This time around, a number of newcomers have thrown their hats into the ring. The PC Times asked all candidates representing our area to share their thoughts about what they hope to offer our community if elected. The Pohutukawa Coast Community Association is offering people a chance to talk to local board candidates at the ‘meet the candidates’ evening on Wednesday 18 September at Beachlands Baptist Church.

All three of our current representatives on the Franklin Local Board are standing for re-election. Angela Fulljames, Malcolm Bell and Amanda Hopkins explain why they are keen to continue their roles below. On the opposite page we profile the four new candidates who are standing for election.

Before the board, I had financial roles and did voluntary work too, but the board is my primary focus now. Malcolm Bell Team Franklin / current Franklin Local Board member

My key achievements: I’ve lost count of the meetings I’ve been to in the subdivision, but I’ve enjoyed them because delivering solutions is what it’s all about. Bureaucracy can be challenging, so helping people negotiate it is always a highlight. I got into local politics to help people and being there for the victims of the January 2018 storm and the consequent erosion reminded me why I got involved. It’s the wins along the way too, like fulfilling a promise to get rid of the power pylon interfering with the view of Sunkist Bay, and persuading Vector to install LED lighting from Wakelin Road to the beach. There’s a report due that I’m hoping will confirm a 50kmh speed limit through Hunua village, and I was pleased to help speed up the approval process for the Sunkist Bay Road link to Pine Harbour. Getting the Kawakawa Bay hall back to the community after doing that for Orere, Maraetai and Beachlands was great, as was maintaining grants to halls at Ararimu, Hunua and Paparimu. The Hunua Trail is off the ground and being part of the Pohutukawa Coast Trails Group, establishing a route from Pine Harbour almost to Whitford-Maraetai Road is an achievement. Why I am keen to stand again: The job isn’t finished, we have an ambitious work programme for the next three years. I want to continue to be available to resi- dents to help with everyday concerns. The important issues I’d like to address: Let’s keep working with Ngai Tai, make progress on a secondary school, keep enabling communities, help clean up the Wairoa River, ensure local funding for halls and groups, get on with kerbing in Beachlands, and turn our attention to improving our sporting facilities. Why should people vote for me? To build on the successes of the last six years and know Team Franklin members will keep working for you. POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (6 September 2019) 5 LOCAL BOARD ELECTION SPECIAL - MEET THE CANDIDATES Lance Gedge Independent I am a 46 year old with a trades background. I own and operate two local businesses - one being that of fire place servicing and the other water tank servicing and repairs. I also have 6 years of previous council board experience as an elected member. I have lived in the Wairoa subdivision for 38 years and I currently reside in Beachlands. I am standing because I am passionate about my district. We have so much on offer here and so many incredible people. We are extremely fortunate. We do, however, have plenty of issues that can best be tackled from a local board position. I know this well from past experience. My daily business life takes me into homes all over the Wairoa. I spend a lot of time talking to locals about council issues and I can’t help but feel we are being short-changed by the super city. There is great concern regarding important infrastructural needs - things like footpaths and drains, or the shocking state of our roads, or inadequate services in general. A big issue that needs council ownership now is our non-existent high school. And what about our over-crowded primary schools? The Wairoa is growing very fast - council approves this growth so council has a responsibility to provide adequate infrastructure and must show leadership on the other needs that such growth brings. I stand for a Board that says enough is enough. I want our Board to be pro-active. We need to be asking some serious questions of the governing body. Local Boards represent the voice of their community, so let’s make that voice loud! I stand as an Independent Candidate in order to represent you and no other group. I believe in honesty and integrity in all things, and I’m here for the long haul. So I want only the best we can get for this ever changing region. Note: In our 23 August issue the PC Times listed Lance as standing on behalf of Communities and Residents. This information was supplied as part of ’s draft list of candidates, but was incorrect - Lance is standing as an Independent. George Ngatai Better Franklin Tena koutou katoa. I’m George Ngatai, and I have lived in Ness Valley