-17) a bibliography of Professor Marcovich's works, which supplies in abundance the evidence for this scholar's astonishing range and versatility. (It should be pointed out that compiling a list of Professor Marcovich's publications is rather like taking a census on a chinchilla farm, so rapidly do they multiply, and this list should be regarded as comprehensive only for the time of its compilation, November 1993.) Few scholars indeed have had so decisive an impact in such a variety of fields, from the study of archaic Greek poetry to Byzantine epigraphy, from the interpretation of Greek philosophy to the elucidation of the Church Fathers, from palaeography and textual criticism to the investigation of religious practices in the Graeco-Roman world. Finally, the contents of this volume bear ample witness to the influence, both personal and scholarly, that Professor Marcovich has exerted, and continues to exert. Three generations of scholars, who come from four continents and whose contributions represent many (but not all) of the fields in which Professor Marcovich has demonstrated his expertise, gratefully and affectionately pay honor to a scholar and educator who has himself taught on four continents and whose publications have enlightened and inspired all who are concerned with the classics in the broadest sense of that word. The tribute that this and the following volume represent is only one and not the last—of the many honors that Professor Marcovich will have received in the course of his remarkable career. And it will be appropriate to mention at least some of those honors here, as they too attest the world- wide recognition that Professor Marcovich's teaching and scholarship have so deservedly received. In Venezuela, Professor Marcovich was twice awarded the Premio Sesquiccnienario Gold Medal (1962 and 1964). In Greece, he was the recipient of the Silver Cross at Mount Athos (1963). More recently, in Israel, he was named Sackler Scholar at Tel Aviv University (1991). Finally, the awards that Professor Marcovich has received here in North America are too numerous to recount, but they include fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation and from the National Endowment for the Humanities and appointments as Associate Member of the Center for Advanced Study and as Senior Scholar at the University of Illinois. THIS book, which is intended principally for the large and increasing class of readers who wish to learn something of the masterpieces of Greek literature, and who cannot easily read them in Greek, was originally published by Messrs. Macmillan in a different form. Since its first appearance it has been revised and corrected throughout, and largely re- written. The chief part of the Introduction is new. It is not intended to be a general essay on Socrates, but only an attempt to explain and illustrate such points in his life and teaching as are referred to in these dialogues, which, taken by themselves, con- tain Plato's description of his great master's life, and work, and death. The books which were most useful to me in writing it are Professor Zeller's Socrates and the Socratic Schools, and the edition of the VI PREFACE. Apology by the late Rev. James Riddell, published after his death by the delegates of the Clarendon Press. His account of Socrates is singularly striking.

Ancient sources relating to the trial and the principles involved, and modern renditions, especially those of John Burnet and A. E. Version 1.0 July 2006 Josiah Ober Princeton University Abstract: Socrates was both a loyal citizen (by his own lights) and a critic of the democratic community’s way of doing things. This led to a crisis in 339 B.C. In order to understand Socrates’ and the Athenian community’s actions (as reported by Plato and Xenophon) it is necessary to understand the historical and legal contexts, the democratic state’s commitment to the notion that citizens are resonsible for the effects of their actions, and Socrates’ reasons for preferring to live in Athens rather than in states that might (by his lights) have had substantively better legal systems. He was found guilty by a narrow majority of the empanelled judges and executed in the public prison a few days later. The trial and execution constitute the best documented events in Socrates’ life and a defining moment in the relationship between Greek philosophy and Athenian democracy. It is to be hoped, however, now that attention is again called to the subject, that the clue may be found that shall unlock their meaning, and that Northern 8yI"ia will be no longer overlooked by tho explorer. DISCOVERY AT THE l\IOSQUE EL AKS.A, JERUSALEM.-llo A DISCOVERY of considerable interest has been made in this :Mosque by the Rev. J. Neil, who has only recently gone to Jerusalem for the Society for the Conversion of the Jews. "In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva­ tion.
