Thank you for your love, patience and understanding—I could not have asked for better parents. vi Abstract Research on the Ottomans during the Renaissance and early modern periods has primarily fallen into a dichotomy of fear and fascination—that is, either in scholarship that centers on the prejudice with which the Spanish viewed the East Mediterranean Orient, or, less often, criticism that uncovers surprising moments of tolerance and appreciation. While such an approach has been valuable, it proves limiting in considering how places such as Constantinople also provided a screen on which to discuss issues that preoccupied Spanish society such as race, gender and collective identity. I suggest an alternative framework that better encompasses the flexibility and diversity with which Spanish authors imagined the opposite end of the Mediterranean: Foucault’s heterotopia. Heterotopias are places where multiple utopian visions for a space overlap, often juxtaposing different times and places into a single, imagined site, chivalric novels, novelas, and treatises. I frame my project as a heterotopia in two ways: Constantinople as heterotopia, a city that evokes other historical cities; and Constantinople made of heterotopias, how places like the Harem and Turkish bagnios

After his accession, he abandoned the expansionist policy of his predecessor Trajan and focused on securing the frontiers of the empire and on maintaining its stability. Of the utmost importance was the further integration and participation in his program of the peoples of the Greek East, especially of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. Hadrian now invited them to become active members of the empire. By his lengthy travels and benefactions to the people of the region and by the creation of the Panhellenion, Hadrian attempted to create a second center of the Empire. Rome, in the West, was the first center; now a second one, in the East, would draw together the Greek people on both sides of the Aegean Sea. Thus he could accelerate the unification of the empire by focusing on its two most important elements, Romans and Greeks. Hadrian channeled his intentions in a number of ways, including the use of specific iconographical types on the coinage of his reign and religious language and themes in his interactions with the Greeks. In both cases it becomes evident that the Greeks not only understood his messages, but they also reacted in a positive way.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, In the last Catechesis before the holidays - two months ago, at the beginning of July - I began a new series of topics on the occasion of the Pauline Year, examining the world in which St Paul lived. Today I would like to resume and continue the reflection on the Apostle to the Gentiles, presenting a brief biography of him. Since we shall be dedicating next Wednesday to the extraordinary event that occurred on the road to Damascus, Paul's conversion, a fundamental turning point in his life subsequent to his encounter with Christ, let us briefly pause today on his life as a whole. We find Paul's biographical details respectively in the Letter to Philemon, in which he says he is "an old man" (Phlm 9: presbytes) and in the Acts of the Apostles in which, at the time of the stoning of Stephen, he is described as "a young man" (7: 58: neanías). Both these expressions are obviously generic but, according to ancient calculations, a man of about 30 was described as "young" whereas he would be called "old" by the time he had reached the age of about 60. The date of Paul's birth depends largely on the dating of the Letter to Philemon. He is traditionally supposed to have written it during his imprisonment in Rome in the mid-60s. Paul would have been born in approximately the year 8.

It is to be hoped, however, now that attention is again called to the subject, that the clue may be found that shall unlock their meaning, and that Northern 8yI"ia will be no longer overlooked by tho explorer. DISCOVERY AT THE l\IOSQUE EL AKS.A, JERUSALEM.-llo A DISCOVERY of considerable interest has been made in this :Mosque by the Rev. J. Neil, who has only recently gone to Jerusalem for the Society for the Conversion of the Jews. "In the Mosque of El Aksa," he writes, "you will remember that there is a long plain room opening out at the south-east angle, called the Mosque of Omar, in which the only object of interest whatever is a recess supported by two twisted pillars, and called the Mihrab, or Praying-place of Omar. You may, perhaps, remember that the pillars on each side of this recess, of Solomonic twisted pattern and polished marble, appear to have been turned upside down, and to have their capitals of greyish stone in broken leaf-like patterns below. On vi~iting this the day before yesterday, July 5th, I discovered that a great part of the yellowish plaster had been removed from the top of these pillars, and that rich grotesquely carved capitals were exposed to view in an admirable state of preserva­ tion.

De les fonts a la tradició, edited by Anna Maria Babbi and Vicent Josep Escartí, Amsterdam, John Benjamins, 2015, 173 pp. Silvia Millán (Universitat de València) The articles in this volume, edited by Anna Maria Babbi and Vicent Josep Escartí (Uni- versità degli Studi di Verona and Universitat de València – Institut Interuniversitari de Filologia Valenciana, respectively), highlight the fact that the chivalric novel Tirant lo Blanc –written in Valencia by Joanot Martorell in the 15th century and translated into Italian in the 16th century– keeps being relevant in both the Italian and the Iberian Peninsulas, so closely related in past and present. The knight Joanot Martorell wrote a classic of universal literature despite the fact that he belonged to a minority culture. Nowadays, after having been translated into numerous langua- ges, it is studied in many European and American universities and provokes great interest among researchers, as proven by the contributions included in this book. Cecilia Cantalupi, in “A Petrarchan source of Tirant lo Blanc. The letterFamiliare XII 2 and its Catalan tradition” (pp. 1–16), explains how chapter cxliii of the Catalan novel relates to Ab- dallah Salomon’s didactic speech to the protagonist, Tirant. It is a faithful adaptation of the Latin letter Fam. xii 2 written by Petrarch in 1352 and sent by him from Avignon to Niccolò Acciaiuoli. The letter was first translated into Catalan at the beginning of the 15th century.
