THIS book, which is intended principally for the large and increasing class of readers who wish to learn something of the masterpieces of Greek literature, and who cannot easily read them in Greek, was originally published by Messrs. Macmillan in a different form. Since its first appearance it has been revised and corrected throughout, and largely re- written. The chief part of the Introduction is new. It is not intended to be a general essay on Socrates, but only an attempt to explain and illustrate such points in his life and teaching as are referred to in these dialogues, which, taken by themselves, con- tain Plato's description of his great master's life, and work, and death. The books which were most useful to me in writing it are Professor Zeller's Socrates and the Socratic Schools, and the edition of the VI PREFACE. Apology by the late Rev. James Riddell, published after his death by the delegates of the Clarendon Press. His account of Socrates is singularly striking. -

European Research Studies, Volume X, Issue (1-2) 2007 Democracy and institutional change By Nicholas Kyriazis1 Abstract: The present essay analyses decision making procedures concerning economic issues such as the choice of public goods in the prototype democracy, Ancient Athens of the fourth century BC (the “Age of Demosthenes”). It analyses the link between political democracy, “economic” democracy, the emergence of new institutions and the finance of public goods like defence, education and “social security”. The prototype political democracy was advanced in questions of public administration, finance and institutions, on which political democracy was based. The paper concludes with some proposals as to what we could “learn” from the workings of “economic democracy” that is relevant for today’s democracies. Introduction There is a vast literature on the history, politics, warfare the arts etc. of the ancient Athenian democracy, which is considered the prototype and the origin of Western democracies.1 Much less attention has been paid till recently on the economics of the Athenian state, which is actually astonishing, since the Athenian state could not have developed its advanced political institutions without a sound economic basis, and advanced institutions and organisations, as I will purport to analyse later on in the present essay. BESLEY University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Introduction Since the days of the Ancient Greeks citizens, city fathers and philosophers have acknowledged the category ‘youth’ as a distinctive life stage and have vitally concerned themselves with the moral constitution of youth. They have argued over their wellbeing and their education and how best to mould as responsible citizens. Youth has been considered a ‘dangerous age’ and transition to adult and citizen; education has been identified with a range of different ways of enhancing or inflaming youth the passions of youth. Depending on ideology and philosophical viewpoint, education has been conceived as a means to incite or prevent revolution, violence and terrorism. Education may in fact be considered a form of indoctrination or political socialization especially when particular regimes set out to politicize notions of culture, religion and national identity. Moreover, teachers can be considered to have considerable impact on student attitudes and actions as the famous case of corruption against Socrates in Ancient Greece. Today both the US and Islamic countries hold teachers to account for providing appropriate moral training. And governments around the world routinely impose performance-related pay regimes based on the assumption of a relationship between teaching and learning. Regardless, teaching is a social activity and depending on many factors including the degree of relationship between teacher and student, the teacher’s charisma, intelligence, knowledge and powers of persuasion, and other influences on a young person (e.g. family, politics, religion) teaching can have either a profound or a limited effect. -

On the Teaching of Virtue in Plato’s Meno and the Nature of Philosophical Authority Abraham D. Stone May 2, 2010 Abstract Socrates and Meno reach two different conclusions: in the first part of the dialogue, that virtue is knowledge and can therefore be taught; in the second, that it is reliable true opinion and can therefore be acquired only by divine inspiration. Taking into account Socrates’ role as a teacher (of his interlocutors and of Plato) and Plato’s role as a teacher (of us), I show that neither of these conclusions is consistent with the existence of philosophy as a human institution, and argue that, for this reason, Plato refuses ultimately to endorse either of them. Meno’s question — “Can you tell me, Socrates, whether virtue is something teachable?” (70a1–2)1 — is important for the obvious reason that it concerns what we must do: if there is some way of acquiring virtue, then we are obliged to acquire it. But it has further implications, as well, both for political philosophy and for philosophical politics: that is, the political structure of philosophy itself. It is therefore worth understanding how Plato answers it, or fails to, in the course of the dialogue. Much discussion of the Meno has focused on epistemological issues, and on the passages in which Socrates explains his theory of learning as recollection. Edwin Carawan THE TRIAL OF THE ARGINOUSAI GENERALS AND THE DAWN OF «JUDICIAL REVIEW» After the victory at Arginousai in 406 BC the Athenian generals were accused of «betrayal» and condemned without trial, by a decree that the Athenians later repudiated as «unlawful» 1. What precisely made the proceedings paranomon is hard to define: What is the nomos that was violated? There was no constitutional document prescribing what we would call «due process», no general statute that expressly guaranteed to each citizen the right to trial by a properly constituted jury. And, as Xenophon describes it, the process was not altogether arbitrary. The assembly debated the matter at length and the defen- dants made a brief statement, presented witnesses, and nearly per- suaded the people to leave them free on bond. But as it was nearly dark and impossible to count hands in a close vote, it was decided that the council should draft a measure defining «the manner in which the men should be judged». Nemeth (1984) gives a useful summary of prosopography; five of those condemned were associated with Alkibiades, a group on the ascendant, while Theramenes in eclipse had every reason to discredit them. -

Citations in Classics and Ancient History
Citations in Classics and Ancient History The most common style in use in the field of Classical Studies is the author-date style, also known as Chicago 2, but MLA is also quite common and perfectly acceptable. Quick guides for each of MLA and Chicago 2 are readily available as PDF downloads. The Chicago Manual of Style Online offers a guide on their web-page: http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html The Modern Language Association (MLA) does not, but many educational institutions post an MLA guide for free access. While a specific citation style should be followed carefully, none take into account the specific practices of Classical Studies. They are all (Chicago, MLA and others) perfectly suitable for citing most resources, but should not be followed for citing ancient Greek and Latin primary source material, including primary sources in translation. Citing Primary Sources: Every ancient text has its own unique system for locating content by numbers. For example, Homer's Iliad is divided into 24 Books (what we might now call chapters) and the lines of each Book are numbered from line 1. Herodotus' Histories is divided into nine Books and each of these Books is divided into Chapters and each chapter into line numbers. The purpose of such a system is that the Iliad, or any primary source, can be cited in any language and from any publication and always refer to the same passage. That is why we do not cite Herodotus page 66. Page 66 in what publication, in what edition? Very early in your textbook, Apodexis Historia, a passage from Herodotus is reproduced. -

ABSTRACT Rejecting the Definitive: A Contextual Examination of Three Historical Stages of Atheism and the Legality of an American Freedom from Religion Ethan Gjerset Quillen, B.A., M.A., M.A. Mentor: T. Michael Parrish, Ph.D. The trouble with “definitions” is they leave no room for evolution. When a word is concretely defined, it is done so in a particular time and place. Contextual interpretations permit a better understanding of certain heavy words; Atheism as a prime example. In the post-modern world Atheism has become more accepted and popular, especially as a reaction to global terrorism. However, the current definition of Atheism is terribly inaccurate. It cannot be stated properly that pagan Atheism is the same as New Atheism. By interpreting the Atheisms from four stages in the term‟s history a clearer picture of its meaning will come out, hopefully alleviating the stereotypical biases weighed upon it. In the interpretation of the Atheisms from Pagan Antiquity, the Enlightenment, the New Atheist Movement, and the American Judicial and Civil Religious system, a defense of the theory of elastic contextual interpretations, rather than concrete definitions, shall be made.
