Let me start with words from a letter written five hundred and ten years ago, on 19 July 1501, and discovered only recently (recently at least from a scholarly perspective), in 1991. The letter was sent from Split to Venice. The sender was Marko Marulić, fifty-one years old at the time. The addressee was his friend and compatriot Jerolim Cipiko. In the postscript, Marulić wrote: Fatto ho una opereta in lengua nostra materna, per rima, distinta in sie libri, nela qual se contien la historia de Judit et Olopherne, fecila questa quadragesima passata et la dedicai a misser lo Primicerio nostro. Conposta è more poetico, venite et vedetila, direte che ancora la lengua schiaua ha el suo Dante. Troppo presumere me fa baldanza che ho con vui. Iterum valete. I have written a small piece in our mother tongue, in rhyme; it is divided into six books and tells the story of Judith and Holofernes. It was finished last Lent and dedicated to our honorable Dean. It is composed as a poem should be. Come, see it, and you will say that the Slavic language too has its Dante. Such presumption is due to the self-confidence that I have when I’m around you. Goodbye once again. This document is fascinating on several levels. First, the work that Marulić is writing about is obviously his most famous epic, Judita (Judith) – and we get a chance to peer over the author’s shoulder during a time that will turn out to be key to his modern-day fame.

    Otherness No. 2 - Year 11 06/2021 - LC.7 Kristina Grgić, University of Zagreb, Croatia Croatian Translations of Paradise Lost Abstract The article presents an overview and analysis of the five existing Croatian translations of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, including two integral translations (Ivan Krizmanić, 1827; Mate Maras, 2013) and three partial ones (Pasko Antun Kazali, mid-19th century; Hugo Badalić, 1896-97; Antun Šoljan 1962, 1980). In addition to providing five diverse Croatian interpretations of Paradise Lost, an English and international classic, these five renderings reflect various tendencies and developments within Croatian literary culture and particularly those that affected its translation practices in different periods. Keywords: John Milton, Paradise Lost, Croatian translations, Hugo Badalić, Pasko Antun Kazali, Ivan Krizmanić, Mate Maras, Antun Šoljan In Croatian culture, John Milton is esteemed as an undisputed English, European, and world literary classic, even though he is not counted among the most popular and influential anglophone (canonical) authors, which include – first and foremost – William Shakespeare, followed by the classics such as G. G. Byron, E. A. Poe, T. S. Eliot, and others.[1] Accordingly, although his reception has been less intense and systematic in comparison with a number of other European cultures (see Duran et al.), it has progressed relatively steadily since its outset in the first half of the 19th century, which coincided both with the Romantic reappraisal of Milton and the proper beginning of the Croatian reception of English-language literatures (Filipović 9–10).[2] The last decades of the 19th century saw the beginning of literary-critical interest in Milton, which has remained relatively modest so far, but has nonetheless played an important role in introducing Milton and his work to the Croatian audience.

Zamisao o Marulićevim danima kao kulturnoj i znanstvenoj priredbi posve- ćenoj baštini oca hrvatske književnosti nastala je 1990. u suradnji Književnoga kruga Split i tadašnjega Radničkog sveučilišta »Đuro Salaj«; pridružili su im se Društvo prijatelja kulturne baštine, Zavod za znanstveni i umjetnički rad HAZU u Splitu, Društvo hrvatskih književnika te Hrvatsko narodno kazalište u Splitu (već od prvih Marulićevih dana, 1991, redovito se održava i istoimeni festival hrvatske drame).     Croatian into Latin in 1510: Marko Marulić and the Cultural Translation of Regum Delmatiae atque Croatiae gesta Neven Jovanović 389 University of Zagreb Source Text and Its Context Croatia, across the Adriatic from Italy, was in contact with, and influenced by, the cultures of several neighbouring regions. Here the ancient provinces of Dalmatia and Pannonia met, and the Eastern Roman Empire was divided from the Western, just as the Eastern Orthodox Church was from the Roman Catholic; and here the Romans (living in Latin cities on the coast) mingled with the Slavs. Catholicism was embraced by rulers of an independent Croatian kingdom, which existed from the 10th until the 12th century. Later the kingdom was forced into a union with Hungary, eventually to be divided among Venice, the Habsburgs, and the Ottoman Empire (only the city state of Dubrovnik, or Ragusa, achieved and retained relative autonomy).1 During the Middle Ages, the region had a literature written in three languages: Latin, Old Church Slavonic (a ‘common Slavic’ liturgical language created from early Byzantine models, using its own Glagolitic script), and, finally, the Croatian vernacular. Texts in Old Church Slavonic and the vernacular were for the most part translations from Latin, Greek, and sometimes Italian, with religious prose (hagi- ography, exempla, vision literature) predominating. Historical prose narrative is comparatively scant, with a total of only five texts surviving. One of these stands apart from the rest: the anonymous Gesta regum Sclavorum (GRS), known

It consists of three different settings, with respect to physical and human geography, in which the resistant highlander, and the parsimonious islander live, meeting with the fickle city dweller in the unique retort of civilisation that is comprised by the cities of the coast. The antique urban pattern even today defines the form of the his- torical centres of the cities in Dalmatia (with Split, Trogir and Zadar 4 being the classic cases). After the incursions of the Avars and Slavs at the beginning of the 7th century the area of Roman Dalmatia was re- duced to the most immediate territories of the towns: Jader (Zadar), Tragurium (Trogir) and Split – the former Palace of Diocletian (to which some of the municipal attributes of nearby but ravaged Salona were transferred) – to Ragusium (Dubrovnik) and Dekatera (Kotor) in the south, and the islands of Arba (Rab), Apsorus (Osor) and Curicum (Krk) in the Bay of Kvarner.
