Work is about to commence on a multi-million-dollar, three level classroom centre at Maraetai Beach School. Principal Mark Keenan says it is the largest building programme undertaken at the school. “It will provide our children with a state-of-the-art learning environment and they deserve that,” says Mark. “It’s very exciting for everyone and we are getting a lot of positive feedback from our school community.” He says the project will also future proof the school allowing the roll, that now stands at 430, to expand to between 600 and 650 pupils. Discussions with the Ministry of Educa- tion began three years ago with the aim of adding four new classrooms to the school. Over the past seven years, six relocat- able classrooms have been installed on the school grounds to cater for growing student numbers. “At times we have held classes in the library and in the hall because we have been so full,” says Mark. “The ministry identified the growth Maraetai Beach School principal Mark Keenan stands at the site of the new multi-level classroom building. needs in our area and what started out as a plan for a four-classroom block has end- Mark describes the new three split level to provide spaces where they could work The new building is expected to be ed up as a multi-level, multi-purpose 11 building as flexible and purposeful with together, collaborate and problem solve,” finished in 11 months, with the official classroom block complete with a science the new classrooms able to accommodate he explains. “We wanted to provide ded- opening planned for early next year and lab and kitchen, robotics centre, art studio, 275 students. icated areas where the children can be pupils moving into their new classrooms awhina (communal supportive learning) “We wanted the children to have a really taught science, robotics and art.