for over two years with my family. I’ve been married for 20 years and have five children aged 10-16 years. In 2017 I received the Queens Service Medal for my service to Health, Maori and Community. I am owner and director of The Whanau Ora Community Clinic which is a wrap-around service of eight general practice clinics across Auckland and has doctors and nurses stretching from Northland down to Christchurch. I have been involved in Restorative Justice for 5 years with the Auckland District Court and Orakei Marae and was recently appointed as chair of the Community/Iwi Panel in partnership with the New Zealand Police. I can offer the Wairoa district extensive governance experience through being a director for Counties Manukau District Health Board. I am chair of the Maori Health Advisory Committee and a member of Community Public Health Advisory Committee, the Hospital Advisory Committee, and the Audit Risk and Finance Committee. I am also a director for Transitioning Out Aotearoa, and for BDO Marketing and Business Solutions. I have expertise in the area of organisational management and fiscal accountabilities. I support Arthritis New Zealand, Conservation Volunteers NZ, ManUp NZ and White Ribbon as a White Ribbon Ambassador. I want to be elected onto the Franklin Local Board for the Wairoa subdivision because I love the area. I want to continue to ensure that the community is safe for families and has the required services to support those who live in it. I am also standing for Counties Manukau District Health Board, where I have served as a board member for the past 6 years. Please feel free to contact me on 0274 371 419. Ani Stace Independent I have lived on the Pohutukawa Coast for 7 years. Firstly in Maraetai and now in Beachlands where I opened my ethical gift and coffee shop, Rosa, almost 2 years ago. I have worked in business management most of my career but started as an English Teacher in Sar- dinia, Italy and worked my way up to be the Service Manager running large branches. I have 2 children, and after my first I started volunteering for a charity called Bellyful. Five years on I am the co-coordinator of Bellyful East Auckland and manage the 35 volunteers that work to provide an amazing service of frozen meals to young families lacking in support or suffering ongoing illness. I’m standing for the Franklin Local Board because, having already been involved in several community projects on the Pohutukawa Coast, I know I can contribute a lot more to building an even better, stronger community. I feel very strongly about giving all local people a voice, a chance to be heard and to be involved in what’s happening locally. The Franklin Local Board is the voice of the people and I would like to represent my fellow Wairoa residents in a positive way to develop plans, community projects and initiatives to benefit everyone. I’d like to reinforce and develop the connection and communication between the Board and the Community – sharing the ideas, plans and delivery of initiatives, all at a local level. My priorities stem from my day to day dealings with community members and what is important to them. My passion for the environment and helping others is my driving force. Clean water ways, making our land predator free, replanting native bush and waste mini- misation are key to maintaining our beautiful area. On a daily basis I encounter people who battle with mental health issues. I seek to support and encourage them by putting them in contact with people who can assist in their journey. Creating awareness and support is a massive endeavour, as is making sure we have suitable services available. Also, protecting our future by providing key support services to grow our older youth in a more positive community-based way. I will work hard towards the Pohutu- kawa Coast High School initiative and will be the link between community and council..

Jesse Cleave Independent Hi there, I’m Jesse and here is a little about me: I’m “Dad” to Emily (3), Jack (1), and husband to Shanalyn. I was born and raised in Auckland, play sport locally and run several businesses ranging from health centres to shared office space. I am running for local board to bring a fresh perspective, listen to the community and amplify our voice within Council. Our community deserves better roads to keep us safe, a local high school for our kids and activities for our teenagers to keep them engaged. There is also not enough support for our community groups dealing with mental health and it saddens me to hear of so many suicides of our fellow locals and also the follow-on effects to those left behind. Your ideas are important to me and I will be constantly checking in to make sure I am fighting for what is important to you. Vote for me so I can stand up, get stuff done and better represent you and our community! Feel free to get in touch by email: [email protected] or find out more at www.jessecleave.nz.
