Icleanu 2017 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION A CASE FOR EMPATHY: IMMIGRATION IN SPANISH CONTEMPORARTY MEDIA, MUSIC, FILM, AND NOVELS This dissertation analyzes the representations of immigrants from North Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe in Spain. As engaged scholarship, it seeks to better the portrayal of immigrants in the mass media through the study of literature, film, and music about immigration spanning from the year 2000 to 2016. Because misconceptions continue to propagate in the media, this dissertation works to counteract anti-immigrant, xenophobic representations as well as balance out overly positive and orientalized portrayal of immigrants with a call to recognize immigrants as human beings who deserve the same respect, dignity, and rights as any other citizen. Chapter 1 examines and analyzes the background to immigration in Spain by covering demographics, the mass media, and political theories related to immigration. Chapter 2 analyzes Spanish music about immigration through Richard Rorty’s social theory of ‘sentimental education’ as a meaningful way to redescribe marginalized minorities as full persons worthy of rights and dignity. Chapter 3 investigates the representation of immigrants in Spanish filmic shorts and cinema. Lastly, Chapter 4 demonstrates how literary portrayals of immigrants written by undocumented immigrants can give rise to strong characters that avoid victimization and rear empathy in their readers in order to affect a social change that minimizes cruelty. Joe Glazer, psicoanalista en Nueva York, se separa de su mujer embarazada. Alquila un pisito en el que esconde una cámara y empieza a filmar su enloquecida vida sexual para olvidar el dolor de la ruptura. FLAMENCO FLAMENCO 01. SYNOPSIS 02. DIRECTOR’S NOTES 03. CARLOS SAURA 04. VITTORIO STORARO 05. CAST & CREW 06. FILM DETAILS 07. THE PRODUCTION COMPANY 01. SYNOPSIS Considered the greatest exponent of the particular way of making musical films of Carlos Saura, Flamenco, flamenco arises, through a journey of light and life, the evolution of the songs, dances and music of this art that, in the director own words, would be heritage of the universe. With the experience and knowledge that Carlos Saura’s films have gained over time, we enter in the roads of the existing talents of this art so alive and dynamic that flamenco is it, to present his new film which uses innovative elements, in the technical field as in the narrative, becoming a unique production. The film shows that there is a powerful new flamenco, of young talents finding their way in our country and beyond our borders, but the reality of this art can not be reflected in the right way without some of the great living masters that we are fortunate to have in Spain. 02. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Carlos Saura It is always difficult to write about the ideas that lead me to create my musical films. It is difficult because the actual scripts I use are barely three or four pages long, where the different dances that have been chosen are in order, with the artist’s name and the space in which the dance might develop. It is even more difficult because part of the stimulus, the fun that always comes with the filming is based – let's face it – on the possibility of improvising in this type of cinema.

  • First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006
First-Run Smoking Presentations in U.S. Movies 1999-2006 Jonathan R. Polansky Stanton Glantz, PhD CENTER FOR TOBAccO CONTROL RESEARCH AND EDUCATION UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, SAN FRANCISCO SAN FRANCISCO, CA 94143 April 2007 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smoking among American adults fell by half between 1950 and 2002, yet smoking on U.S. movie screens reached historic heights in 2002, topping levels observed a half century earlier.1 Tobacco’s comeback in movies has serious public health implications, because smoking on screen stimulates adolescents to start smoking,2,3 accounting for an estimated 52% of adolescent smoking initiation. Equally important, researchers have observed a dose-response relationship between teens’ exposure to on-screen smoking and smoking initiation: the greater teens’ exposure to smoking in movies, the more likely they are to start smoking. Conversely, if their exposure to smoking in movies were reduced, proportionately fewer teens would likely start smoking. To track smoking trends at the movies, previous analyses have studied the U.S. motion picture industry’s top-grossing films with the heaviest advertising support, deepest audience penetration, and highest box office earnings.4,5 This report is unique in examining the U.S. movie industry’s total output, and also in identifying smoking movies, tobacco incidents, and tobacco impressions with the companies that produced and/or distributed the films — and with their parent corporations, which claim responsibility for tobacco content choices. Examining Hollywood’s product line-up, before and after the public voted at the box office, sheds light on individual studios’ content decisions and industry-wide production patterns amenable to policy reform.

  • Revisiting the Etymology of Zanni
REVISITING THE ETYMOLOGY OF ZANNI Anna Moro It has long been maintained that the etymology of zani, zanni – the servant or buffoon of the commedia dell’arte – is a northern Italian variant of the proper noun Giovanni, or its shortened form, Gianni. In Tommaseo and Bellini’s Dizionario della lingua italiana , published in Turin between 1865 and 1879, it is stated that the term is “voce bergamasca, accorciata dall’intero nome Giovanni, che rappresenta un Servo semplice e goffo bergamasco.” 1 Tommaseo and Bellini’s explanation of the origin of the term is basically what is found in modern etymological dictionaries, such as Battisti and Alessio’s Dizionario etimologico italiano (DEI) and Cortelazzo and Zolli’s Dizionario etimologico della lingua italiana (DELI). The earliest attestation of the term appears to be the 15th century, according to Battisti and Alessio, but a precise reference is not given. 16th century attestations of zani / zanni corresponding to the servant character of the commedia dell’arte , of course, abound. There is no doubt that the term zani was widely used in the 16th century in Italy to designate the servant character of the commedia dell’arte ; and it is during the 16th century that the term spread outside of Italy: it is found in French, for example, as zani from 1550, and in English, as zany , later in the century (Migliorini 1983: 426). In the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) , the noun zany (with various spellings), which preceded the use of term as 1 Cited in M. Cortelazzo and P. Zolli, Dizionario etimologico della lingua italiana (DELI), Bologna: Zanichelli, 1992 (1980): 1463.
